Warner Bros.'s highly anticipated Superman will look to keep the summer box office rolling upon arriving in theatres this weekend. Superman, which was directed by James Gunn and stars David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult, represents the first film in the new DC Universe (DCU) from Warner Bros. and DC Studios. As the first theatrical entry in the new version of the DC universe, there is obviously a lot riding on the performance of Superman at the box office. Superman is playing in 4,135 locations this weekend, will be playing on IMAX screens, has Thursday preview shows beginning early at 2PM and also had early access screenings for Amazon Prime members on Tuesday. On the average, critical reviews for Superman have been very good, but also are not quite out of this world at the same time. With that said, initial word of mouth from the film's early access showings points towards Superman going over even better with audiences than it has with critics. Superman is clearly one of this summer's more anticipated films, though at the same time, as a non-sequel and series reboot on top of that, the film could prove to have less built-in front-loading than usual for a high-profile comic book based film. A good opening weekend comparison for Superman may prove to be 2023's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. That film, which was also directed by Gunn, debuted with $118.41 million in May of 2023, before going on to gross $358.996 million domestically. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Superman will open with $123.0 million this weekend, with the film also having potential to hold up relatively well throughout the rest of the summer.

Even with this weekend's debut of Superman, it appears that Universal's Jurassic World Rebirth will continue to have a major presence at the box office this weekend. Last weekend Jurassic World Rebirth outpaced consensus expectations with a three-day opening weekend of $92.02 million and an impressive $147.82 million five-day launch (Jurassic World Rebirth opened on a Wednesday). Although Jurassic World Rebirth only received a B rating on CinemaScore, the film's daily holds thus far point towards the film going over better with audiences than a B CinemaScore rating would typically suggest for a high-profile event film. Jurassic World Rebirth will no doubt take a hit from the arrival of Superman this weekend, but at the same time, Jurassic World Rebirth will be helped out by coming off of an opening weekend that was deflated from the film's midweek opening and from Jurassic World Rebirth not having IMAX screens to lose this weekend (though Jurassic World Rebirth will be losing non-IMAX PLF screens to Superman this weekend). With all of that in mind, odds are strong that Jurassic World Rebirth will have a better second weekend percentage hold than that of 2022's Jurassic World Dominion, which declined 59.2 percent in its second weekend to gross $59.15 million. Jurassic World Rebirth could decline 53.8 percent this weekend to gross a healthy $42.5 million in its second frame.

Warner Bros. and Apple's F1 The Movie is set to finish in third place this weekend. The Joseph Kosinski directed racing drama starring Brad Pitt didn't hold up quite as well as expected last weekend, but the film's second weekend decline of 54.8 percent (to gross $25.78 million), was still quite respectable by this summer's standards. F1 The Movie has continued to stabilize during the midweek this week, but the film will be taking an obvious hit this weekend from losing its IMAX screens to fellow Warner Bros. release Superman (especially since F1 The Movie has been performing very well in IMAX). At this point in the film's run, there is likely still enough overall demand for F1 The Movie to withstand the loss of IMAX screens fairly well. Look for F1 The Movie to decline 46.9 percent from last weekend to gross $13.7 million this weekend.

A pair of family films are likely to round out this weekend's top five. Last weekend Universal and DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon declined 42.6 percent to take third with $11.25 million, while Disney and Pixar's Elio decreased a similar 44.5 percent to follow in fourth place with $5.79 million. Both films are likely to hold up at least a bit better this weekend, thanks in part to the Independence Day holiday having deflated last Friday's grosses for family films and in part to Superman likely having a bit less of a family audience than Jurassic World Rebirth has had. A decline of 38.7 percent would transfer into a fourth place take of $6.9 million for How to Train Your Dragon this weekend, while a decrease of just 30.9 percent would give Elio a fifth place haul of $4.0 million for the frame.
