Universal and DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon will attempt to hold off two new wide releases this weekend to remain in first place at the domestic box office. Last weekend, How to Train Your Dragon exceeded consensus expectations with a strong debut of $84.63 million. The live-action remake has also held up very nicely during the midweek this week and looks to be going over very well with audiences after receiving a strong A rating on CinemaScore. How to Train Your Dragon will also receive an additional boost this weekend from continuing to play on IMAX screens. How to Train Your Dragon will have to face new competition for family audiences from Disney and Pixar's Elio this weekend, but with Elio not expected to perform as well as a typical Pixar release at the box office, the added presence shouldn't take too much of a toll on How to Train Your Dragon this weekend. How to Train Your Dragon could decline a sizable 52.1 percent this weekend to take in $40.5 million, which would represent a good second weekend hold, especially by this summer's standards thus far for higher-profile films.

The weekend's top new release is highly likely to be Sony's 28 Years Later. The Danny Boyle directed horror sequel is written by Alex Garland and represents the third installment in the 28 Days Later horror film series. 28 Years Later stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O'Connell, Alfie Williams and Ralph Fiennes. The film is playing in 3,444 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows starting very early at 12PM. With the early start time on Thursday, the Juneteenth holiday and built-in front-loading as a highly anticipated horror sequel, Thursday's preview shows are likely to represent a larger than usual percentage of the film's opening weekend take this weekend. In the years that have passed since the release of 2002's 28 Days Later and 2007's 28 Weeks Later, the series' audience appears to have grown. 28 Years Later has also received exceptional critical reviews, which should help further build the audience for the film. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that 28 Years Later will debut in second place this weekend with a healthy $35.0 million.

Also opening in wide release this weekend is Disney and Pixar's Elio. The computer animated sci-fi adventure film was directed by the team of Madeline Sharafian, Domee Shi and Adrian Molina, and features a vocal cast that includes Yonas Kibreab, Zoe Saldaña, Remy Edgerly, Brad Garrett and Jameela Jamil. Elio is opening in 3,750 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning early at 2PM (the film also had early access shows on Wednesday). Elio was originally scheduled to open in March of last year, but was pushed back to its eventual 2025 release date. As mentioned, Elio doesn't look to be as anticipated as usual for a Pixar release, even by the standards of a non-sequel from Pixar. Some of that is likely a result of sci-fi animated family films often being a tough sell at the box office, in comparison to other types of animated family films. But there still looks to be some interest in Elio and there is also potential for the film to hold up well in the weeks ahead, especially since critical reviews for Elio have been very good. As for this weekend, Elio could debut in third place with a so-so $24.0 million.

Blockbuster holdovers Disney's Lilo & Stitch and Paramount's Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning will look to have a continued presence at the box office this weekend. Last weekend Lilo & Stitch declined 51.4 percent to place in second with $15.72 million, while Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning decreased by just 28.8 percent (thanks in part to the Father's Day holiday on Sunday) to land in fourth place with $10.55 million (and that was with the film also losing its IMAX screens). With the opening weekend of How to Train Your Dragon out of the way, Lilo & Stitch is likely to stabilize this weekend and could decline a very solid 33.2 percent to take fourth with $10.5 million. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning could have another very good hold this weekend by declining 31.8 percent to round out this weekend's top five with $7.2 million.
