Universal and DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon is set to soar to the top of the box office with ease this weekend. The Dean DeBlois directed remake of the 2010 animated film How to Train Your Dragon represents the first live-action film from DreamWorks Animation. The live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon stars Mason Thames, Nico Parker and Gerard Butler (and of course Toothless the dragon). How to Train Your Dragon is opening in a wide 4,356 locations this weekend, is playing on IMAX screens and has Thursday preview shows beginning early at 2PM. On the average, critical reviews for How to Train Your Dragon have been solid. The most recent How to Train Your Dragon animated film, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World opened with $55.02 million domestically back in February of 2019 and went on to gross $160.80 million domestically. There appears to be even more interest in the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon, due in part to there potentially being a larger non-family audience for the live-action remake. How to Train Your Dragon could also get a significant boost on Sunday from the film having potential for a strong performance on Father's Day Sunday. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that How to Train Your Dragon will debut with $78.0 million this weekend.

After leading the domestic box office for each of the past three frames, Disney's Lilo & Stitch is likely to place in a distant second this weekend. Last weekend, Lilo & Stitch declined 47.6 percent to take in $32.36 million. While Lilo & Stitch is set to surpass the $350 million domestic mark today (Thursday), the film has been more front-loaded than usual for a well-received family film. And with Lilo & Stitch sure to take a significant hit from fellow family film How to Train Your Dragon this weekend, it is unlikely that Lilo & Stitch will see any stabilization this weekend in comparison to last weekend's hold. Lilo & Stitch could decline a sizable 52.1 percent this weekend to take in $15.5 million.

Also opening in wide release this weekend is A24's Materialists. The Celine Song directed romantic comedy features an impressive cast that stars Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal. Materialists is opening in 2,844 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning early at 1PM. Critical reviews for Materialists have been quite strong. Between the film's cast, strong critical reviews, reasonably wide release and Materialists serving as a top alternative choice this weekend for those not interested in more typical summer blockbuster fare, the chances of Materialists getting off to a good start look strong. There is also the potential for the film to hold up well in the weeks ahead, especially if it goes over as well with audiences as it has with critics. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Materialists will debut with a promising $13.0 million third place take this weekend.

Lionsgate's Ballerina and Paramount's Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning should round out the rest of this weekend's top five. While the pair of action sequels will both experience significant showtime losses this weekend in comparison to last weekend (which also includes Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning losing its IMAX screens to How to Train Your Dragon), both films will likely experience strong Father's Day holds, to help offset some of the effect from the losses in showtimes. Look for Ballerina to decline a sharp 57.1 percent from last weekend's so-so $24.50 million debut to place in fourth with $10.5 million and for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning to decrease a very reasonable 39.3 percent from last weekend's $14.82 million gross to follow in fifth place with $9.0 million.
