Disney's Lilo & Stitch will look to lead the domestic box office for a third consecutive frame this weekend. Last weekend, Lilo & Stitch declined 57.7 percent to gross $61.81 million, which was a sizable, but reasonable second weekend decline for a high-profile Memorial Day weekend release. With the film's second weekend decline now behind it, Lilo & Stitch should stabilize this weekend. Third weekend holds for previous live-action re-imaginings from Disney at this time of year include a 42.4 percent decline for 2019's Aladdin (to gross $24.68 million) and a 44.1 percent decrease for 2023's The Little Mermaid (to gross $23.15 million). Lilo & Stitch may be able to hold slightly better than both of those films did, due in part to Lilo & Stitch potentially getting a bit of a bump this weekend from family audiences wanting to catch the film (or catch it again) before Universal and DreamWorks Animation's highly anticipated live-action re-imagining of How to Train Your Dragon enters the marketplace next weekend. Look for Lilo & Stitch to decline a solid 41.8 percent this weekend to take in $36.0 million.
This weekend's highest profile new wide release is Lionsgate's Ballerina (also known as From the World of John Wick: Ballerina). The John Wick spin-off film (set between John Wick: Chapter 3 & John Wick: Chapter 4) was directed by Len Wiseman and stars Ana de Armas. Ballerina also features Anjelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne, Ian McShane and Keanu Reeves. Ballerina is playing in 3,409 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 6PM (and also had early access shows on Wednesday). On the average, critical reviews for Ballerina have been solid. As strong as John Wick: Chapter 3 and John Wick: Chapter 4 both were at the box office, there doesn't look to be anywhere near as much interest in Ballerina, which is usually the case with spin-off films at the box office. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Ballerina will debut in second place this weekend with $29.0 million.
Holdovers will likely round out the rest of this weekend's top five. Last weekend Paramount's Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning declined 57.5 percent to hold steady in second place with $27.22 million. Like Lilo & Stitch, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning should experience significant stabilization this weekend, especially with the film holding onto its IMAX screens again this weekend. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning could decline 44.2 percent this weekend to place in third with $15.2 million.
After opening in third place (on the very low end of consensus expectations) last weekend with $20.30 million, Sony's Karate Kid: Legends should take fourth place this weekend. Although the film looks to be going over well with audiences after receiving a good A- rating on CinemaScore, initial daily percentage holds haven't been that encouraging and as a sequel, there is likely to be some built-in initial front-loading for Karate Kid: Legends. A sizable decline of 57.1 percent would transfer into a second weekend gross of $8.7 million for Karate Kid: Legends.
Warner Bros.'s Final Destination Bloodlines declined a respectable 43.7 percent last weekend to place in fourth with $10.90 million. The blockbuster horror sequel could hold up a bit better this weekend, by declining a solid 38.5 percent to take fifth place with $6.7 million.
This weekend will also see a significant expansion for Focus' The Phoenician Scheme. The latest film from director Wes Anderson features an ensemble cast, which is led by Benicio del Toro. Similar to Anderson's 2023 film, Asteroid City, critical reviews for The Phoenician Scheme have been good on the average, but not as strong as usual for a Wes Anderson directed film. Last weekend The Phoenician Scheme had a promising platform launch with $560,499 from 6 locations in New York and Los Angeles. The Phoenician Scheme expands to 1,678 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning early at 2PM. While The Phoenician Scheme likely won't be as mainstream friendly as Asteroid City was (that film grossed $9.05 million upon expanding to a very similar 1,675 locations), it should be in store for a solid expansion of its own this weekend. The Phoenician Scheme could gross $5.8 million this weekend, which would bring the film's early domestic total to $6.5 million.
