Warner Bros.'s Sinners will look to lead the way at the domestic box office for a second consecutive frame this weekend. Last weekend the critically acclaimed Ryan Coogler directed film starring Michael B. Jordan broke out with a first place debut of $48.01 million. Furthermore, Sinners has displayed terrific holding power thus far, with the film's midweek grosses this week being especially impressive for the non-summer season. In addition to benefiting from exceptional critical reviews, Sinners is also benefiting from going over exceptionally well with audiences (the film received a strong A rating on CinemaScore) and from performing very well on IMAX screens. Sinners will continue to play on IMAX screens this weekend and the demand to see Sinners on IMAX could be boosted this weekend by moviegoers who want to catch the film in IMAX before Sinners loses its IMAX showtimes to Disney's Thunderbolts* next weekend. The situation for Sinners as the film enters its second frame this weekend feels very similar to that of Get Out as that film entered its second weekend back in March of 2017. Get Out declined just 15.4 percent in its second weekend to gross $28.24 million (and that was with Logan entering the marketplace). Given the higher opening weekend starting point for Sinners and that Sinners is taking a bit of a showtimes hit this weekend, it will be difficult for Sinners to hold up quite as well as Get Out did in its second weekend. But, the second weekend percentage hold for Sinners may not be all that much behind the second weekend hold of Get Out either. Sinners could decline by just 21.9 percent this weekend for a terrific second weekend gross of $37.5 million.
Entering the marketplace this weekend is Amazon MGM Studios' The Accountant 2. The sequel to 2016's The Accountant sees the return of director Gavin O'Connor, and stars Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal. The Accountant 2 is opening in 3,610 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 4PM. The Accountant (which was released by Warner Bros.) opened with $24.71 million back in October of 2016 and went on to finish its domestic run with a very solid $86.26 million. More recently, The Accountant has performed well on both the Prime Video and Max streaming services, which could be a sign of there being a good amount of interest in the sequel. The Accountant 2 has gone over fairly well with critics, as reviews for the film have been stronger than those for The Accountant. The biggest hurdle for The Accountant 2 this weekend may prove to be the amount of overall competition in the marketplace, as in addition to the breakout hit Sinners, The Accountant 2 will also have to deal with competition from both the re-issue of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and current blockbuster smash A Minecraft Movie. Look for The Accountant 2 to open in the same neighborhood as its predecessor, with a start of $24.0 million this weekend.
While it had to settle for second place last weekend, Warner Bros. and Legendary's A Minecraft Movie is still coming off of an impressive third weekend gross of $40.50 million. With last weekend's performance in mind, A Minecraft Movie should have no problem continuing to have a significant presence at the box office this weekend. Thus far, A Minecraft Movie declined 51.8 percent in its first weekend and 48.4 percent in its second weekend. Given the trend, the film could continue to stabilize a bit more again this weekend. A Minecraft Movie could decrease by a respectable 45.7 percent this weekend to take in $22.0 million. That would likely place A Minecraft Movie in a close race for third place this weekend with Disney's re-issue of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.
As for Disney's 20th Anniversary re-issue of 2005's Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, the re-issue will be opening in 2,775 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning early at 2PM. There seems to be significantly more interest in this year's re-issue of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith than last year's re-issue of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, which started out with $8.72 million and finished up with $13.03 million domestically. In addition to being remembered more fondly than Star Wars: The Phantom Menace by most, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith will also have the opening weekend advantage of the mentioned Thursday preview shows (last year's re-issue of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace didn't have Thursday previews). Like last year's re-issue of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, this year's re-issue of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith should be especially front-loaded towards opening weekend. As for this weekend, BoxOfficeReport is predicting a weekend gross of $21.0 million for Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. That would move the unadjusted lifetime domestic total for Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith just past the $400 million domestic mark.
Sony's Until Dawn (in its first weekend) and Angel Studios' The King of Kings (in its third weekend) should both also have a presence at the box office this weekend. Until Dawn, an R-rated horror film directed by David F. Sandberg, is based on the 2015 video game of the same name. Until Dawn is opening in 3,055 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 4PM. Thanks in part to strong word of mouth and the Easter weekend frame, the faith-based animated film The King of Kings held up extremely well last weekend by declining only 9.3 percent to gross $17.57 million. However, with the Easter holiday in the past, The King of Kings is highly likely to experience significant slowing this weekend. Look for Until Dawn to start out in fifth place this weekend with $9.6 million and for The King of Kings to decline a sharp 57.9 percent to land in sixth with $7.4 million.
