After last weekend's break-out debut, Warner Bros. and Legendary's A Minecraft Movie is set remain in first place at the box office with ease this weekend. Last weekend A Minecraft Movie soared past all expectations with an incredible start of $162.75 million. The video game based film has proven to be critic-proof thus far and coming as no surprise, A Minecraft Movie looks to be going over far better with audiences than it has with critics given the film's good B+ rating on CinemaScore and current 88 percent Popcornmeter audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. A Minecraft Movie could also benefit this weekend from the media frenzy created by last weekend's break-out performance, as the portion of moviegoers who may not have been interested in the film at first, may be more willing to check out the film this weekend, in part to see what all the fuss is about. In addition, A Minecraft Movie will be helped out this weekend by holding onto a very high percentage of its average showtimes per location from last weekend and there is also the potential for high levels of repeat business among Minecraft fans. At the same time, as a video game based film, there should be some initial front-loading for A Minecraft Movie, and the film's midweek grosses this week haven't been out of this world either (relatively speaking). But that may have more to do with the sizable family and teenage audiences for A Minecraft Movie, especially given how well the film held up over opening weekend. A Minecraft Movie could decline a very respectable 49.0 percent this weekend for a second weekend haul of $83.0 million.
Another family film should take second place this weekend, as Angel Studios' The King of Kings appears to be in store for a break-out start of its own. The faith-based computer animated film about the life of Jesus, as told by Charles Dickens, was directed by Seong-Ho Jang and features an impressive ensemble vocal cast that includes Oscar Isaac, Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman, Mark Hamill, Pierce Brosnan, Roman Griffin Davis, Forest Whitaker and Ben Kingsley. Pre-sales for The King of Kings have been very strong and there is also a Pay it Forward campaign for the film, which will also help boost sales. The King of Kings will also benefit a bit from essentially having an extra full day on Thursday, as Thursday preview shows are beginning as early as 10AM at some locations. On the average, critical reviews for The King of Kings have been somewhat mixed, but more so positive than negative, and as seen with A Minecraft Movie last weekend, family fare can often prove to be critic-proof at the box office. Clearly, The King of Kings is set to be Angel Studios' largest post-Sound of Freedom release to date. Look for The King of Kings to debut with $21.5 million this weekend, and for the film to potentially hold up well after this weekend in the continued lead-up to Easter.
Also arriving in theatres this weekend is Disney and 20th Century's The Amateur. The James Hawes directed action thriller stars Rami Malek and Laurence Fishburne. The Amateur is playing in 3,400 locations this weekend, has Thursday preview shows beginning at 2PM and will be splitting IMAX screens this weekend with A Minecraft Movie and Warfare. Similar to The King of Kings, on the average critical reviews for The Amateur have been fairly mixed, but more so positive than negative. Critical reviews not being stronger will likely limit break-out potential for The Amateur, as will the likely audience overlap with fellow new wide releases Warfare and Drop this weekend. While not the same genre, a good opening weekend comparison for The Amateur may prove to be Disney and 20th Century's The Creator, which opened with $14.08 million back in September of 2023. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that The Amateur will debut in third place this weekend with $14.2 million.
As mentioned, the weekend's other new wide releases include A24's Warfare and Universal's Drop. Warfare is an R-rated action war film directed by Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland, set during the Iraq War, which features an ensemble cast that includes D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Will Poulter and Cosmo Jarvis. Drop is a PG-13 rated thriller directed by Christopher Landon, which stars Meghann Fahy, Brandon Sklenar and Violett Beane. Drop is playing in 3,085 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 2PM. Warfare is playing in 2,670 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning a bit later at 4PM. Both films have gone over very well with critics, especially Warfare. Although Drop is receiving the slightly larger release this weekend, there appears to be a bit more opening weekend interest and potential for Warfare. Warfare could debut in fourth place this weekend with a promising $10.0 million, while Drop could follow in fifth place with a respectable $8.8 million start.
This weekend will also see a second faith-based release about Jesus, as Fathom Events releases the third and final part of Season 5 of The Chosen series with The Chosen: Last Supper – Part 3. Last weekend The Chosen: Last Supper – Part 2 opened with $6.97 million. Last year The Chosen Season 4: Episodes 7 & 8 opened with a four-day start of $4.05 million, as the release was able to come in at 91.8 percent of the $4.41 million start of the previous The Chosen Season 4: Episodes 4 – 6. With The King of Kings also being released this weekend, it may prove difficult for The Chosen: Last Supper – Part 3 to maintain as much of its potential audience as The Chosen Season 4: Episodes 7 & 8 did last year (percentage wise). With that in mind, The Chosen: Last Supper – Part 3 could place in sixth this weekend with $5.8 million.
