Disney's Snow White will bring some needed life to the box office upon arriving in theatres this weekend. However, at the same time the latest reimagining of a classic Disney animated film isn't expected to reach the same box office heights as many previous live-action reimaginings from Disney in recent years. Snow White, a reimagining of 1937's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, was directed by Marc Webb and stars Rachel Zegler, Gal Gadot and Andrew Burnap. Snow White is playing in 4,200 locations this weekend, will be playing on IMAX screens and has Thursday preview shows beginning early at 2PM. Critical reviews for Snow White have been mixed, more so negative than positive on the average. While Snow White will no doubt have appeal with family audiences, it is unlikely that the film will have much appeal outside of family audiences. In addition to the mixed critical reviews, it's no secret that Snow White has had to deal with a lot of negative online buzz, albeit with much of that negative buzz coming from moviegoers who probably weren't that interested in the film to begin with. The situation feels quite similar to that of Disney and Pixar's Lightyear, which opened with $50.58 million domestically back in June of 2022. As with Lightyear, Snow White will have an audience on opening weekend; it just will be a significantly smaller than usual audience for a high-profile Disney release. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Disney's Snow White will debut with $43.5 million this weekend.
Meanwhile, the rest of this weekend looks to be rather lackluster. Focus' Black Bag, Disney's Captain America: Brave New World and Paramount's Novocaine will likely be fairly close to each other this weekend while occupying places second through fourth. With Black Bag having gone over well with critics and audiences alike and the film holding onto a high percentage of its average showtimes per location from last weekend, the Steven Soderbergh directed spy thriller could decline a very solid 42.2 percent this weekend to take second with $4.4 million. Captain America: Brave New World stabilized very nicely last weekend by declining 32.1 percent and it appears that the film will hold up even better this weekend by potentially declining just 26.2 percent to place in third with $4.2 million. On the heels of last weekend's $8.81 million first place start, Paramount's Novocaine likely won't hold up all that well this weekend, thanks in part to last weekend's gross including multiple days of preview grosses and the film taking a significant hit to its average showtimes per location this weekend. With that in mind, Novocaine could drop three spots and a sharp 56.9 percent from last weekend to land in fourth place with $3.8 million.
The weekend's other notable wide release is Warner Bros.'s The Alto Knights. The Barry Levinson directed crime drama stars Robert De Niro in dual roles within the film. The Alto Knights is playing in 2,651 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 3PM. Critical reviews have been largely negative for The Alto Knights, which certainly won't do any favors at the box office for a drama aimed at older moviegoers. On top of the poor reviews, there just doesn't seem to be much interest in The Alto Knights to begin with. Look for The Alto Knights to debut with a modest $3.2 million this weekend.
Fellow Warner Bros. release Mickey 17 could find itself in the same neighborhood as The Alto Knights this weekend. Mickey 17 declined a sharp 60.9 percent last weekend and with the film losing its IMAX screens this weekend, Mickey 17 will likely experience a similar percentage decline this weekend. Mickey 17 could decrease a sharp 58.3 percent this weekend to gross $3.1 million.
