Upon arriving in theatres this weekend, Warner Bros.'s Mickey 17 is set to end the three-week reign of Captain America: Brave New World at the top of the domestic box office. Mickey 17 represents the first film from acclaimed director Bong Joon Ho since 2019's Parasite, which won Academy Awards for both Best Picture and Best Director, and ended up grossing $53.37 million in its initial domestic (North America) run. Mickey 17 is a fairly pricey sci-fi dark comedy starring Robert Pattinson, Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo. The film will be playing in 3,807 locations this weekend, will be playing on IMAX screens and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 3PM. Although Mickey 17 will be a tougher sell for a film of its cost, among those interested in the film there does appear to be relatively strong demand to watch the film on IMAX and other PLF screens. Mickey 17 representing Bong Joon Ho's first post-Parasite film, the presence of Pattinson and fairly good critical reviews are all factors that should help out Mickey 17 at the box office this weekend. While there is potential for front-loading beyond this weekend (regardless of the overall reception to the film), Mickey 17 could start out with a respectable $22.2 million this weekend.
After leading the domestic box office each of the past three weekends, Disney and Marvel's Captain America: Brave New World will move into second place this weekend. Last weekend Captain America: Brave New World started to show signs of stabilizing, as the film declined 47.3 percent to gross $14.85 million. However, Captain America: Brave New World benefited from not much entering the marketplace last weekend and will have to deal with losing its IMAX screens to Mickey 17 this weekend. At the same time, with Mickey 17 unlikely to have strong appeal with more mainstream audiences, Captain America: Brave New World could still experience a percentage decline in the same neighborhood as last weekend's percentage decline. Look for Captain America: Brave New World to decline 44.8 percent this weekend to gross $8.2 million.
There likely won't be all that much separation between third and sixth place this weekend, as holdovers appear set to claim all four spots. Last weekend Focus' Last Breath opened in second with $7.85 million, NEON's The Monkey declined a sizable 54.2 percent to take third with $6.42 million, Sony and Studiocanal's Paddington in Peru decreased a solid 30.5 percent to place in fourth with $4.52 million and Universal and DreamWorks Animation's Dog Man was down just 27.5 percent to land in fifth with $4.25 million. This weekend the fairly well-received Last Breath could decline a so-so 49.1 percent to take third with $4.0 million, The Monkey could decrease a respectable 43.9 percent to place in fourth with $3.6 million, Paddington in Peru could slow by just 22.6 percent to round out the weekend's top five with $3.5 million and Dog Man could decrease by a similar 22.3 percent to follow closely behind in sixth with $3.3 million.
Also opening in wide release is Angel Studios' Rule Breakers. The Bill Guttentag directed drama about an all-girls robotics team from Afghanistan stars Nikohl Boosheri, Noorin Gulamgaus, Amber Afzali, Nina Hosseinzadeh, Sara Malal Rowe, Mariam Saraj and also features Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Thus far critical reviews have been solid on the average. Angel Studios has had a handful of films open in the $4 million to $6 million range, but it appears that Rule Breakers may open more in line with last year's Sight ($2.80 million) and this year's Brave the Dark ($2.29 million), both of which were also Angel Studios releases. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Rule Breakers will open with $2.4 million this weekend.
