In what would have been considered a major surprise only a few weeks ago, Cineverse's Terrifier 3 could debut in first place at the domestic box office this weekend. The third installment of the Terrifier horror franchise opens in 2,514 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 8PM. Terrifier 3 sees the return of director Damien Leone and stars David Howard Thornton and Lauren LaVera. On the average, critical reviews for Terrifier 3 have been good. Back in 2022, Terrifier 2 became a low-budget, word-of-mouth hit; eventually grossing $10.64 million domestically. Since then, the popularity of Art the Clown and the Terrifier films looks to have continued to grow. Thanks to that growing popularity and the much wider launch this time around (Terrifier 2 played in a moderate 770 locations during its first weekend), Terrifier 3 is extremely likely to out-gross the entire domestic performance of Terrifier 2 by the end of this weekend. The significantly softer than expected performance of Joker: Folie à Deux could also give Terrifier 3 an additional boost at the box office this weekend. Two factors that could prevent Terrifier 3 from breaking out to an even greater degree this weekend are the film being unrated and the film potentially not getting enough showtimes to fully meet demand at many theatres this weekend. There is also the possibility that Terrifier 3 could be extremely front-loaded towards opening weekend, regardless of the reception to the film. As for this weekend, BoxOfficeReport is predicting a break-out first place start of $15.5 million for Terrifier 3.

Last weekend, Universal and DreamWorks Animation's The Wild Robot declined a respectable 47.2 percent to place in second with $18.90 million. The well-received computer animated film is likely to experience significant stabilization this weekend, especially with the film holding up well during the midweek this week. A decline of just 31.2 percent would transfer into a $13.0 million take for The Wild Robot this weekend. That would likely place the film in a close second for the frame, though The Wild Robot could still potentially return to first place if Terrifier 3 doesn't break out quite to the extent as anticipated.

On the heels of last weekend's already disappointing $37.68 million start, Warner Bros.'s Joker: Folie à Deux appears to be in store for a massive second weekend decline. Due in large part to the film's poor critical reviews and poor word of mouth, Joker: Folie à Deux has been extremely front-loaded thus far and on Wednesday Joker: Folie à Deux even fell slightly behind The Wild Robot to finish in second place for the day. In November of last year, The Marvels declined 78.1 percent in its second weekend to take in $10.12 million. With the poorer reception, Joker: Folie à Deux appears likely to have an even larger second weekend percentage decline than The Marvels did, though Joker: Folie à Deux could get a slight boost in the comparison from holding onto its IMAX screens this weekend (The Marvels split IMAX screens in its second weekend with The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes). Joker: Folie à Deux could tumble 80.1 percent this weekend to land in third place with just $7.5 million.

Fellow Warner Bros. release Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will continue to hold up far better this weekend and likely won't be that far behind Joker: Folie à Deux on this weekend's chart. Last weekend Beetlejuice Beetlejuice declined a solid 37.5 percent to place in third with $10.14 million. This weekend Beetlejuice Beetlejuice may hold a bit better by declining 32.9 percent to gross $6.8 million, which should be good enough for fourth place for the frame.

Meanwhile, five lower profile new releases could potentially occupy five of the bottom six spots in this weekend's top ten (the other one of the six spots being occupied by Paramount's Transformers One).

After a solid two-week performance in platform release, Sony's Saturday Night could come out on top when it comes to this weekend's new releases not named Terrifier 3. Saturday Night, a Jason Reitman directed film about the debut of Saturday Night Live in 1975, expands to 2,309 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning early at 2PM. Critical reviews for the film have been good. While Saturday Night will likely play much stronger in larger cities, the film could be helped out this weekend by serving as an alternative choice to those moviegoers not interested in either Terrifier 3 or Joker: Folie à Deux. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Saturday Night will gross $5.4 million this weekend.

This weekend's other releases include Toho International's My Hero Academia: You're Next (the fourth theatrical film in the My Hero Academia anime series), Focus' Piece By Piece (a Morgan Neville directed film about the life of Pharrell Williams through the use of LEGO animation), Briarcliff's The Apprentice (a film about the life of Donald Trump in the 1970s & 1980s, directed by Ali Abbasi and starring Sebastian Stan as Trump), and Disney's latest re-issue of the 1993 classic The Nightmare Before Christmas. BoxOfficeReport is predicting respective weekend grosses of $5.0 million for My Hero Academia: You're Next, $4.0 million for Piece By Piece, $3.4 million for The Apprentice and $3.0 million for The Nightmare Before Christmas.
