The fall moviegoing season kicks off in a big way this weekend with the release of Warner Bros.'s highly anticipated and long awaited Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The sequel to the 1988 classic horror comedy sees the return of director Tim Burton and stars Michael, Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice also features new cast members Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Jenna Ortega, and Willem Dafoe. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is opening in an especially wide 4,575 locations this weekend, will be playing on IMAX screens and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 3PM (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice also had early access shows on Wednesday). On the average, critical reviews for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice have been good. The original Beetlejuice grossed $74.66 million during its domestic theatrical run, which adjusts to nearly $200 million with 36 years of ticket price inflation. In addition to the original Beetlejuice fanbase who has been waiting decades for a sequel, Beetlejuice seems to be a property that has brought in new fans throughout the years and the addition of Jenna Ortega in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice could help bring in even more new and younger fans.

Opening weekend potential for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice could be held back slightly due to competition from the opening week of the NFL Season and there could be some relative built-in back-loading for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice as well, due to the film likely skewing older and from the film being released in the lead-up to the Halloween holiday. Warner Bros. currently has the two largest September opening weekends of all-time with the $123.40 million launch of IT in 2017 and the $91.06 million start of IT Chapter Two in 2019. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is highly likely to open somewhere in between those two films to register the second largest September opening weekend of all-time. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will debut with a strong $107.0 million this weekend (which would represent the third largest opening weekend of 2024 thus far).

After leading the domestic box office for five of the past six frames, Disney's Deadpool & Wolverine will look to place in a distant second this weekend. Last weekend Deadpool & Wolverine had respective three-day and four-day holiday grosses of $15.47 million and $19.57 million, and passed the $600 million domestic milestone in the process. With the new competition from Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and last weekend's performance having been inflated by Labor Day weekend, Deadpool & Wolverine will likely experience a significant decline this weekend, before potentially re-stabilizing next weekend. Look for Deadpool & Wolverine to decrease 47.0 percent from last weekend's three-day frame for a weekend take of $8.2 million.

ShowBiz Direct's Reagan had an encouraging start last weekend with respective three-day and four-day grosses of $7.65 million and $10.30 million. The biopic of President Ronald Reagan has also held up well during the midweek this week, though the film is likely to have relatively strong weekdays in general. Reagan has gone over poorly with critics, but looks to be going over far better with audiences after receiving a strong A rating on CinemaScore. A very solid second weekend decline of 42.5 percent would transfer into a third place gross of $4.4 million for Reagan this weekend.

As for some of this weekend's other holdovers, Disney and 20th Century's Alien: Romulus, Sony's It Ends With Us and Universal's Twisters could find themselves bunched together in this weekend's rankings (for places fourth through sixth). Alien: Romulus (which will be losing the remainder of its IMAX screens and showtimes this weekend) could fall a sharp 57.8 from last weekend's three-day frame to gross $3.9 million, It Ends With Us could decrease a so-so 48.8 percent to gross $3.8 million and Twisters could decline by a sizable 52.1 percent to follow with $3.7 million (while Twisters held up exceptionally well last weekend, the film will be losing a significant amount of its average showtimes per location this weekend).

The weekend's other new wide release is A24's The Front Room. The R-rated horror film was directed by Max Eggers and Sam Eggers (brothers of director Robert Eggers) and stars Brandy. Thus far, initial reviews for The Front Room have been mixed. In opening the same weekend as Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, it will be difficult for The Front Room to gain traction at the box office this weekend. The decision to schedule The Front Room the same weekend as Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has always felt like a puzzling one and the film likely won't perform as well as a typical horror film from A24. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that The Front Room will debut in seventh place this weekend with $3.4 million.
