| After last weekend's successful launch of Sony's Bad Boys: Ride or Die; the summer box office will look to continue to build momentum this weekend with the release of Disney and Pixar's highly anticipated Inside Out 2. The computer animated sequel
to 2015's Inside Out was directed by Kelsey Mann and features the vocal talents of Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Lewis Black, Tony Hale, Liza Lapira, Maya Hawke and Ayo Edebiri (among others). Inside Out 2 is opening in an especially wide 4,440 locations this weekend, is
playing on IMAX screens and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 3PM. As was the case with the original Inside Out, Inside Out 2 is also proving to be a critical favorite. Inside Out opened with $90.44 million back in June of 2015 and went on to finish its domestic
run with an impressive $356.46 million. It appears that Inside Out 2 shouldn't have a problem outpacing the opening weekend performance of its processor, as Inside Out 2 is clearly one of this summer's most anticipated films, should have more built-in front-loading as a sequel and
will also benefit from nine years of ticket price inflation. Inside Out 2 may be headed for an opening weekend performance in the same neighborhood as the $120.91 million start of Disney and Pixar's Toy Story 4. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Inside Out 2 will open
with a very strong $119.0 million this weekend. That would easily represent the largest opening weekend of 2024 thus far (a mark currently held by Dune: Part Two with $82.51 million), and would also represent the largest opening weekend of any film since the $162.02 million start
of Barbie last July. |
| As mentioned, Sony's Bad Boys: Ride or Die was off to a terrific start last weekend. The well-received action sequel starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence exceeded expectations last weekend with a debut of $56.53 million. Like 2020's Bad Boys for Life,
Bad Boys: Ride or Die looks to be going over very well with audiences, as the film received a healthy A- rating on CinemaScore and continues to boast a 97 percent Verified Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. Furthermore, last weekend Bad Boys: Ride or Die didn't display much initial
front-loading for a high-profile sequel. Back in February of 2020, Bad Boys for Life declined just 45.6 percent in its second weekend to gross $34.01 million. However, unlike Bad Boys for Life, Bad Boys: Ride or Die is losing its IMAX screens and showtimes in its second
weekend (to Inside Out 2). At the same time, Bad Boys: Ride or Die will benefit from the Father's Day holiday on Sunday, which will help balance out the film's loss of IMAX screens. Look for Bad Boys: Ride or Die to decline a very respectable 46.9 percent this weekend to
place in second with $30.0 million. |
| Sony's The Garfield Movie and Paramount's IF have both displayed good holding power throughout their respective runs thus far, but in all likelihood both family films will take a significant hit from the arrival of Inside Out 2 this weekend. Last weekend
The Garfield Movie declined 28.6 percent to place in second with $10.00 million, while IF decreased 25.3 percent to follow in third place with $7.85 million. Both films should experience sharper declines this weekend. The Garfield Movie will likely remain ahead of IF in
this weekend's rankings, but IF may hold up a bit better than The Garfield Movie again this weekend (especially if IF proves to be a bit more of a Father's Day option than The Garfield Movie). The Garfield Movie could decline 46.0 percent this weekend to
gross $5.4 million and IF could decrease 40.1 percent to take in $4.7 million for the frame. That would move IF past the $100 million domestic mark and bring The Garfield Movie closer to reaching the $80 million domestic mark. |
| As for some of this weekend's other holdovers, with continued good word of mouth and the aid of Father's Day, Disney and 20th Century's Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes could decline by just 22.5 percent to round out this weekend's top five with $4.2 million. And after
debuting with a modest $7.00 million last weekend, Warner Bros. and New Line's The Watchers could have a so-so second weekend hold by declining 52.9 percent to place in sixth with $3.3 million. |
