Amazon MGM Studios will look to end what has been a modest month at the box office on a positive note this weekend with the release of Challengers. The Luca Guadagnino directed R-rated sports romance stars Zendaya, Josh O'Connor and Mike Faist. Challengers is opening in 3,477 locations this weekend, will be playing on IMAX screens and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 4PM (the film also had early access preview shows this past Monday). In the past, Guadagnino's films have been more critical friendly than box office friendly, but Challengers will look to have a presence at the box office, thanks in large part to Zendaya's starring role in the film. Furthermore, Challengers has also gone over especially well with critics, which should give the film a boost over opening weekend. Challengers should also benefit this weekend from opening in what is otherwise a pretty quiet marketplace. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Challengers will open comfortably in first place this weekend with $17.0 million.

Also opening in wide release this weekend is Lionsgate's Unsung Hero. The Richard Ramsey and Joel Smallbone directed drama about the Smallbone musical family is aimed at faith-based audiences. Joel Smallbone also stars in the film, which also features Daisy Betts, Kirrilee Berger, Jonathan Jackson, Lucas Black and Candace Cameron Bure. Unsung Hero is opening in 2,832 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 6PM (the film also had early access preview shows on Wednesday). Thus far in 2024, Lionsgate has had four different films open in the range of $6 million to $10 million (including The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare last weekend and fellow faith-based film Ordinary Angels back in late February), and it appears that Unsung Hero is likely to open in the same range this weekend. A debut of $7.2 million for Unsung Hero would likely place the film in a close race for second this weekend with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

As for Warner Bros. and Legendary's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the latest installment of the MonsterVerse franchise was down a solid 38.4 percent this past weekend to place in third with $9.57 million. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is likely to stabilize even further this weekend, thanks in part to holding onto a high percentage of its average showtimes per location from last weekend and in part to this weekend providing moviegoers an opportunity to catch the film (or catch it again), before the summer movie season kicks off next weekend with the release of Universal's The Fall Guy (as well as Sony's release of Tarot and Disney's 25th Anniversary re-issue of 20th Century's Star Wars: The Phantom Menace). Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire could decline just 26.9 percent to take in $7.0 million this weekend.

After leading the domestic box office each of the past two weekends, A24's Civil War is likely to fall to fourth place this weekend. Last weekend Civil War declined a sharp, but reasonable 56.4 percent to take in an estimated $11.13 million. Civil War should experience further stabilization this weekend, though at the same time the film will be losing the remainder of its IMAX screens and will also have to deal with likely audience overlap with Challengers. Look for Civil War to decline a respectable 44.3 percent from last weekend to take in $6.2 million.

Last weekend saw Universal's Abigail open just under consensus expectations with $10.30 million, while Lionsgate's The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare outpaced consensus expectations with a still modest start of $8.91 million. Abigail has gone over better with critics than The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare has, but The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare received a better CinemaScore rating from audiences (an A-, in comparison to the still solid B rating for Abigail). Both films could experience very similar second weekend percentage declines this weekend, as Abigail could decrease by 54.4 percent to take in $4.7 million and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare could decline 54.0 percent to gross $4.1 million.

This weekend also sees the release of Roadside Attractions' Boy Kills World. The Moritz Mohr directed comedy action-thriller stars Bill Skarsgård and also features Jessica Rothe, Michelle Dockery, Famke Janssen and Sharlto Copley. Boy Kills World is playing in 1,993 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows begging at 7PM. Critical reviews for the film have been mixed, but more so positive than negative on the average. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Boy Kills World will debut with $2.9 million this weekend.

In other theatrical news, this weekend Disney is re-issuing 20th Century's Alien for its 45th Anniversary and Universal is re-issuing 1999's The Mummy for its 25th Anniversary. Alien will be playing in 1,750 locations this weekend, while The Mummy will be playing in 1,234 locations. BoxOfficeReport isn't making official predictions for either re-issue this weekend.
