| In what is shaping up to be a modest overall weekend, it appears that it could be a close race for first place at the box office this weekend between Universal's Abigail (in its first weekend) and A24's Civil War (in its second weekend).
Abigail is the latest horror film from the directing team of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (known collectively as Radio Silence), and stars Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, Alisha Weir and Giancarlo Esposito. The R-rated horror film is
playing in 3,384 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 5PM. On the average, critical reviews for Abigail have been very good. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that a break-out performance is in store for Abigail this weekend.
Given that the title character of Abigail is a child, Abigail may prove to be a case where being rated R as opposed to being rated PG-13 limits potential for the film at the box office. Back in January, Universal's Night Swim debuted with $11.80 million and
Abigail could be headed for a similar opening weekend performance this weekend. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Abigail will start out with $12.3 million this weekend. |
| A24's Civil War debuted in first place last weekend with an estimated $25.71 million (which easily set a new opening weekend record for A24). Civil War has gone over well with critics, and the film appears to be going over good, but not great
with audiences, as Civil War received a respectable B- rating on CinemaScore (it should be reminded that films from A24 tend to hold up better at the box office than their CinemaScore ratings suggest). Civil War will take a hit from losing a sizable amount of its
IMAX showtimes from last weekend, though the film is still holding onto some of its IMAX screens and showtimes from last weekend (domestic IMAX screens will be split between a number of films this weekend, including Civil War, SPY x FAMILY CODE: White and Dune: Part Two).
Civil War could decline a sizable 56.1 percent from last weekend to take in $11.3 million this weekend. That would likely place Civil War in a close second this weekend, though the film still has a chance of holding onto first place this weekend if
Abigail were to underperform. |
| Warner Bros. and Legendary's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire started to stabilize somewhat last weekend, but still declined a sizable 50.2 percent to place in third with $15.54 million. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire should continue to stabilize
further this weekend, especially given that the film's loss of IMAX screens is already out of the way and that this weekend's new releases aren't expected to collectively light the box office on fire. A respectable 40.2 percent decline from last weekend would give
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire a third place take of $9.3 million this weekend. |
| Also opening in wide release this weekend is Lionsgate's The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. The action comedy set during World War II was directed by Guy Ritchie and features Henry Cavill, Eiza González, Alan Ritchson, Alex Pettyfer, Henry Golding and
Cary Elwes. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is playing in 2,845 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 6PM (the film also had early access shows this past Saturday). On the average, critical reviews for
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare have been good, but not great. Back in February the Henry Cavill led Argylle debuted with $17.47 million, but it appears that The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare will perform more in line with some of director Guy Ritchie's more
recent films, such as last year's The Covenant (which debuted with $6.38 million) and 2021's Wrath of Man (which opened with $8.31 million). BoxOfficeReport is predicting that The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare will open with $7.3 million this weekend. |
| This weekend also sees Sony and Crunchyroll's release of SPY x FAMILY CODE: White. The Takashi Katagiri directed anime film based on the SPY x FAMILY manga and television series is playing in 2,009 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows
beginning at 4PM. As mentioned, SPY x FAMILY CODE: White will also be playing on some IMAX screens this weekend. The built-in fanbase for SPY x FAMILY in North America doesn't appear to be as large as those for other recent anime properties handled by Crunchyroll. With that in
mind, an opening weekend performance more along the lines of the $5.00 million start for Suzume back in April of last year could be in store for SPY x FAMILY CODE: White this weekend. Look for SPY x FAMILY CODE: White to start out in fifth place with $5.5 million. |
| Meanwhile, high-profile holdovers Kung Fu Panda 4, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and Dune: Part Two should all hold up nicely this weekend. Universal and DreamWorks Animation's Kung Fu Panda 4 could slow by just 22.3 percent to gross
$4.3 million, Sony's Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire could decrease 27.0 percent to follow closely behind with $4.2 million and Warner Bros. and Legendary's Dune: Part Two (which will be returning to select IMAX screens this weekend) could decline by 26.2 percent to gross 3.2 million. |
