| It's looking to be an especially slow Super Bowl weekend at the box office. As for first place this weekend, we could be in store for a fairly close race between Universal and Apple's Argylle (in its second weekend of release) and
Focus's Lisa Frankenstein (in its first weekend of release). |
| Last weekend Universal and Apple's Argylle debuted in first place with $17.47 million. While Argylle held up fairly well throughout the film's first weekend of release, that may have had more to do with the film's older skewing
demographics than it did with early word of mouth, especially given that the film received a lackluster C+ rating on CinemaScore. In addition to the film's apparent mixed word of mouth and having to deal with Super Bowl LVIII this weekend, Argylle is also losing
its IMAX screens to this weekend's re-issue of Warner Bros.'s Dune (2021). Look for Argylle to fall a sharp 63.9 percent for a second weekend take of $6.3 million, which may be just enough for the film to remain in first place this weekend. |
| Focus's Lisa Frankenstein is a PG-13 rated horror comedy directed by Zelda Williams and stars Kathryn Newton, Cole Sprouse, Liza Soberano, Henry Eikenberry, Joe Chrest and Carla Gugino. Lisa Frankenstein is playing
in 3,143 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 5PM. On the average, critical reviews for Lisa Frankenstein have been mixed, which could limit potential for the film this weekend and beyond. A good box office
comparison for Lisa Frankenstein may prove to be Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which opened with a modest $5.32 million over Super Bowl weekend back in February of 2016. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Lisa Frankenstein will debut in a close
second place this weekend with $5.8 million. |
| Even with Super Bowl LVIII this weekend, a number of current holdovers could continue to hold up well this weekend given just how well the films in question have been holding up. Last weekend Amazon MGM Studios' The Beekeeper declined 20.9 percent
to place in third with $5.28 million, Warner Bros.'s Wonka decreased 17.4 percent to follow in fourth with $4.68 million and Universal and Illumination's Migration was down 14.4 percent to take fifth place with $4.19 million. This
weekend Wonka could decline just 23.1 percent to gross $3.6 million, The Beekeeper could decrease by a very solid 33.7 percent to take in $3.5 million and Migration could decrease a slim 18.9 percent for a haul of $3.4 million over the frame. |
| This weekend also sees the release of Bleecker Street's Out of Darkness in 897 locations, the theatrical re-issue of Disney and Pixar's Turning Red in 1,560 locations and the mentioned re-issue of Warner Bros.'s Dune (2021). Among the
three films, the re-issue of Dune likely has the best chance of creeping into this weekend's top ten list (especially with the film playing on IMAX screens), though at the same time given that no official location count has been provided for the re-issue
thus far, it's also possible that grosses may not be reported for the Dune re-issue this weekend. BoxOfficeReport isn't making official predictions for Dune, Turning Red of Out of Darkness this weekend. |
