| Universal and Apple's Argylle won't have a problem taking first place at the domestic box office this weekend, but at the same time it appears that the film is headed for a lackluster start. The spy comedy was
directed by Matthew Vaughn and features an ensemble cast that includes Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O'Hara, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, John Cena, and Samuel L. Jackson. Argylle is playing in 3,605 locations
this weekend, is playing on IMAX screens and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 5PM. While director Vaughn certainly has a following, interest in Argylle just seems to have never taken off (at least domestically). On top of that, the film's
surprisingly largely negative critical reviews are likely to turn off a lot of moviegoers who are still on the fence about the film. This February's release schedule being relatively light could also help add a bit of built-in back-loading
for Argylle. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Argylle will debut with $15.5 million this weekend. |
| Looking beyond Argylle this weekend, it could be especially tight between a number of holdovers in the marketplace. With continued good word of mouth and Argylle not looking to light the box office on fire, Amazon
MGM Studios' The Beekeeper could decline a very solid 29.6 percent to take in $4.7 million. Warner Bros.'s Wonka could decline a slim 18.9 percent to gross $4.6 million, which would move the film past the $200 million domestic mark. Fellow
family film Universal and Illumination's Migration has been holding up extremely well as of late and could continue to do so this weekend by decreasing a very slim 8.1 percent to gross $4.5 million. And after leading the domestic box office for the
past three frames, but doing so in a fairly front-loaded manner, Paramount's Mean Girls could stabalize some this weekend by declining a solid 36.3 percent to gross $4.4 million. |
| Also arriving in theatres this weekend is Fathom Events' release of The Chosen Season 4: Episodes 1 – 3. Fathom Events has had past success with its theatrical event releases of episodes of The Chosen faith based
television series, though last year's The Chosen Season 3 – Finale wasn't quite as successful with respective three-day and four-day starts of $3.62 million and $5.29 million. The Chosen Season 4: Episodes 1 – 3 could get a
bit of a boost in comparison thanks to Season 4 of the series debuting exclusively in theatres. In two weeks on February 15, Season 4: Episodes 4 – 6 will begin playing in theatres, while Season 4: Episodes 7 & 8 will begin playing two weeks
later on February 29. As for The Chosen Season 4: Episodes 1 – 3, which began playing on Thursday, the event release could be in store for respective three-day weekend and four-day grosses of $4.3 million and $6.0 million. |
