| Universal, Illumination and Nintendo's The Super Mario Bros. Movie will have no problem making it four weekends in a row at the top of the domestic box office this weekend. Last weekend the computer
animated blockbuster declined a very solid 35.1 percent to gross $59.93 million, which represented the seventh largest third weekend gross of all-time. With The Super Mario Bros. Movie looking to have a stronger showtimes per
location hold this weekend than last weekend, not much being expected of this weekend's new releases and this weekend providing an opportunity for moviegoers to catch The Super Mario Bros. Movie (or catch it again) before Disney's
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 enters the marketplace next weekend, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is likely to hold up even better this weekend than it did last weekend. The Super Mario Bros. Movie could decline just
29.1 percent to take in $42.5 million this weekend. That would represent the fourth largest fourth weekend gross of all-time (just above the fourth weekend take of Star Wars: The Force Awakens). |
| Last weekend saw Warner Bros. and New Line's Evil Dead Rise exceed expectations with a strong second place opening weekend take of $24.50 million. Evil Dead Rise has gone over well with critics and also looks
to be going over well with audiences, as the film received a solid B rating on CinemaScore. Back in April of 2013, Evil Dead (2013) declined a sharp 63.2 percent in its second weekend to gross $9.49 million. While
Evil Dead Rise will also experience initial front-loading, the film could hold up a bit better than Evil Dead (2013) did in its second weekend, due in part to the overall positive reception to Evil Dead Rise. Look for
Evil Dead Rise to decline 55.9 percent this weekend for a second place second weekend take of $10.8 million. |
| The weekend's top new release looks to be Lionsgate's Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. The film, which is based on the Judy Blume novel, was directed by Kelly Fremon Craig and stars Rachel McAdams, Abby Ryder Fortson and
Kathy Bates. Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret is playing in 3,343 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 3PM. Critical reviews for the film have been very strong. With that said, anticipation
for Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret appears to be rather modest. The film's PG-13 rating may also limit its potential with family audiences. If the film goes over as well with initial audiences, as it has with critics, perhaps
Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret could hold up well as an alternative choice throughout May. As for this weekend, BoxOfficeReport is predicting a third place start of $8.8 million for Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. |
| As for some of this weekend's other new releases, fellow Lionsgate release Sisu may be able to outpace Sony's Big George Foreman in the race for fourth place, despite playing in roughly only one third as many locations this
weekend. Sisu, an action film from Finland set during World War II, was directed by Jalmari Helander and stars Jorma Tommila and Aksel Hennie. While Sisu is only playing in 1,006 locations this weekend, the film looks to have a better than usual
showtimes per location average for a release of this magnitude and will also be playing on Dolby screens. Thursday previews for Sisu begin at 3PM. As with Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, critical reviews for Sisu have been
very strong. Sisu also looks like it will appeal to fans of the John Wick series. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a debut of $5.2 million for Sisu this weekend, which would give the film a healthy per-location average of $5,169 for the frame. |
| Sony's Big George Foreman, a sports biopic about boxer George Foreman, was directed by George Tillman Jr. and stars Khris Davis. Big George Foreman is playing in 3,054 locations this weekend and has
Thursday preview shows beginning at 4PM. The AFFIRM Films film is being aimed at faith-based audiences. Despite Foreman being a well-known figure, there just doesn't seem to be much buzz around the film. The decision to open
Big George Foreman so soon after Creed III (as well as Air) probably isn't helping matters either. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a modest opening weekend take of $4.8 million for Big George Foreman. |
| Last weekend saw Lionsgate's John Wick: Chapter 4, Paramount's Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Amazon Studios' Air all hold up well. John Wick: Chapter 4 declined 27.4 percent to take fourth
with $5.84 million, Dungeons & Dragons decreased a very similar 26.9 percent to place in fifth with $5.50 million and Air was down 30.6 percent to land in sixth place with $5.45 million. All three films are likely to hold up even better
this weekend than they did last weekend. Look for John Wick: Chapter 4 to decrease 21.3 percent to take in $4.6 million, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves to decline a slim 18.2 percent to gross $4.5 million and for Air to slow by 24.7 percent for a
weekend take of $4.1 million. |
| This weekend also sees the return of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi to theatres for the film's 40th anniversary. Disney is re-releasing Return of the Jedi in an estimated 475 locations this weekend. With
Star Wars: Return of the Jedi likely to have a strong per-location average; that may be enough locations for the film to sneak into the bottom of this weekend's top ten chart. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that
Star Wars: Return of the Jedi will gross $2.9 million this weekend. |
