| As an eventful month of March at the box office comes to an end this weekend, the marketplace will look to maintain momentum with the release of Paramount's Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. The fantasy
action film based on the Dungeons & Dragons property was directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, and features Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will
be playing in 3,855 locations this weekend and will be playing on IMAX screens. Traditional Thursday preview shows for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves start at 3PM and the film has also had prior Early Access screenings.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has gone over very well with critics, which could provide a bit of a boost for the film this weekend and perhaps more so beyond this weekend (for a film that could have been quite front-loaded otherwise). Earlier this March fellow
Paramount release Scream VI opened with $44.45 million, while Warner's Shazam! Fury of the Gods debuted with $30.11 million a week later. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves having an opening weekend performance somewhere in between those
two films feels very reasonable. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will debut in first place this weekend with $37.0 million, with the film also having the potential for relatively strong holding power throughout April if
it goes over as well with audiences as it has with critics. |
| Lionsgate's John Wick: Chapter 4 is coming off of an impressive first place debut of $73.82 million last weekend. That was 29.9 percent stronger than the $56.82 million debut of
John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum back in 2019. While critical reviews and word of mouth are both excellent for John Wick: Chapter 4 (the film received a strong A rating on CinemaScore), there is the possibility for more
initial front-loading for John Wick: Chapter 4 than there was for John Wick: Chapter 3 simply from being the next sequel in the series. On the other hand, the even stronger overall reception for
John Wick: Chapter 4, and John Wick: Chapter 3 having had to deal with stronger new competition in its second weekend with the debut of Disney's live-action version of Aladdin, are factors that should help the second weekend
hold for John Wick: Chapter 4 (which is losing its IMAX screens to Dungeons & Dragons this weekend). John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum declined 56.7 percent in its second weekend to gross $24.59 million and with all factors
considered, John Wick: Chapter 4 could be in store for the same type of second weekend percentage decline this weekend. A 56.7 percent decline would transfer into a strong second place take of $32.0 million for John Wick: Chapter 4 this weekend. |
| Last weekend Warner Bros. and New Line's Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Paramount's Scream VI and MGM's Creed III were all fairly close to one another with respective weekend grosses of $9.34 million, $8.33 million and $8.19 million.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods was down a very sharp 69.0 percent in its second weekend, while Scream VI declined 51.9 percent and Creed III decreased 46.7 percent. With Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves not expected to have anywhere near the same
opening weekend impact that John Wick: Chapter 4 had last weekend, all three holdovers in question are likely to hold up better this weekend than they did last weekend (especially Shazam! Fury of the Gods). Look for all three films to remain close to one another in this
weekend's box office rankings, as Creed III could slow 40.2 percent to take third with $4.9 million, Scream VI could decrease 42.4 percent to gross a very similar $4.8 million and Shazam! Fury of the Gods could decline 49.7 percent to follow closely behind with $4.7 million. |
| This weekend also sees the release of Angel Studios' His Only Son. The faith-based drama about Abraham was directed by David Helling and features Nicolas Mouawad, Sara Seyed, Edaan Moskowitz and Daniel da Silva. After having
recent success with The Chosen event releases in association with Fathom Events, Angel Studios is distributing His Only Son on its own. The most recent The Chosen event release, The Chosen Season 3: Finale had a three-day opening weekend
of $3.62 million back in February. His Only Son could start off with a similar $3.4 million this weekend, which would place the film in sixth for the frame. |
| Focus' A Thousand and One opens in semi-wide release this weekend in 926 locations. The A.V. Rockwell directed drama stars Teyana Taylor. Critical reviews for A Thousand and One have been especially strong. BoxOfficeReport is
predicting a start of $1.4 million for A Thousand and One this weekend. |
