| It's looking to be a fairly close race for first place at the box office over Super Bowl weekend between Warner's Magic Mike's Last Dance and Paramount's 25 Year Anniversary re-issue of
Titanic. Magic Mike's Last Dance represents the third installment of the Magic Mike series. The sequel sees the return of director
Steven Soderbergh and star Channing Tatum, while Salma Hayek Pinault also stars in the film. Magic Mike's Last Dance was originally intended to be an HBO Max
streaming release, but is instead receiving a scaled back theatrical release (similar to last month's House Party). While Magic Mike's Last Dance isn't going
all that wide this weekend, when it comes to this weekend's race with the re-issue of Titanic, it appears that on the average Magic Mike's Last Dance will be receiving more showtimes per location than
Titanic will this weekend. Thursday preview shows for Magic Mike's Last Dance start at 5PM, while critical reviews for the film have been mixed. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that
Magic Mike's Last Dance will debut in first place this weekend with $11.5 million. |
| Paramount's Titanic returns to theatres this weekend for a 25 Year Anniversary re-issue. The James Cameron directed blockbuster event film starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio was initially
released back in December of 1997 and last received a major domestic re-issue in April of 2012. Titanic will re-launch in 2,464 locations this weekend, with the film playing on higher-priced 3D screens, as well as on IMAX 3D screens. Thursday
preview shows for the film begin at 3PM. This re-issue of Titanic isn't expected to open as strong as the 2012 re-issue, which had a three-day opening weekend of $17.29 million and a five-day start of $25.65 million, but it
could perform similarly to the $10.53 million launch of last year's re-issue of Avatar, especially since Titanic will be playing in more locations than Avatar did (1,860 locations) and the re-issue of Avatar didn’t
have Thursday preview shows. Look for the re-issue of Titanic to place in a close second this weekend with an estimated $10.0 million. |
| Fellow Paramount release 80 For Brady is coming off a solid second place debut of $12.70 million last weekend. The sports themed comedy has also held up nicely during the midweek this week, though the
film's demographic breakdown is likely inflating midweek business. Critical reviews for 80 For Brady have been mixed, but the film looks to be going over better with audiences given a healthy A- CinemaScore rating. Back in 2018,
Book Club declined just 25.8 percent in its second weekend (to gross $10.07 million), but that was with the aid of a holiday weekend and without competition from the Super Bowl (which is especially likely to negatively impact 80 For Brady in a big way on Sunday). A very solid 37.0 percent decline
would transfer into a third place take of $8.0 million for 80 For Brady this weekend. |
| Last weekend Disney and 20th Century's Avatar: The Way of Water declined just 29.0 percent to place in third with $11.34 million, while Universal and DreamWorks Animation's Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was only down 25.0 percent to follow in fourth with
$7.88 million. Avatar: The Way of Water should take a bigger percentage hit this weekend, in part from losing IMAX screens and showtimes to Titanic. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will likely hold up similarly as
it did last weekend, as the film is holding onto most of its locations and showtimes from last weekend and in general family films typically hold up better than non-family fare over Super Bowl weekend. Look for Avatar: The Way of Water to decrease
a solid 38.2 percent to take fourth this weekend with $7.0 million and for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish to decline a slim 23.8 percent to place in fifth with $6.0 million. |
| After debuting in first place last weekend with a respectable $14.13 million, Universal's Knock at the Cabin is likely to experience a significant second weekend decline this weekend. In addition to the
film's mixed reception with critics, Knock at the Cabin doesn't looking to be going over all that well with audiences, as the film received a C rating on CinemaScore. In general, films directed by M. Night Shyamalan also tend to
experience significant second weekend declines regardless of reception (2021's Old decreased 59.3 percent in its second weekend to gross $6.86 million). Knock at the Cabin could fall a sharp 61.8 percent to land in sixth place
this weekend with $5.4 million. |
