Disney and 20th Century's Barbarian appears set to lead what should be another slow overall frame at the box office this weekend. The Zach Cregger directed R-rated horror film stars Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård and Justin Long. Barbarian is opening in 2,340 locations this weekend and will have Thursday preview shows beginning at 7PM (the film also had select early access preview shows on Wednesday). Barbarian has gone over very well with critics, which should help the film at least somewhat this weekend. At the same time, interest in Barbarian still feels relatively modest and the film's location count and rather average showtimes per location average will make a break-out performance much tougher this weekend. In recent weeks, the R-rated Beast started out with $11.58 million, while the PG-13 rated The Invitation opened with $6.81 million. It appears likely that Barbarian will open somewhere in between the debuts of those two films. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Barbarian will debut with $8.7 million this weekend (for a very respectable per-location average of $3,718 for the frame).

In general, holdovers this weekend will have to deal with the start of the NFL season and with last weekend's grosses being inflated by Saturday's relatively strong grosses on National Cinema Day and by the Labor Day weekend frame as a whole. With that said, it appears that Paramount's Top Gun: Maverick and Sony's Bullet Train are both still in store for good holds this weekend. Top Gun: Maverick could decline just 26.8 percent from last weekend's three-day performance to take second place this weekend with $4.4 million, while Sony's Bullet Train might decrease a very solid 30.9 percent to follow fairly closely behind in third with $4.0 million. Top Gun: Maverick surpassed the $700 million domestic mark this past Monday and Bullet Train is in great shape to eventually surpass the $100 million domestic mark.

Disney and Star Studios' Brahmastra Part One: Shiva is opening in moderate / semi-wide release this weekend in 810 locations. The Hindi-language fantasy adventure film was directed by Ayan Mukerji and stars Amitabh Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Mouni Roy. Brahmastra Part One: Shiva was relatively pricey for a film from India and is the first film of a planned trilogy. Brahmastra Part One: Shiva will be playing on IMAX screens this weekend and will also have Thursday preview shows beginning at 5PM. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a fourth place start of $3.9 million for Brahmastra Part One: Shiva this weekend (for a solid per-location average of $4,815 for the frame).

As for some of this weekend's other holdovers, Sony's The Invitation could decrease a respectable 42.6 percent to take fifth with $2.8 million, Warner's DC League of Super-Pets could slow a sizable 50.3 percent from last weekend's performance (inflated by National Cinema Day) to follow in sixth with $2.5 million, Universal's Beast could decline a respectable 45.4 percent to claim seventh with $2.2 million and Sony's re-issue of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is already losing 722 locations from this past week, could fall a very sharp 63.9 percent to land in eighth place with $1.95 million.
