| With no new major releases entering the marketplace this weekend Sony's Bullet Train should remain in first place at the domestic box office. The David Leitch directed R-rated action comedy starring
Brad Pitt is coming off of a solid first place debut of $30.03 million. While critical reviews for Bullet Train have been mixed, word of mouth among audiences appears to be solid (the film received a B+ rating on CinemaScore). Although
Bullet Train doesn't face any new major competition this weekend, the film will still be taking a hit to its average showtimes per location this weekend, due in part to losing some of its various premium screen showtimes to
Top Gun: Maverick and some of its IMAX showtimes to the IMAX exclusive re-issue of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. Two weeks ago, fellow R-rated film Nope declined 58.1 percent in its second weekend and
Bullet Train could be headed for a similar second weekend decline of its own. Look for Bullet Train to decrease a sharp 56.7 percent to take in $13.0 million this weekend. |
| Meanwhile, it could be a very close race for second place this weekend between Paramount's Top Gun: Maverick and Warner's DC League of Super-Pets. Last weekend DC League of Super-Pets was
comfortably ahead of Top Gun: Maverick ($11.05 million to $7.01 million), but this weekend Top Gun: Maverick will see its theatre count increase by a significant 421 locations for a total of 3,181 locations
(including getting some premium screen showtimes back), while DC League of Super-Pets will be playing in 529 fewer locations this weekend than last weekend (for a total of 3,803 locations). This weekend's changes in location
counts in combination with Top Gun: Maverick obviously having stronger word of mouth could lead to Top Gun: Maverick having the slight edge between the two films this weekend. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that
Top Gun: Maverick will increase 5.6 percent to take in $7.4 million and that DC League of Super-Pets will decrease a solid 33.9 percent to gross $7.3 million. |
| In general, holdovers in wide release should hold up nicely this weekend. Universal's Nope could decline 35.3 percent to take in $5.5 million, fellow Universal release Minions: The Rise of Gru could
decrease 24.0 percent to gross $5.4 million, Disney's Thor: Love and Thunder could drop 31.2 percent to register $5.3 million and Sony's Where the Crawdads Sing could slow by only 22.5 percent for a weekend take of
$4.4 million. |
| After a promising start in platform release last weekend ($226,653 from 6 locations in New York and Los Angeles), A24's Bodies Bodies Bodies will receive a major expansion this weekend. The Halina Reijn
directed dark horror comedy features an ensemble cast that includes Amandla Stenberg, Maria Bakalova, Rachel Sennott, Myha'la Herrold, Chase Sui Wonders, Pete Davidson and Lee Pace. Critical reviews for Bodies Bodies Bodies have
been strong. While Bodies Bodies Bodies won't be going as wide as fellow A24 horror film X opened back in March, Bodies Bodies Bodies could potentially still perform similarly to the $4.28 million start of
X due in part to likely having at least a bit more mainstream appeal and in part to arriving in a weaker overall marketplace. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Bodies Bodies Bodies will gross $4.2 million this weekend. |
| Also arriving in the marketplace this weekend are Universal's IMAX exclusive re-issue of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (in 389 locations) and Lionsgate's Fall (in 1,548 locations). Fall is a
PG-13 thriller directed by Scott Mann that stars Grace Caroline Currey and Virginia Gardner. Both films are likely to open outside of the top ten this weekend, with E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial potentially having the slight edge
between the two (despite being in far fewer locations). The IMAX exclusive re-issue of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial could take in $1.9 million this weekend, while Fall could start out with $1.7 million. Gravitas Ventures'
Mack & Rita; a comedy directed by Katie Aselton and starring Diane Keaton, Taylour Paige and Elizabeth Lail, is receiving a wide release this weekend. BoxOfficeReport isn't making an official prediction for Mack & Rita, which
is likely to debut below both the E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial IMAX re-issue and Fall. |
