| The final weekend of July sees the release of Warner's DC League of Super-Pets. The computer animated film from Warner Animation Group is based on the DC Comics Legion of Super-Pets animal superhero team.
DC League of Super-Pets was directed by Jared Stern and features of the vocal talent of Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Kate McKinnon, John Krasinski, Vanessa Bayer and Keanu Reeves. DC League of Super-Pets is opening in a
very wide 4,314 locations this weekend. The film isn't playing on IMAX screens, but it will be splitting non-IMAX PLF screens with Nope this weekend. Thursday preview shows for DC League of Super-Pets begin early at 2PM. On
the average, critical reviews for DC League of Super-Pets have been respectable. Two of the better recent opening weekend comparisons for DC League of Super-Pets could prove to be the $31.05 million debut of last year's
Space Jam: A New Legacy (which was also from Warner Animation Group) and the $23.95 million start of The Bad Guys earlier this year. DC League of Super-Pets could open somewhere in between those two films, especially
with the aid of a fairly high showtimes per location average this weekend. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that DC League of Super-Pets will debut in first place this weekend with $28.5 million (for a per-location average of $6,606 for the frame). |
| Last weekend saw Universal's Nope get off to a solid first place start with $44.37 million. While the Jordan Peele directed R-rated sci-fi horror film was quite front-loaded last weekend, the film's
midweek holds the past few days have been more promising. Word of mouth for Nope looks to be solid, as the film received a B rating on CinemaScore; the same rating received by both 2019's Us and last year's Candyman. Us declined 53.3 percent
in its second weekend, while Candyman (2021) experienced a nearly identical 53.2 percent second weekend decrease. With that in mind, it wouldn't be a surprise for Nope to experience a similar decline this weekend.
Nope could also get at least a small boost this weekend from this weekend's only new wide release being an animated film. A 53.8 percent decline would transfer into a $20.5 million second place take for Nope this weekend. |
| Disney's Thor: Love and Thunder is coming off of a third weekend performance which saw the film decline 51.6 percent to place in second with $22.56 million. After losing its IMAX screens to Nope last
weekend, Thor: Love and Thunder has been showing signs of stabilizing during the midweek this week. However, some of the stabilization will be offset by Thor: Love and Thunder playing in a significant 720 fewer locations
than last weekend (for a total of 3,650 locations this weekend). And while DC League of Super-Pets may not be direct competition to Thor: Love and Thunder, there should be at least some overlap between the audiences for
the two films. Thor: Love and Thunder could decline 38.8 percent this weekend to place in third with $13.8 million. That would also move Thor: Love and Thunder past the $300 million domestic mark. |
| Universal and Illumination's Minions: The Rise of Gru continued to hold up well last weekend by declining 32.8 percent to take third place with $18.04 million. With DC League of Super-Pets entering
the marketplace this weekend, Minions: The Rise of Gru likely won't hold up as well this weekend as it did last weekend. At the same time, with DC League of Super-Pets not expected to break out this weekend, there should
be enough room in the family marketplace for Minions: The Rise of Gru to have a solid hold this weekend, especially given the film's strong word of mouth. Look for Minions: The Rise of Gru to decline 37.9 percent to claim
fourth place with $11.2 million this weekend. |
| Paramount's Top Gun: Maverick, Sony's Where the Crawdads Sing and Warner's Elvis have all been holding up very well during the midweek this week in comparison to last week. All three films
should continue to hold up very well over the weekend, especially with all three holding onto most of their locations and showtimes from last weekend. Top Gun: Maverick could decrease a slim 14.3 percent to claim fifth with
$8.8 million, Where the Crawdads Sing could decline just 23.7 percent to place in sixth with $7.9 million and Elvis could decline a slim 14.9 percent to follow in eighth place with $5.6 million. |
| As for some of this weekend's other holdovers in wide release, Universal's The Black Phone could decrease 31.6 percent to take eighth with $2.4 million and fellow Universal release
Jurassic World Dominion could decline a similar 32.5 percent to follow in ninth with $2.1 million. |
| Opening in moderate / semi-wide release this weekend is Focus' Vengeance. The dark comedy / thriller was written, directed by and also stars B. J. Novak. Vengeance also stars Boyd Holbrook, Issa Rae and Ashton Kutcher. On
the average, critical reviews for Vengeance have been good. Vengeance will be playing in 998 locations this weekend and will have Thursday preview shows beginning at 7PM. Two weeks ago, fellow Focus release
Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris was given a very similar release and went on to debut with $1.95 million. Vengeance could have a similar opening weekend performance this weekend, perhaps just slightly under the start of
Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Vengeance will start out with $1.8 million this weekend, which would be good enough for tenth place for the frame and would transfer into a per-location average of $1,804. |
