| On the heels of last weekend's exceptional start, Paramount's Top Gun: Maverick is set to continue to soar at the box office this weekend. The critically acclaimed Joseph Kosinski directed
sequel starring Tom Cruise is coming off of respective three-day and four-day debuts of $126.71 million and $160.51 million. In addition to the strength of the film's opening
(which set a new four-day opening weekend record for Memorial Day weekend), Top Gun: Maverick has been displaying terrific daily holds thus far (especially for a film of its size). On Wednesday,
Top Gun: Maverick declined a very slim 6 percent to take in $14.82 million for the day. That type of first-Wednesday hold is pretty much unheard of for an event film during a non-holiday period. Clearly the film's
glowing critical reviews and very strong word of mouth (Top Gun: Maverick received a perfect A+ rating on CinemaScore), have really kicked into gear already. |
| Top Gun: Maverick will also benefit this weekend from not facing any new major competition (which is rare for the weekend after Memorial Day weekend) and from moviegoers who want to catch the film
(or catch it again) before Universal's highly anticipated Jurassic World Dominion enters the marketplace next Friday (June 10). The film's strong performance on IMAX and other PLF screens and strong appeal with both older
moviegoers and moviegoers living in more rural areas are also all factors that should help contribute to a stronger than usual second weekend hold for Top Gun: Maverick this weekend. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that
Top Gun: Maverick will decline just 43 percent this weekend for a second weekend take of $72.0 million. That would represent the second largest second weekend gross since the re-opening of domestic theatres
(behind only last year's Spider-Man: No Way Home). |
| Last weekend saw Disney's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness decline 50 percent to take second place with $16.07 million over the three-day frame
(the film's four-day holiday gross came in at $20.34 million). This weekend should see Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hold up significantly better that last weekend, especially since as mentioned,
there are no major new releases entering the marketplace this weekend, prior to Jurassic World Dominion entering the marketplace next weekend. A 35 percent decline from last weekend would transfer into a second
place take of $10.5 million for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness this weekend, as the film continues to approach the $400 million domestic mark. |
| Disney's release of 20th Century's The Bob's Burgers Movie is coming off of respective three-day and four-day third place starts of $12.42 million and $14.80 million. While that was on the
high-end of expectations, The Bob's Burgers Movie has been displaying expected front-loading thus far (which is normal for a theatrical adaptation of a fan-driven television series). The Bob's Burgers Movie has
gone over well with both critics and audiences (the film received a strong A rating on CinemaScore), which could give the film a small boost this weekend, as could the film having a fairly strong average showtimes per
location hold in comparison to last weekend. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that The Bob's Burgers Movie will decline a sharp 60.5 percent this weekend to continue to claim third place with $4.9 million. |
| Universal releases The Bad Guys and Downton Abbey: A New Era could find themselves in a close race for fourth place this weekend. Last weekend Downton Abbey: A New Era came out
on top between the two films over both the three-day and four-day frames, but this weekend The Bad Guys could have the slight edge between the two films in the rankings. A slim 18 percent decline would give
The Bad Guys $3.6 million for the frame, while a respectable 39.5 percent decrease would transfer into a similar $3.5 million take for Downton Abbey: A New Era. |
| As for some of this weekend's other holdovers, A24's Everything Everywhere All At Once could decline a slim 19 percent from last weekend to place in sixth with $2.0 million, while Paramount's
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 could decrease just 27 percent to follow in seventh place with $1.8 million. |
| While there are no new traditional wide releases this weekend, both NEON's Crimes of the Future and IFC Films' Watcher are being released semi-wide. Crimes of the Future is a David Cronenberg
directed horror film starring Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux and Kristen Stewart. Watcher is a thriller directed by Chloe Okuno, which stars Maika Monroe, Karl Glusman and Burn Gorman. On the average, both films have gone over
well with critics. Watcher is opening in 764 locations this weekend and while an official location count for Crimes of the Future isn't available as of publishing, the film is expected to be receiving a fairly similar
sized launch as Watcher this weekend. BoxOfficeReport isn't making official weekend predictions for either Crimes of the Future or Watcher this weekend, but Crimes of the Future could find itself alongside
Paramount's The Lost City for eighth and ninth place this weekend, while Watcher might perform softer to land in tenth place for the frame. |
