Disney's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to easily lead the domestic box office for a second consecutive frame this weekend. The Sam Raimi directed superhero film starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen is coming off of an impressive opening weekend performance of $187.42 million, which represented the second largest debut since the re-opening of domestic theatres. Previous high-profile Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films that have kicked off the summer moviegoing season in more recent years have tended to experience second weekend declines in the area of 55 percent to 60 percent. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness could experience a second weekend decline a bit larger than that, as the film doesn't seem to be going over with audiences quite as well as the typical MCU film, given the film's (still solid) B+ rating on CinemaScore and significant initial front-loading last weekend.

With that said, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has already shown relative signs of stabilization during the midweek this week and will also get a boost this weekend from holding onto a very high percentage of its showtimes from last weekend (including IMAX screens). This past November, the similarly received Eternals declined 62 percent in its second weekend and that could prove to be a very good comparison for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness this weekend. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will decline a sharp, but understandable, 62 percent for a second weekend gross of $70.5 million. That would represent the second largest second weekend gross since re-opening (behind only last year's Spider-Man: No Way Home) and would move Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness just past the $300 million domestic mark.

Last weekend saw Universal and DreamWorks Animation's The Bad Guys decline a respectable 41 percent to place in a very distant second with $9.57 million. Even The Bad Guys was impacted by the debut of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness last weekend; in part from the noteworthy amount of average showtimes per location The Bad Guys lost last weekend. The Bad Guys should be able to re-stabilize this weekend, especially with the film's average showtimes per location looking to hold up far better this weekend than it did last weekend. Look for The Bad Guys to decline a slim 18.5 percent this weekend to hold steady in second place with $7.8 million.

Entering the marketplace this weekend is fellow Universal release Firestarter. The R-rated horror remake was directed by Keith Thomas and stars Zac Efron and Ryan Kiera Armstrong. Firestarter is being released day-and-date this weekend; theatrically in 3,412 locations and via streaming on Peacock. Firestarter is also having Thursday preview shows beginning at 5PM. Anticipation for Firestarter feels rather limited, which makes sense given that the 1984 version of Firestarter didn't light the box office on fire in its own right. Firestarter also being available on Peacock and not yet having published critical reviews (as of late Thursday afternoon) won't help matters for the film at the box office this weekend either. Day-and-date comparisons for Firestarter include Universal (Peacock) release Marry Me, which opened with $7.95 million back in February and Warner Bros. (HBO Max) release Malignant, which opened with $5.43 million this past September. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Firestarter will debut in third place this weekend with a modest $5.9 million (for a per-location average of $1,729).

With the opening weekend of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness behind us, holdovers in general should re-stabilize this weekend. Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog 2 could decline only 25 percent to place in fourth with $4.5 million, A24's Everything Everywhere All At Once could decrease a very slim 4 percent to claim fifth with $3.4 million, Warner's Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore could slow 37 percent to take sixth with $2.7 million and Paramount's The Lost City could ease just 28 percent to follow in seventh with $2.0 million.

This weekend also sees Roadside Attractions release Family Camp in a semi-wide 855 locations. The Brian Cates directed family comedy stars Tommy Woodard and Eddie James (the comedy duo known as The Skit Guys). Family Camp is being aimed at faith-based audiences and could also benefit a bit from there not being much competition for family audiences at the moment, especially when it comes to non-animated family films. Thursday preview shows for the film began at 2PM. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Family Camp will debut with $1.6 million this weekend, which would give the film a respectable pre-location average of $1,871 for the frame.
