Wednesday Morning Tuesday Box Office Update:

Disney's Encanto started its Thanksgiving holiday weekend launch with an estimated $1.5 million from Tuesday preview shows that began at 6PM. Encanto is being released exclusively in theatres (in 3,980 locations beginning on Wednesday) for 30 days of theatrical exclusivity, before also becoming available via streaming on Disney+ beginning on Christmas Eve (December 24). Encanto, the latest computer animated film from Walt Disney Animation Studios, was directed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush, and features original songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Critical reviews for the film have been strong. Back in 2017, Disney and Pixar's Coco started out with an estimated $2.3 million from Tuesday preview shows, before going to gross $72.91 million over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday frame ($50.80 million of which came from the traditional three-day weekend). Encanto could prove to be at least somewhat more front-loaded over the next few days than Coco was due in part to the changes in the current theatrical environment (especially for family fare). Prior to the release of the film's Tuesday preview gross, BoxOfficeReport predicted respective three-day weekend and five-day grosses of $31.5 million and $46.0 million for Encanto.

On Tuesday, Sony's Ghostbusters: Afterlife remained in first place with an estimated $4.7 million for the day. That represented a 22 percent increase over Monday's performance. Yesterday saw Ghostbusters: Afterlife pass the $50 million domestic mark, as the film has grossed an estimated $52.56M through its first five days of release. Over the holiday frame, Ghostbusters: Afterlife will be helped out by strong word of mouth and by holding onto IMAX screens. At the same time, the film will also be dealing with at least some built-in front-loading and losing a noteworthy percentage of its average showtimes per location from last weekend. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Ghostbusters: Afterlife will decline a sizable, but understandable 48 percent over the three-day frame to place in second with $23.0 million. The film could be looking at a five-day holiday gross in the neighborhood of $33.0 million.

United Artists Releasing and MGM's House of Gucci was off to a promising start on Tuesday night with an estimated $1.3 million from preview shows that began at 7PM. The Ridley Scott directed crime drama stars Lady Gaga and Adam Driver and also features Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons, Salma Hayek and Al Pacino. House of Gucci is opening exclusively in theatres (in 3,441 locations beginning on Wednesday). While critical reviews for House of Gucci have been mixed, there is still a high level of buzz surrounding Lady Gaga's performance as Patrizia Reggiani. In general, dramas aimed at adult audiences have struggled since re-opening, but House of Gucci could prove to be an exception, thanks in part to Lady Gaga and her fanbase. BoxOfficeReport's respective three-day weekend and five-day predictions for House of Gucci (prior to the release of the film's preview gross) are $14.7 million and $23.0 million.

The weekend's other new wide release is Sony and Screen Gems' Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. The Johannes Roberts directed action horror film represents both the seventh film of the Resident Evil franchise and a reboot of the series. Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City grossed an estimated $0.935 million from Tuesday previews, which was respectable, though the film's Tuesday preview shows did begin as early as 3PM. The film is playing exclusively in theatres this weekend (in 2,803 locations beginning on Wednesday). BoxOfficeReport has predicted respective three-day weekend and five-day grosses of $6.8 million and $10.9 million for Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.

With this weekend's three new wide releases taking over a sizable amount of screens, holdovers in general may not hold up as well as usual for the Thanksgiving weekend holiday frame. Disney's Eternals could decline 35 percent to take in $7.2 million for the three-day weekend, while Paramount's Clifford the Big Red Dog could decrease 27 percent to gross $5.9 million and Warner's King Richard could slow 39 percent to gross $3.3 million.

Also of note this holiday weekend are Focus' Belfast, which will be expanding from 584 locations to 1,128 locations on Wednesday, and Freestyle Releasing's For the Love of Money which is opening in moderate release on Wednesday in 519 locations. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a three-day weekend of $1.3 million for Belfast and isn't making an official prediction for For the Love of Money.

Wednesday Morning Predictions Update:

Due to holiday time constraints, there isn't a traditional predictions article being included with this week's predictions chart. A box office update including Tuesday preview grosses for Wednesday's new films will appear instead later in the day today. Apologies for any inconvenience and Happy Thanksgiving.
