| As we continue to approach the end of this year's summer moviegoing season, Universal and MGM's Candyman will look to lead this weekend's box office upon arriving in theatres. The Nia DaCosta directed
horror sequel starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Teyonah Parris represents the fourth installment of the Candyman franchise and the first theatrical Candyman film since 1995's Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh.
Candyman was co-produced by Monkeypaw Productions, with Jordan Peele serving as both a producer and co-writer of the film. The combination of Peele's fanbase and fans of the original Candyman films should help propel the
modestly budgeted Candyman to a healthy start this weekend. Candyman should also receive a boost from its strong critical reviews, as well as from playing exclusively in theatres this weekend. The film will be playing in
3,569 locations this weekend and will also have Thursday preview shows beginning at 7PM. Fellow Universal release Old and Warner's The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It may be two of the better recent opening weekend
comparisons for Candyman, with those two films having opened respectively with $16.85 million and $24.10 million earlier this summer. Candyman could find itself opening between those two films and perhaps even approach the
debut of The Conjuring 3. BoxOfficeReport expects Candyman to debut in first place this weekend with $21.5 million (which would give the film a per-location average of $6,024 for the frame). |
| After exceeding expectations each of the past two weekends, Disney and 20th Century's Free Guy will look to continue to hold up very well this weekend. Last weekend Free Guy declined just 35 percent
to gross $18.50 million; which represented this summer's best second weekend percentage hold for a major release. In addition to continuing to benefit from good critical reviews and very strong word of mouth, Free Guy will also
be helped out this weekend by continuing to hold onto a high percentage of its average showtimes per-location and by having IMAX screens to itself this weekend
(after sharing them with The Suicide Squad and then Reminiscence over the past two weeks). Free Guy and the marketplace in general could also receive a bit of a boost this weekend from moviegoers looking to catch up on
films before Disney's anticipated Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings arrives in theatres next weekend on September 3. Look for Free Guy to decrease 30 percent this weekend to place in second with $13.0 million. |
| Last weekend Paramount's PAW Patrol: The Movie opened in line with expectations with a solid second place debut of $13.15 million. Typically theatrical versions of animated television series experience
sizable second weekend percentage declines due to built-in fanbases rushing out on opening weekend and it's likely that PAW Patrol: The Movie will follow that trend this weekend, before potentially stabilizing after this weekend.
Good critical reviews and good word of mouth (PAW Patrol: The Movie received an A- rating on CinemaScore) could help PAW Patrol: The Movie avoid experiencing an especially sharp decline this weekend. A 51 percent decrease
from last weekend would transfer into a $6.5 million third place take for PAW Patrol: The Movie this weekend. |
| Disney's Jungle Cruise should hold up well again this weekend after coming off of a 30 percent decline last weekend when the film grossed $6.35 million to remain in third. With the continued aid of strong
word of mouth and another strong average showtimes per-location hold this weekend, Jungle Cruise could decrease a slim 29 percent and one spot form last weekend to land in fourth this weekend with $4.5 million. That would bring
Jungle Cruise to the verge of the $100 million domestic mark. |
| As for some of this weekend's other holdovers, look for Sony's Don't Breathe 2 to decline 49 percent to take fifth with $2.6 million, Warner's The Suicide Squad to decrease 41 percent to claim sixth
with $2.0 million and for United Artists Releasing's Respect to also decline 49 percent to place in seventh with $1.9 million. Don't Breathe 2 and Respect should both take direct hits from the added presence of
Candyman in the marketplace this weekend. |
| Also arriving in theatres this weekend is Pantelion's Un Rescate de Huevitos. The Spanish-language computer animated film is the follow-up to 2015's Un Gallo con Muchos Huevos. Back in
early September of 2015, Un Gallo con Muchos Huevos started out with $3.42 million during its first three days from just 395 locations. Given the current theatrical environment and that Un Rescate de Huevitos is opening in
320 locations this weekend, it will be hard pressed to match its predecessor, but the film should still have a presence at the box office this weekend, especially when it comes to per-location averages. Un Rescate de Huevitos could
debut with $1.35 million this weekend (for a per-location average of $4,219). |
| In their respective second weekends of release, Lionsgate's The Protégé and Disney and Searchlight's The Night House could find themselves in the same neighborhood as Un Rescate de Huevitos this
weekend. A 48 percent decrease would give The Protégé $1.45 million this weekend, while a 51 percent decline would transfer into $1.40 million for The Night House. |
| In other news, Bleecker Street will release Together in 251 locations this weekend. The Stephen Daldry directed film stars James McAvoy and Sharon Horgan. On the average, critical reviews for
Together have been rather average thus far. BoxOfficeReport isn't making an official prediction for Together this weekend. |
