Warner's Wonder Woman 1984 will look to lead the box office for a third consecutive frame this weekend. After a stronger than expected start two weeks ago, last weekend Wonder Woman 1984 lost major momentum, as Monday's updated global totals for the film had Wonder Woman 1984 declining 68 percent to gross an estimated $5.4 million in its second weekend domestically. Critical reviews and word of mouth for Wonder Woman 1984 both being weaker than they were for 2017's Wonder Woman looks to be taking a significant toll on Wonder Woman 1984 and it also appears that the film being available on HBO Max is taking a bigger toll on Wonder Woman 1984 after opening weekend than it did on opening weekend. Making it difficult for Wonder Woman 1984 to stabilize this weekend is that the film will see its showtimes per location average decrease significantly at many theatres. Historically, films that perform well throughout the holidays also tend to experience significant declines the weekend after New Year's weekend, though no new wide releases entering the marketplace this weekend should help holdovers have better than usual holds for the timeframe in question. A 50 percent decline would give Wonder Women 1984 a third weekend gross of $2.70 million.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation's The Croods: A New Age is likely to remain in second place this weekend. Last weekend The Croods: A New Age was up a strong 27 percent to take in $2.22 million. Family films typically experience sharp declines the weekend after New Year's weekend, but that may not be the case for The Croods: A New Age this weekend given just how well the film has been holding up over the past few weeks, the degree to which the film will be maintaining showtimes at many theatres this weekend and that the film won't be facing any new competition for family audiences for quite some time. The Croods: A New Age could take in $1.45 million this weekend, which would represent a very solid 35 percent decline.

After declining a very solid (but not great) 25 percent last weekend to take in $1.69 million, Universal's News of the World will look to continue to stabilize in its third weekend. Given the film's midweek holds this week, News of the World will likely have another solid hold this weekend, but may also not hold up quite as well as some other holdovers in the marketplace this weekend, especially since News of the World is likely to take a bigger hit from this weekend's NFL playoffs games than other films. News of the World could decline 38 percent this weekend to gross $1.05 million for the frame.

Sony's Monster Hunter will look to continue to hold up well after last weekend's surprisingly strong hold when the film increased 15 percent to take in $1.26 million. Monster Hunter is likely getting a current boost from moviegoers who have already caught Wonder Woman 1984 and was actually ahead of News in the World in the daily rankings this week on both Monday and Wednesday. A decline of just 29 percent this weekend would transfer into $0.90 million for Monster Hunter.

Lionsgate's Fatale and Focus' Promising Young Woman (with respective weekend grosses of $0.70 million and $0.69 million) were close to one another for a second consecutive frame last weekend. Both films are likely to continue to hold up well this weekend to remain close to another for a third consecutive frame. A 29 percent decline would place Fatale in fifth this weekend with $0.50 million, while a similar 30 percent decrease would place Promising Young Woman in sixth with $0.48 million.
