Weekend Estimates Update:
|
MGM's Creed III surged past expectations this weekend with a strong first place debut of $58.66 million. Heading into the weekend, the third installment of the Creed series had been widely expected
to open in the high-thirty millions to mid-forty millions range. Creed III was directed by and stars Michael B. Jordan and also stars Tessa Thompson and Jonathan Majors. Unlike the first two Creed films, Creed III doesn't
feature Sylvester Stallone, but that clearly didn't have a negative impact on Creed III at the box office this weekend. Creed III not only opened higher than the respective $29.63 million and $35.57 million three-day opening weekends
of 2015's Creed and 2018's Creed II, but in just three days also opened higher than the respective $42.12 million and $56.01 million five-day holiday starts of Creed and Creed II. Creed III also registered the
largest unadjusted opening weekend ever for a sports film; topping the $55.67 million start of the 2010 version of The Karate Kid.
|
Creed III started out with $22.19 million on Friday (including an estimated $5.45 million in preview shows from Monday, Wednesday and Thursday), declined a slim 3.3 percent on Saturday to gross
$21.45 million (which represented a very strong first-Saturday hold when factoring in the preview grosses from Friday's figure) and is estimated to decrease 30.0 percent on Sunday to gross $15.02 million. The audience breakdown for
Creed III skewed 63 percent male and 37 percent female. Creed III had strong appeal with African American and Hispanic American audiences, as African Americans represented an estimated 36 percent of the film's audience and
Hispanic Americans represented an estimated 28 percent of the film's audience. Creed III looks to have received a boost from its strong critical reviews and Creed III also looks to be going over well with audiences given
the film's healthy A- rating on CinemaScore and mentioned strong first-Saturday hold. Creed III also received an added boost from playing on IMAX screens, as the film grossed an estimated $6.5 million from domestic IMAX screens
this weekend (which represented 11.1 percent of this weekend's overall domestic gross).
|
Internationally, Creed III is being released by Warner Bros. and grossed an estimated $41.8 million this weekend from 75 international markets. That places the film's global launch at $100.4 million. International debuts
by market for Creed III this weekend included $7.7 million in France, $6.1 million in the United Kingdom, $4.3 million in Germany, $3.5 million in Italy, $3.0 million in Mexico, $2.2 million in Australia, $2.0 million in Spain,
$1.2 million in the Netherlands, $1.2 million in Switzerland, $1.1 million in Brazil and $1.0 million in Belgium. Creed III grossed an estimated $3.1 million from international IMAX screens this weekend, which places the film's
global IMAX total for the weekend at $9.6 million.
|
Disney's Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania placed in second this weekend with an estimated $12.47 million. After last weekend's very sharp second weekend percentage decline,
Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania was unable to stabilize this weekend as the superhero sequel decreased a sharp 61.0 percent. In addition to experiencing the continued negative impact of mixed critical reviews and weaker than
usual word of mouth for an MCU film, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania also took a hit this weekend from losing its IMAX screens to Creed III. With a 17-day take of $186.80 million, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania is
running 13.2 percent ahead of the $165.01 million 17-day gross of 2018's Ant-Man and The Wasp, but the percentage gap between the two films will continue to shrink given that Ant-Man and The Wasp declined 43.3 percent in its
third weekend to gross $16.51 million.
|
This weekend did see Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania pass the $400 million global mark. The film grossed an estimated $22.0 million internationally this weekend from 52 international markets. Respective
totals for Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania stand at $232.7 million internationally and at $419.5 million globally. Estimated international totals for Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania by market through Sunday include
$36.9 million in China, $20.7 million in the United Kingdom, $16.3 million in Mexico, $12.3 million in South Korea, $11.2 million in France, $9.5 million in Brazil, $9.4 million in Australia, $9.1 million in Germany, $7.8 million in Indonesia,
$6.5 million in Japan, $6.0 million in Italy and $6.0 million in India.
|
Universal's Cocaine Bear placed in third with an estimated $11.02 million. That represented a sizable, bur very reasonable second weekend decline of 52.6 percent. Cocaine Bear continues to exceed expectations
with a stronger than expected $41.29 million domestically through ten days of release. That is an impressive 54.5 percent higher than the $26.72 million ten-day start of fellow Universal release Violent Night this past December
(which declined 35.1 percent in its second weekend to gross $8.72 million). Internationally, Cocaine Bear grossed an estimated $3.13 million this weekend from 51 international markets. That brings the film's international total to
$10.7 million and current global haul to $52.0 million. The international performance of Cocaine Bear thus far continues to be driven by the United Kingdom and Australia, where the film has grossed $4.32 million and $1.95 million to date respectively.
|
Crunchyroll and Aniplex's Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - To the Swordsmith Village started out in fourth place this weekend with an estimated $10.12 million. That was well below the $21.23 million launch of
Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train back in April of 2021. However, Demon Slayer: To the Swordsmith Village wasn't expected to match the box office heights of Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train, due in part to being a fairly
last-minute release and in part from being a collection of three episodes of the Demon Slayer anime series. Unlike Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train and most other anime films from Crunchyroll (and previously Funimation),
Demon Slayer: To the Swordsmith Village also didn't have the benefit of Thursday preview shows. Demon Slayer: To the Swordsmith Village was able to open just ahead of the $9.34 million start of One Piece Film Red this past November.
Demon Slayer: To the Swordsmith Village started out with $4.22 million on Friday, declined 18.3 percent on Saturday to take in $3.45 million and is estimated to decrease 28.9 percent on Sunday to gross $2.45 million.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - To the Swordsmith Village looks to be going over fairly well with audiences, as the film received a solid B+ rating on CinemaScore.
|
Lionsgate's Jesus Revolution rounded out this weekend's top five with an estimated $8.65 million. On the heels of last weekend's stronger than expected start, Jesus Revolution declined 45.5 percent
this weekend. That represented a very solid second weekend hold, especially since the opening weekend performance of Jesus Revolution was significantly inflated by very strong early access Wednesday screenings. Jesus Revolution continues to exceed
expectations with a ten-day domestic start of $30.54 million. With the film's second weekend now behind it, and the continued aid of very strong word of mouth from faith-based audiences and the continued lead-up to the Easter holiday, Jesus Revolution is
highly likely to stabilize even further next weekend.
|
Further down on this weekend's box office chart, Disney and 20th Century's Avatar: The Way of Water declined just 26.4 percent to place in sixth with $3.58 million, Lionsgate's Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre debuted in seventh with a modest, but largely expected
$3.16 million and Universal and DreamWorks Animation's Puss in Boots: The Last Wish decreased a solid 34.0 percent to take eighth place with an estimated $2.72 million. To date, Avatar: The Way of Water has grossed $670.63 million through 80 days of domestic release
(giving the film a current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 5.00 to 1), while Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has grossed $177.13 million domestically through 75 days (for a current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 14.25 to 1).
|
Internationally, Avatar: The Way of Water grossed an estimated $6.1 million this weekend from 52 international markets. That brings the film's international total to $1.611 billion and current global haul
to $2.282 billion. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish grossed an estimated $4.7 million internationally this weekend from 80 international markets. Respective totals for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish stand at $276.4 million internationally and at $453.6 million globally.
