Weekend Actuals Update:

Disney's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness continued to inch up a bit further with actuals, as the film officially debuted with $187.421 million this weekend.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation's The Bad Guys came in a bit under its weekend estimate with a second place take of $9.574 million, while Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog 2 also finished a bit under its studio estimate with a third place gross of $6.020 million.

Other weekend actuals for the frame include: Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore ($4.264 million), Everything Everywhere All At Once ($3.528 million), The Northman ($2.864 million), The Lost City ($2.764 million), The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent ($1.586 million), Memory ($1.386 million), Father Stu ($0.875 million) and Morbius ($0.630 million).

Monday Morning Update:

The updated opening weekend studio estimate for Disney's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is $187.0 million. That keeps the film in eleventh place on the all-time domestic opening weekend list.

Weekend Estimates Update:

Disney's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness kicked off the summer moviegoing season this weekend with an estimated first place debut of $185.00 million. The Sam Raimi directed superhero film starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen opened towards the lower end of its massive pre-release expectations. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness delivered the second largest opening weekend since the re-opening of domestic theatres (behind only last year's Spider-Man: No Way Home), the largest opening weekend of 2022 thus far, the third largest opening weekend ever for the month of May, the seventh largest debut ever for a film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the eleventh largest unadjuated opening weekend of all-time. Furthermore, Disney now claims 14 of the 16 highest grossing opening weekend performances of all-time; with one of the other two films being Sony's fellow-MCU film Spider-Man: No Way Home. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness opened 117.5 percent ahead of the $85.06 million debut of 2016's Doctor Strange and is already quickly approaching the $232.64 million final domestic gross of Doctor Strange. With that said, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was obviously positioned to play as a follow-up to Spider-Man: No Way Home. It should also be noted that unofficial industry estimates currently have Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness closer to the area of $190 million for the weekend.

This weekend's opening weekend performance for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness did end up being even more front-loaded than expected, as after starting out with $90.0 million on Friday (which included an estimated $36.0 million from Thursday preview shows that began at 3PM), the film declined a sizable 36 percent on Saturday to take in $57.5 million and is estimated to decrease 35 percent on Sunday to gross $37.5 million. The film's estimated opening weekend to previews ratio of 5.14 to 1 and estimated opening weekend to opening day ratio of 2.06 to 1 are both concerning early signs when it comes to the film's holding power beyond this weekend. On the average, critical reviews for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have been good, but not great, and the film looks to be going over similarly with audiences after receiving a B+ rating on CinemaScore, which while still solid, is historically one of the lower scores for a film in the MCU. The film's horror elements and massive amount of showtimes this weekend (due in part to the film's 126-minute run-time) are other factors that are likely contributing to the initial front-loading. The audience breakdown for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness skewed 62 percent male, 38 percent female, 57 percent over 25 and 43 percent under 25. Family audiences made up just an estimated 12 percent of the film's overall audience this weekend.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness grossed an estimated $18.0 million from domestic IMAX screens this weekend. That represented 9.7 percent of the film's overall domestic gross this weekend. Premium format screens of all types (including IMAX) were responsible for an estimated 36 percent of this weekend's overall domestic gross.

Internationally, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was also off to an impressive international debut with an estimated $265.0 million from 49 international markets. That places the film's global launch at an estimated $450.0 million. Estimated debuts for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness this weekend included $30.0 million in South Korea, $24.7 million in the United Kingdom, $21.5 million in Mexico, $16.3 million in Brazil, $12.7 million in India, $12.6 million in Australia, $12.0 million in Germany, $11.0 million in France, $9.4 million in Japan, $9.0 million in Italy and $7.8 million in Indonesia. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness grossed an estimated $15.0 million from international IMAX screens this weekend, which places the film's global IMAX launch at $33.0 million.

After leading the domestic box office each of the past two weekends, Universal and DreamWorks Animation's The Bad Guys placed in a very distant second this weekend with an estimated $9.77 million. The Bad Guys was down 40 percent this weekend, which was a solid hold, especially with the added presence of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in the marketplace this weekend. The Bad Guys continues to exceed expectations with $57.57 million through 17 days. That already places The Bad Guys just ahead of the $57.30 million final domestic gross of last year's The Boss Baby: Family Business. Look for The Bad Guys to re-stabilize next weekend, especially with no new family films entering the marketplace. Internationally, The Bad Guys grossed an estimated $7.2 million internationally this weekend from 64 international markets. This weekend's international performance was led by a $2.7 million second weekend performance in China (where the film has grossed $14.3 million to date) and a $1.9 million debut in South Korea. Respective totals for The Bad Guys through Sunday stand at $90.6 million internationally and $148.1 million globally.

Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was down one spot and a sizable 46 percent from last weekend to place in third with an estimated $6.20 million. The 31-day domestic total for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 stands at $169.90 million, which is 14 percent ahead of the $148.97 million final domestic gross of 2020's Sonic the Hedgehog and ranks Sonic the Hedgehog 2 as the third highest grossing release of 2022 thus far domestically. Internationally, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has grossed an estimated $8.2 million this weekend from 61 international markets. That brings respective totals for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 through Sunday to $179.5 million internationally and $349.4 million globally.

Warner's Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore declined one spot and a sharp 52.5 percent from last weekend to take fourth place with an estimated $3.95 million. The 24-day domestic total for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore stands at a lackluster $86.01 million. Fortunately, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore continues to perform significantly stronger internationally, as the film grossed an estimated $10.8 million internationally this weekend from 74 international markets. Respective totals through Sunday for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore stand at $277.7 million internationally and $363.8 million globally.

A24's Everything Everywhere All At Once held steady in fifth place with an estimated $3.32 million. Everything Everywhere All At Once was down a solid 40 percent from last weekend, but the hold was stronger than it looks when factoring in that last weekend's performance was inflated by the film playing on select IMAX (and other PLF) screens (which were lost to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness this weekend) and that Everything Everywhere All At Once was playing in 671 fewer locations this weekend than last weekend. With a healthy 45-day gross of $41.57 million, Everything Everywhere All At Once remains the fourth highest grossing film ever for A24 domestically.

Estimated grosses for other holdovers in the marketplace this weekend included a sixth place take of $2.77 million for Focus's The Northman and a seventh place gross of $2.50 million for The Lost City. The new competition from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness clearly took a toll on The Northman, as the film declined a sharp 56.5 percent this weekend. Thanks in part to Mother's Day weekend, The Lost City held up significantly better by declining a very solid 34.5 percent from last weekend. Respective total domestic grosses stand at a strong $94.39 million for The Lost City through 45 days and at a modest $28.05 million for The Northman through 17 days.

In international box office news, Universal / Focus' Downton Abbey: A New Era grossed an estimated $6.6 million this weekend from 42 international markets. That brings the film's international total to $22.3 million. International totals for Downton Abbey: A New Era through Sunday include $9.8 million in the United Kingdom (where the film grossed $2.1 million this weekend), $3.0 million in Australia, $2.0 million in France, $1.5 million in Germany and $1.3 million in the Netherlands. Later this month on Friday, May 20, Downton Abbey: A New Era will open domestically and in China.
