Weekend Actuals Update:

With actuals, Warner's Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore finished lower than its studio estimate with a first place debut of $42.151 million.

Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog 2 also came in under its weekend estimate with a second place take of $29.304 million.

Other weekend actuals for the frame include: The Lost City ($6.223 million), Father Stu ($5.403 million 3-day / $7.730 million 5-day), Morbius ($4.730 million), Ambulance ($4.067 million), The Batman ($3.768 million) and Uncharted ($1.191 million).

Weekend Estimates Update:

Warner's Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore debuted in first place over Easter weekend with an estimated $43.00 million. The third installment of the Fantastic Beasts film series was directed by David Yates and stars Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, Ezra Miller and Mads Mikkelsen. While Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore delivered the lowest opening weekend ever for a film within the Wizarding World universe, that came as no surprise as The Secrets of Dumbledore had been widely expected to open somewhere in the $40-millions this weekend. The opening weekend performance of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore was down a significant 30.8 percent from the $62.16 million opening of 2018's Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (which was already down 16.5 percent from the $74.40 million debut of 2016's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them). Pre-release anticipation (and in turn expectations) for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore was negatively impacted by a number of factors, including the overall mixed reception to The Crimes of Grindelwald, the replacement of Johnny Depp with Mikkelsen, J. K. Rowling having alienated some of the Wizarding World fanbase and natural franchise fatigue for Fantastic Beasts / Wizarding World in general.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore grossed an estimated $20.00 million on Friday (which included an estimated $6.0 million from Thursday preview shows that began early at 2PM), declined a sharp 30.5 percent on Saturday to take in $13.90 million and is estimated to decrease 34.5 percent on Easter Sunday to gross $9.10 million. While Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore had an estimated opening weekend to Friday ratio of just 2.15 to 1, it's commonplace for high-profile Easter weekend openers to be especially front-loaded towards Friday. On the average, critical reviews for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore have been mixed, slightly more negative than positive. The film looks to be going over a bit better with audiences, as Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore received a solid B+ rating on CinemaScore (the same rating received by Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald). The audience breakdown for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore skewed 56 percent female, 44 percent male, a significant 67 percent over 25 and 33 percent under 25. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore grossed an estimated $4.3 million from domestic IMAX screens, which represented 10 percent of the film's overall domestic performance. All premium formats (including IMAX) made up an estimated 32 percent of this weekend's overall domestic performance.

As is commonplace for Wizarding World films, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore has been more impressive internationally than it has been domestically. The film grossed an estimated $71.7 million internationally this weekend from 66 international markets. That brings the film's international total to $150.4 million and current global haul to $193.4 million. International debuts for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore this weekend included $7.1 million in France, $7.1 million in Mexico (with the film delivering the largest opening for a Fantastic Beasts film in the market), $4.7 million in Brazil, $4.1 million in South Korea and $4.0 million in Italy. Additional international totals for the film through Sunday include $17.1 million in Germany, $16.9 million in Japan, $16.7 million in the United Kingdom, $14.7 million in China, $8.0 million in Australia, $6.0 million in Spain and $4.0 million in the Netherlands. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore grossed an estimated $3.8 million from international IMAX screens this weekend, which brings the film's international IMAX total to $9.2 million and current global IMAX total to $13.5 million.

Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog 2 placed in second this weekend with an estimated $30.00 million. That represented a sharp 58 percent decline from last weekend's stronger than expected debut, but wasn't terribly surprising given that 2020's Sonic the Hedgehog decreased 55 percent in its second weekend (to gross $26.19 million). With this weekend's release of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 also had to deal with a larger opener in its second weekend than Sonic the Hedgehog had to deal with (The Call of the Wild, which opened with $24.79 million). And while it hasn't played on IMAX screens, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 did lose most of its non-IMAX PLF screens to The Secrets of Dumbledore this weekend.

In the bigger picture, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 zoomed past the $100 million domestic mark this weekend and has grossed $119.61 million through ten days. That places Sonic the Hedgehog 2 12 percent ahead of the $106.49 million ten-day take of Sonic the Hedgehog. Going forward, that percentage gap should increase further, due in part to holds for Sonic the Hedgehog later in its run having been hampered by the onset of COVID-19 in North America. Internationally, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 grossed an estimated $25.0 million this weekend from 54 international markets. That brings current respective totals for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to $112.2 million internationally and $231.8 million globally. International totals for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 through Sunday include $21.6 million in the United Kingdom, $12.7 million in Mexico, $11.4 million in France, $9.2 million in Australia, $6.6 million in Brazil and $5.6 million in Spain.

Fellow Paramount release The Lost City held steady in third place this weekend with an estimated $6.50 million. That represented a decline of just 28 percent from last weekend, which is even more impressive than it appears given the audience demo overlap between The Lost City and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. The Lost City has grossed a very solid $78.58 million through 24 days and is likely to continue to hold up well for at least the next couple weeks. The Lost City opened in additional international markets this weekend, which led to an estimated $10.0 million international take for the film this weekend from 33 markets. International debuts for The Lost City this weekend included $3.5 million in the United Kingdom, $3.3 million in Australia and $1.1 million in Spain. Through Sunday, respective totals for The Lost City stand at $20.4 million internationally and $99.0 million globally.

A24's Everything Everywhere All At Once continued to impress this weekend with an estimated fourth place take of $6.19 million. The critically acclaimed film was up 2 percent and two spots from last weekend's performance. In addition to continuing to benefit from exceptional critical reviews and very strong word of mouth, Everything Everywhere All At Once also expanded to an additional 970 locations this weekend (for a total location count of 2,220 for the frame). With a 24-day total of $17.70 million, Everything Everywhere All At Once is having the most impressive run of a live-action specialty market release since the re-opening of domestic theatres. Everything Everywhere All At Once is running 62 percent ahead of the $10.92 million 24-day take of 2015's Ex Machina (though that fellow A24 release expanded into traditional wide release in its fifth weekend instead of its fourth weekend).

Sony's Father Stu debuted in fifth place over the three-day weekend with an estimated $5.70 million. Over its first five days since being released on Wednesday (including Tuesday previews), the Rosalind Ross directed drama starring Mark Wahlberg, Jacki Weaver and Mel Gibson has grossed an estimated $8.03 million. That was in line with the modest consensus expectations for Father Stu, which has been aimed at faith-based audiences. Critical reviews for Father Stu have been mixed (more so negative than positive), but the film's potential among its target audience may have been limited more by its R rating. As is commonplace for films aimed at faith-based audiences, Father Stu looks to be going over far better with audiences than it has with critics, as the film currently has a 95 percent Verified Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film's estimated five-day to three-day weekend ratio of 1.41 to 1 is also an encouraging early sign going forward, especially given that Father Stu fell a surprisingly sharp 50 percent on Thursday before rebounding over the weekend (relatively speaking).

As for some of this weekend's other holdovers, Sony's Morbius, while stabilizing somewhat, still declined a sharp 54 percent to claim sixth with an estimated $4.70 million, Universal's Ambulance also declined 54 percent (due in part to losing its IMAX screens to Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore) to follow in seventh with an estimated $4.04 million and Warner's The Batman was down a solid 41 percent to place in eighth with an estimated $3.80 million. Respective total domestic grosses stand at an impressive $365.04 million for The Batman though 45 days, at a lackluster $65.12 million for Morbius through 17 days and at just $15.65 million for Ambulance through 10 days. Respective international and global totals stand at $386.1 million internationally and $751.1 million globally for The Batman, at $81.3 million internationally and $146.4 million globally for Morbius and at $24.8 million internationally and $40.5 million globally for Ambulance.

Also of note this weekend is Hombale Films' K.G.F: Chapter 2, which was released in multiple languages to a combined estimate of $2.88 million for the weekend (in moderate / semi-wide release), to place in ninth. With the addition of Thursday's opening day performance (which also included Wednesday preview shows), K.G.F: Chapter 2 has grossed an estimated $4.60 million to date domestically. Sarigama Cinemas (which had recent success with RRR) handled domestic distribution of K.G.F.: Chapter 2 in South Indian languages, while domestic distribution of the film in Hindi was handled by Cinestaan Film Company and AA Films. K.G.F: Chapter 2 was directed by Prashanth Neel and stars Yash and Sanjay Dutt.
