Weekend Actuals Update:

With actuals, Universal's Halloween Kills came in under its weekend estimate with a still impressive first place debut of $49.405 million.

United Artists Releasing and MGM's No Time To Die finished a bit below its studio estimate with a second place gross of $23.792 million, while Sony's Venom: Let There Be Carnage essentially finished on par with its weekend estimate with a third place take of $16.501 million.

Other weekend actuals for the frame include: The Addams Family 2 ($7.065 million), The Last Duel ($4.759 million), Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ($3.322 million), Free Guy ($645,712), Candyman ($441,500), Dear Evan Hansen ($380,625), The Many Saints of Newark ($171,004 from 502 locations) and Jungle Cruise ($109,118).

Weekend Estimates Update:

The October box office continued to excel this weekend thanks to the release of Universal's Halloween Kills, which debuted in first place with an estimated $50.35 million. The follow-up to 2018's Halloween, once again directed by David Gordon Green and starring Jamie Lee Curtis, exceeded pre-release expectations and was also off to a very nice start with its modest production budget in mind. Halloween Kills was able to outpace the $47.55 million 3-day start of A Quiet Place Part II to deliver the largest opening weekend for a horror film since the re-opening of domestic theatres. Halloween Kills also registered the largest opening weekend for an R-rated film since re-opening and the largest opening weekend for a SVOD (non-PVOD) day-and-date release (in addition to opening theatrically, Halloween Kills is available via streaming on Peacock). Making this weekend's start for Halloween Kills even more impressive was that the film didn't receive as many showtimes per location on the average as all of the year's other films to open with at least $40 million and also didn't have the advantage of playing on higher priced IMAX screens. Halloween Kills did open 34 percent below the $76.22 million start of 2018's Halloween, but hadn't been expected to open anywhere near the opening of that film. That represented a better hold than the 38 percent the opening weekend of 2009's Halloween II fell from the opening weekend of its processor (2007's Halloween).

Halloween Kills started out with $22.84 million on Friday (which included an estimated $4.85 million from Thursday shows that began at 7PM), declined 25 percent on Saturday to take in $17.19 million and is estimated to decrease 40 percent on Sunday to gross $10.32 million. Interestingly, the opening day performance of Halloween Kills wasn't as front-loaded towards the Thursday night portion as that of Halloween was, but at the same time for the entire weekend Halloween Kills was still more front-loaded towards Friday than Halloween was. That could be an early indication of Halloween Kills being more front-loaded towards opening weekend than Halloween was back in 2018, which would make sense as a sequel with poorer critical reviews than its predecessor and with Warner's highly anticipated Dune opening day-and-date next weekend, theatrically and via streaming on HBO Max. While Halloween Kills also doesn't look to be going over with audiences as well as its predecessor did; Halloween Kills received a B- rating on CinemaScore in comparison to the B+ rating received by Halloween (2018), the film's CinemaScore rating still suggests that Halloween Kills is going over better with audiences than it has with critics. The audience breakdown for Halloween Kills skewed 52 percent male, 48 percent female, 56 percent over the age of 25 and 44 percent under the age of 25 (which is a significant under-25 audience for an R-rated film).

Internationally, Halloween Kills started out with an estimated $5.5 million this weekend from 20 markets. That places the film's current global total at $55.9 million. Estimated debuts for Halloween Kills this weekend included $2.3 million in the United Kingdom, $1.3 million in Mexico, $0.45 million in Brazil and $0.34 million in Sweden. Halloween Kills will open in additional international markets in the coming week, including France on Wednesday (October 20), Germany, Italy and Russia on Thursday (October 21) and Spain on Friday (October 22).

United Artists Releasing and MGM's No Time To Die was down one spot from last weekend to place in second with an estimated $24.30 million. While that was a sharp 56 percent decline, it also represented a better second weekend hold than those of most other event films thus far in 2021. The film's second weekend performance (which represents the fourth largest second weekend gross since re-opening) is more impressive than it appears when factoring in that the showtimes per location average for No Time To Die this weekend was lower than those of many of this year's other top films during their respective second weekends of release, due in part to the 163 minute run-time of No Time To Die. No Time To Die continues to be aided by performing especially well on IMAX, as the film grossed an estimated $3.0 million from domestic IMAX screens this weekend (which represented 12.3 percent of this weekend's overall domestic gross). It should also be noted that No Time To Die had relatively strong midweek business this past week and as a result the film is on the verge of the $100 million domestic mark with a ten-day total of $99.51 million. The film's current $12.3 million domestic IMAX total represents 12.4 percent of the overall current domestic gross for No Time To Die. While word of mouth appears to be good for No Time To Die, the mentioned addition of Dune in the marketplace next weekend should have a big impact on No Time To Die (especially with No Time To Die losing its IMAX screens to Dune).

No Time To Die continued to be more impressive internationally than domestically this weekend with an estimated $54.0 million for the frame from 72 international markets. That brings the film's international total to $348.3 million and current global haul to a hefty $447.8 million. Before much longer, No Time To Die will surpass Godzilla vs. Kong to become the second highest grossing Hollywood release of 2021 so far globally (behind only F9). International totals for No Time To Die through Sunday (in markets being handled by Universal) include $92.9 million in the United Kingdom, $46.3 million in Germany, $17.3 million in France, $16.3 million in Japan, $12.1 million in the Netherlands, $8.9 million in Russia, $7.8 million in (German-Speaking) Switzerland, $7.4 million in Italy, $6.9 million in Spain and $6.0 million in Hong Kong. Respective IMAX totals for No Time To Die currently stand at $19.3 million internationally and $31.6 million globally. No Time To Die is scheduled to open in China on October 29.

Sony's Venom: Let There Be Carnage continued to have a significant presence at the box office with an estimated third place take of $16.50 million. After last weekend's very sharp second weekend decline, Venom: Let There Be Carnage was able to stabilize this weekend by declining a sizable, but respectable 48 percent. This weekend's performance for Venom: Let There Be Carnage represented the second largest third weekend gross of any film since re-opening (behind only Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings). With a 17-day total of $168.08 million, Venom: Let There Be Carnage is already the fourth highest grossing film domestically since re-opening and before too much longer the film will surpass both F9 and Black Widow to move into second place (behind only Shang-Chi, once again).

This weekend also saw Venom: Let There Be Carnage open throughout a large portion of the international marketplace, which led to the film grossing an estimated $62.3 million for the frame from 44 markets. Through Sunday, respective totals for Venom: Let There Be Carnage stand at $115.6 million internationally and $283.7 million globally. International debuts for Venom: Let There Be Carnage this weekend included $9.5 million in South Korea, $8.3 million in the United Kingdom, $3.9 million in Spain, $3.7 million in Italy, $2.8 million in Taiwan, $2.7 million in Ukraine, $2.3 million in Hong Kong, $2.1 million in India, $2.1 million in Saudi Arabia and $2.0 million in the United Arab Emirates. Additional current totals for Venom: Let There Be Carnage by market include $28.2 million in Russia, $16.8 million in Mexico and $7.2 million in Brazil. In the coming week Venom: Let There Be Carnage will open in France in Wednesday and in Germany on Thursday.

United Artists Releasing and MGM's The Addams Family 2 placed in fourth with an estimated $7.20 million. That represented a very healthy weekend hold, as the computer animated film was down just 29 percent from last weekend. The Addams Family 2 passed the $40 million mark this weekend and has grossed an estimated $42.27 million through 17 days of release. Next weekend will see The Addams Family 2 face new competition for family audiences with Disney's release of 20th Century's Ron's Gone Wrong. Internationally, The Addams Family 2 grossed an estimated $9.7 million this weekend from 21 markets being handled by Universal (the film is also being handled by MGM in other international markets). This weekend saw The Addams Family 2 debut with an estimated $3.9 million in Russia, $1.1 million in Mexico and $1.1 million in France. Through Sunday The Addams Family 2 has grossed an estimated $16.2 million from international markets being handled by Universal (also including $5.2 million in the United Kingdom and $2.6 million in Spain).

While there was lots of good news at the box office this weekend, there was also some bad news as Disney's release of 20th Century's The Last Duel resulted in a poor estimated fifth place start of just $4.82 million. Despite strong critical reviews, the pricey Ridley Scott directed historical drama starring Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Jodie Comer and Ben Affleck failed to even reach its already modest expectations heading into the weekend. The Last Duel also came in below the $6.79 million debut of The Green Knight (which was far less expensive than The Last Duel) back in July. Interest in The Last Duel had always been low to begin with and at the end of the day the film simply couldn't compete by opening the weekend after No Time To Die, the same weekend as Halloween Kills and the weekend before Dune. The audience breakdown for The Last Duel skewed 52 percent male, 48 percent female, 80 percent over the age of 25 and only 19 percent under the age of 25. With the film's solid B+ CinemaScore rating in mind, The Last Duel does look to be going over well with audiences who have seen the film. Somewhat surprisingly, The Last Duel was off to an even lower start internationally with an estimated $4.2 million from 37 markets. That places the film's global start at just $9.0 million. France was this weekend's top international market with an estimated start of $0.90 million. In the next week, The Last Duel will open in additional international markets, including Australia, India, New Zealand, South Korea and Ukraine.

Disney's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings claimed sixth with an estimated $3.54 million. That represented a slim 18 percent from last weekend and furthermore the film's per-location average this weekend was essentially on par with last weekend's per-location average. With a 45-day total of $218.07 million, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings continues to pad its status as the highest grossing film domestically since re-opening. Internationally, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings grossed an estimated $3.6 million this weekend from 46 markets (including a $1.0 million debut in Thailand. That brings the film's international total to $196.2 million and current global haul to $414.3 million.

In international news, Warner and Legendary's Dune continued its international run with an estimated $8.5 million from 36 markets. This weekend's international performance received a boost from the film's $1.8 million start in Japan and $0.32 million debut in Indonesia. Through Sunday, Dune has grossed an estimated $129.3 million internationally. Estimated totals by market for Dune through Sunday include $26.2 million in France, $20.2 million in Russia, $17.5 million in Germany, $8.6 million in Spain, $8.0 million in Italy, $5.0 million in Taiwan and $4.7 million in the Netherlands. Next weekend Dune will open in an additional 40 international markets (including Brazil, China, Mexico, South Korea and the United Kingdom) and domestically (day-and-date, as previously mentioned).
