Weekend Actuals Update:

With actuals, Disney's Black Widow came in slightly higher than its studio estimate with a debut of $80.366 million. That represents the largest opening weekend performance since the re-opening of domestic theatres.

Meanwhile, all three of Universal's films currently in wide release finished ahead of their respective weekend estimates: F9 ($11.437 million), The Boss Baby: Family Business ($8.876 million) and The Forever Purge ($7.144 million).

Other weekend actuals for the frame include: A Quiet Place Part II ($3.155 million), Cruella ($2.370 million), Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard ($1.631 million), Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway ($1.263 million), The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It ($655,324), In the Heights ($612,520) and Summer of Soul ($377,634).

Weekend Estimates Update:

As had been widely expected, Disney's Black Widow registered the largest opening weekend performance since the re-opening of domestic theatres after debuting in first place this weekend with an estimated $80.00 million. The previous opening weekend high-water mark since re-opening had been set just two weeks ago by Universal's F9 with $70.04 million. Black Widow ended up debuting towards the lower end of its lofty consensus expectations, which had tended to range anywhere from $75 million to $95 million heading into the weekend. Black Widow also opened 5.5 percent ahead of the $75.18 million pre-pandemic start of Ant-Man and The Wasp back in July of 2018 and registered the thirteenth largest July opening weekend of all-time; both feats further showcasing that the domestic box office is continuing to return closer and closer to pre-pandemic levels as time goes on. In another sign of the overall growing strength of the domestic box office, the opening weekend performance of Black Widow helped propel this weekend's combined domestic box office take past the $100 million mark, which represented the first time a single combined three-day weekend has totaled more than $100 million since re-opening.

The one concerning aspect for Black Widow this weekend was that the film was heavily front-loaded towards its opening day performance. After starting out with $39.5 million on Friday (which included an estimated $13.2 million from Thursday preview shows that began at 5PM), it appeared that Black Widow was on course for roughly $85 million to $90 million this weekend. But the film declined a surprisingly sharp 41 percent on Saturday to take in $23.3 million and is estimated to decrease 26 percent on Sunday to gross $17.2 million. Some of Saturday's larger than expected decline is likely due to the film having opened day-and-date via streaming on Disney+ this weekend as a Premier Access title (more on that in a bit). Black Widow, which was directed by Cate Shortland and stars Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour and Rachel Weisz, has received good critical reviews, though they haven't been on quite the same level as many other recent films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Black Widow looks to be going over similarly with audiences, as the film received an A- rating on CinemaScore, which is solid, but also not great by the lofty audience standards of the MCU. The film's 4.5 of 5 ComScore PostTrak rating and 92 percent Verified Audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes are both more promising.

The audience breakdown for Black Widow skewed 58 percent male, 42 percent female, 53 percent over the age of 25 and 47 percent under the age of 25. Family audiences made up an estimated 23 percent of the film's overall audience. Black Widow grossed an estimated $7.2 million from domestic IMAX screens, which represented 9 percent of this weekend's overall gross.

Internationally, Black Widow started out with an estimated $78.8 million this weekend from 46 markets. That places the film's global theatrical launch at $158.8 million. In addition to the film's theatrical start, Black Widow is also estimated to have earned $60 million globally this weekend via streaming as a Disney+ Premier Access title. When including the film's Premier Access figure for the weekend, the overall global start for Black Widow increases to $218.8 million. Clearly, Black Widow opening day-and-date took away some of the film's theatrical potential this weekend (a factor that previous summer tentpoles A Quiet Place Part II and F9 didn't have to deal with during their respective opening weekends). Estimated international theatrical debuts by market for Black Widow this weekend included $12.7 million in South Korea, $9.7 million in the United Kingdom, $6.9 million in France, $5.3 million in Australia, $4.8 million in Mexico, $3.9 million in Russia, $3.3 million in Japan, $3.2 million in Hong Kong, $2.5 million in Germany, $2.4 million in Brazil, $2.4 million in Italy and $2.2 million in Spain. Black Widow will open in three additional international markets next weekend, including Taiwan.

Black Widow grossed an estimated $4.8 million from international IMAX screens this weekend, which places the film's global IMAX launch at $12.0 million.

After leading the box office each of the past two weekends, Universal's F9 placed in second this weekend with an estimated $10.88 million. F9 was down a sizable 53 percent from last weekend, which was actually a very respectable hold given the new competition the film faced from Black Widow this weekend (and that F9 lost its IMAX screens to Black Widow as well this weekend). Some of this weekend's better than expected hold for F9 is likely a result of last weekend's three-day grosses in general being deflated a bit by Independence Day falling on a Sunday, but in addition F9 also looks to be stabilizing on its own as well. F9 has grossed an estimated $141.33 million through 17 days, which keeps F9 as the second highest grossing film since re-opening (behind only A Quiet Place Part II). F9 is currently running 5.6 percent ahead of the $133.78 million 17-day pre-pandemic take of 2019's Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw, though that lead will continue to shrink going forward.

F9 passed the $400 million international mark after grossing an estimated $13.6 million internationally this weekend from 51 markets. Through Sunday, respective totals for F9 stand at $400.5 million internationally and $541.8 million globally. F9 remains the highest grossing Hollywood film globally since re-opening. This weekend F9 debuted with $3.1 million in the Netherlands. In the coming week, F9 will open in France on Wednesday (July 14) and in Germany on Thursday (July 15).

Universal and DreamWorks Animation's The Boss Baby: Family Business was down one spot from last weekend to take third place this weekend with an estimated $8.70 million. That represented a respectable 46 percent decline from last weekend's three-day start. The ten-day total for The Boss Baby: Family Business stands at $34.75 million. That is an impressive 52 percent ahead of the $22.85 million grossed by Tom & Jerry during its first ten days of release earlier this year. The Boss Baby: Family Business will have to deal with new competition for family audiences next weekend with the release of Warner's Space Jam: A New Legacy, which will be opening day-and-date theatrically and via streaming on HBO Max this coming Friday (July 16). However, after next weekend The Boss Baby: Family Business (and Space Jam: A New Legacy) won't have to deal with another animated film entering the marketplace until Paramount's Paw Patrol: The Movie does so on August 20.

Fellow Universal release The Forever Purge was down one place from last weekend to claim fourth with an estimated $6.71 million. The Forever Purge was down 46.5 percent from last weekend, which represents a very good second weekend hold for a film from the typically front-loaded The Purge franchise. In addition to benefiting from solid word of mouth and last weekend's three-day grosses being somewhat deflated by Independence Day falling on Sunday, The Forever Purge also benefited this weekend from a strong showtimes per location hold, which was a result of last weekend's start being relatively solid with the film's fairly modest showtimes per location average in mind. The ten-day start for The Forever Purge stands at $27.44 million, as the film has already zoomed past the $23.22 million final domestic gross of the recent Spiral. The direct competition for The Forever Purge will get even tougher each of the next two weeks with the release of Sony's Escape Room: Tournament of Champions this coming Friday and Universal's Old the following Friday (July 23).

Internationally, The Forever Purge grossed an estimated $1.77 million this weekend from 28 markets. That brings the film's international total to $7.4 million and current global haul to $34.8 million. Mexico remains the highest grossing international market for The Forever Purge with a current total gross of $2.9 million. This coming week The Forever Purge will open in South Korea on Wednesday and in the United Kingdom and Spain on Friday.

In other box office news, Paramount's A Quiet Place Part II became the first film since re-opening to pass the $150 million domestic mark after taking fifth place with an estimated $3.00 million. A Quiet Place Part II continued to hold up very well this weekend, as the film declined just 27 percent. The estimated 45-day total for A Quiet Place Part II stands at $150.69 million, which gives the film an impressive current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 3.17 to 1. A Quiet Place Part II took in an estimated $3.0 million internationally this weekend. Respective totals for the film stand at $128.3 million internationally and $279.0 million globally.

Disney's Cruella held steady in sixth place this weekend with an estimated $2.20 million. Cruella declined a slim 8 percent from last weekend, thanks in part to double feature drive-in shows with Black Widow this weekend. Cruella passed the $80 million domestic mark this weekend and has grossed $80.77 million through 45 days (for a current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 3.76 to 1). Internationally Cruella added an estimated $3.7 million this weekend, which brings the film's international total to $136.1 million and current global haul to $216.9 million.

Further down on this weekend's chart, Lionsgate's Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard was down 46.5 percent to take seventh with an estimated $1.61 million, while Sony's Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway declined 43 percent to land in eighth with an estimated $1.25 million. Respective total grosses stand at $37.70 million for Peter Rabbit 2 through 31 days and at a fairly similar $35.01 million for Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard after 26 days. This weekend also saw Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway pass the $100 million international mark after grossing an estimated $4.8 million internationally for the frame. Through Sunday, respective total grosses for Peter Rabbit 2 stand at $101.7 million internationally and $139.4 million globally.

In platform release, Good Deed Entertainment's Summertime was off to a promising start with an estimated $20,200 from 2 locations (the Landmark Theatre in Los Angeles and Quad Cinema in New York City). That gave Summertime a healthy per-location average of $10,100 for the frame. Summertime was directed by Carlos López Estrada and has received solid critical reviews. Next weekend Summertime is scheduled to expand to over 25 markets throughout the United States on Friday, July 16.
