| Weekend Actuals Update: |
| With actuals, Lionsgate's Spiral finished just ahead of its weekend estimate with a first place debut of $8.750 million. |
| United Artists Releasing and MGM's Wrath of Man came in just under its studio estimate with $3.702 million, while today's updated studio estimate of $2.830 million for Warner's Those Who Wish Me Dead is
slightly ahead of yesterday's weekend estimate. |
| Other weekend actuals (and updated estimates for Warner Bros. releases) for the frame include: Raya and the Last Dragon ($1.702 million), Godzilla vs. Kong ($1.520 million),
Mortal Kombat ($1.320 million), Finding You ($916,322), Profile ($730,290), Here Today ($534,818), Nobody ($379,945), The Unholy ($372,043), Tom and Jerry ($345,000),
Separation ($331,391), Top Gun (re-issue) ($212,311) and The Croods: A New Age ($175,190). |
| Weekend Estimates Update: |
| As had been widely expected, Lionsgate's Spiral: From the Book of Saw debuted in first place this weekend; however, the film's estimated $8.73 million start was also significantly below consensus pre-release
expectations. It had been hoped that the audience for the Darren Lynn Bousman directed horror film (and ninth installment of the Saw franchise) would potentially expand somewhat beyond the target audience of the Saw franchise,
thanks to the added presence of Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson. But that ultimately doesn't look to have materialized, as even when taking into account the current post-pandemic theatrical environment, Spiral would have likely
performed much more in line with the previous three Saw films (as opposed to returning the franchise to its former glory) in a more typical situation. The film's front-loading towards Friday this weekend
(after opening with $3.75 million on Friday, Spiral had an estimated opening weekend to Friday ratio of just 2.33 to 1) also suggests that Spiral appealed mostly to the established Saw fanbase. Spiral was able
to open just ahead of the $8.31 million start of Wrath of Man last weekend and still registered the eighth largest three-day opening weekend of any film since the re-opening of domestic theatres. Spiral grossed an estimated
$1.0 million from domestic IMAX screens this weekend, which represented 11.5 percent of this weekend's overall gross. Critical reviews for Spiral have been mostly negative, but the film does look to be going over better with
audiences after receiving a B- rating on CinemaScore (which is solid for a horror film and in the same general B+ to C range as previous Saw films). With no new wide releases scheduled for next weekend, Spiral will likely
have a better than usual second weekend hold for a Saw film, but the film will be facing significant new competition for horror fans each of the following two weekends, with Paramount's A Quiet Place Part II opening on May 28
and Warner's The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It opening on June 4. |
| Internationally, Spiral grossed an estimated $3.3 million from 16 markets, for a global start of $12.0 million this weekend. International debuts for Spiral this weekend included $0.96 million in
Russia, $0.71 million in South Korea, $0.61 million in Australia and $0.33 million in Mexico. |
| After last weekend's solid first place start, United Artists Releasing and MGM's Wrath of Man was down one spot this weekend to claim second with an estimated $3.74 million. That was down a sharp 55 percent from
last weekend, but was also reasonable and expected given that Wrath of Man took a significant showtimes hit as a result of five new high-profile releases entering the marketplace this weekend and also lost its IMAX screens to
Spiral. The second weekend decline of Wrath of Man was very similar to the 56 percent Nobody declined during its second weekend back in early April (when that film had to deal with the opening weekend performance of Godzilla vs. Kong).
Nobody was able to stabilize starting the following weekend and Wrath of Man will hope to do the same next weekend, especially with no new wide releases entering the marketplace (as previously mentioned) and the continued
aid of good word of mouth. With a ten-day start of $14.60 million, Wrath of Man is running 24 percent ahead of the $11.80 million ten-day take of Nobody. |
| Warner and New Line's Those Who Wish Me Dead arrived in third place this weekend with a modest estimated start of $2.80 million. The Taylor Sheridan directed action-thriller starring Angelina Jolie opened
towards the lower end of already low expectations. Making this weekend's performance even more lackluster is that Those Who Wish Me Dead opened in 3,188 locations, which represented a new opening weekend high-water mark for any
film since the re-opening of domestic theatres and gave the film a per-location average of $878 for the frame. Like all of Warner's other most recent releases, Those Who Wish Me Dead opened day-and-date theatrically and via
streaming on HBO Max. Relatively speaking, HBO Max hasn't really seemed to impact Warner Bros. releases at the box office until second weekends, but that trend appears to have stopped with Those Who Wish Me Dead, as the film feels
like the type of film many moviegoers would be more willing to watch at home rather than venturing out to a theatre to catch it. On the average, critical reviews for Those Who Wish Me Dead have been good, but not great. The film
looks to be going over similarly with audiences after receiving a respectable B rating on CinemaScore. |
| Internationally, Those Who Wish Me Dead grossed an estimated $2.8 million from 33 markets. This weekend's performance included debuts of $0.98 million in Australia, $0.44 million in Saudi Arabia and
$0.41 million in Russia. To date, respective totals for Those Who Wish Me Dead stand at $4.3 million internationally and $7.1 million globally. |
| Somewhat surprisingly following sharp declines each of the previous two frames, Funimation and Aniplex's Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train held up very nicely this weekend to claim
fourth place with an estimated $1.80 million. That was down two spots and just 34 percent from last weekend. While higher profile anime films are typically very front-loaded, it appears that the combination of good word of mouth and
overall buzz from the film's breakout performance is starting to kick in for Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train as it gets further into its run. Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train has grossed an estimated $42.0 million
through 24 days, which is obviously exceptional for an anime film in the domestic marketplace. |
| Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon followed closely behind with an estimated $1.72 million, to claim fifth place for a fourth consecutive frame. Raya and the Last Dragon declined a slim 10.5 percent
from last weekend, which was especially impressive given that last weekend's performance was inflated by the Mother's Day holiday. Thanks to terrific holding power, the 73-day total for Raya and the Last Dragon stands at
$46.12 million (for a strong current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 5.43 to 1). Raya and the Last Dragon has now move passed the current $45.19 million domestic total of Warner's Tom & Jerry
(which opened one week earlier than Raya and the Last Dragon). Raya and the Last Dragon is currently the fifth highest grossing film domestically since the re-opening of theatres and will soon overtake Wonder Woman 1984
to move into fourth place (behind only Godzilla vs. Kong, Tenet and The Croods: A New Age). |
| Warner Bros. holdovers Godzilla vs. Kong and Mortal Kombat both held up better than expected this weekend, to claim sixth and seventh place with respective estimated grosses of $1.46 million for
Godzilla vs. Kong and $1.32 million for Mortal Kombat. Godzilla vs. Kong was down just 27 percent (which was a very strong hold given the showtimes per location hit the film took this weekend), while
Mortal Kombat finally showed some signs of stabilizing by declining a respectable 45 percent. Respective total domestic grosses stand at $95.01 million for Godzilla vs. Kong through 47 days and at $39.91 million for
Mortal Kombat through 24 days. Respective international totals stand at $332.1 million for Godzilla vs. Kong and at $36.8 million for Mortal Kombat, for respective global totals of $427.1 million for
Godzilla vs. Kong and $76.7 million for Mortal Kombat. |
| In other box office news, the weekend's other three new high-profile releases were all off to modest (and even less than expected) starts. |
| Roadside Attraction's Finding You was the highest grossing of the three films with an estimated eighth place start of $0.95 million. The Brian Baugh directed Finding You played in 1,312 locations for
a modest weekend per-location average of $727. |
| Meanwhile, unofficial estimates place Netflix's Army of the Dead in ninth place this weekend. The Zack Snyder directed action-horror film starring Dave Bautista is having a one-week run in moderate release
in Cinemark theatres and a few other smaller theatrical chains, before starting to stream on Netflix on May 21. While certainly not the only reason for the film not having performed a bit stronger this weekend, box office potential for
Army of the Dead was further limited from the film reportedly playing in only 430 locations this weekend (as opposed to the 600+ estimate that had been floating around heading into the weekend). Army of the Dead had the
weekend's second highest per-location average among films currently in either wide or moderate release (behind only Spiral). |
| Focus' Profile was the weekend's lowest grossing new film in wide or moderate release with an estimated tenth place start of $0.67 million. The Timur Bekmambetov directed Profile played in a
surprisingly wide 2,033 locations for a low weekend per-location average of $330. On a positive note, Profile did receive a respectable B rating on CinemaScore. |
| In international box office news, Sony's Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway continued its international run by opening in additional markets this weekend. Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway grossed an estimated
$3.1 million for the frame from 8 markets, which brings the film's current international total to $21.1 million. International debuts for Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway this weekend included $1.3 million in Russia, $0.47 million in Mexico,
$0.46 million in the United Arab Emirates and $0.30 million in Saudi Arabia. Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway will open in the United Kingdom on Monday and in domestic theatres next month on June 18. |
