Weekend Estimates Update:
|
United Artists Releasing and MGM's Wrath of Man debuted in first place this weekend with an estimated $8.10 million. While the Guy Ritchie directed action-thriller starring Jason Statham didn't deliver the
type of box office impact that is typically seen during the first full weekend of May, that had been expected heading into the weekend, as Wrath of Man opened in line with pre-release expectations. Wrath of Man opened just
24 percent below $10.65 million pre-pandemic start of Ritchie's previous film, The Gentlemen (during January of 2020) and 19 percent ahead of the $6.82 million start of fellow action-thriller Nobody back in March. It
should be noted that Wrath of Man did have the advantage of debuting in 2,875 locations this weekend; in comparison Nobody debuted in 2,460 locations and The Gentlemen started out in 2,165 locations. This weekend's
per-location average of $2,817 for Wrath of Man was just ahead of the $2,772 opening weekend per-location average of Nobody. The re-teaming of Ritchie and Statham, the film's solid critical reviews and a relatively quiet
marketplace (especially for the first full weekend of May) all helped out Wrath of Man this weekend. Wrath of Man was also helped out by playing on IMAX screens this weekend, as the film grossed an estimated $0.63 million
from IMAX screens (which represented 8 percent of this weekend's overall domestic gross). Wrath of Man looks to be going over better with audiences than it has with critics, as the film received a healthy A- rating on CinemaScore.
Next weekend Wrath of Man will have to deal with competition from a handful of new releases, including Lionsgate's Spiral (which will be playing on IMAX screens), Warner's Those Who Wish Me Dead
(which will be opening day-and-date theatrically and via streaming on HBO Max), Focus' Profile and Netflix's moderate release of Army of the Dead. Wrath of Man has also grossed an estimated $17.6 million to date
internationally, including a strong $10.0 million debut in Russia. The current global total for Wrath of Man stands at $25.7 million.

Funimation and Aniplex's Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train grossed an estimated $3.05 million, which was good enough for second place. Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train was down a
sizable 53 percent and one spot from last weekend. While the anime sensation remains front-loaded, Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train did show signs of starting to stabilize this weekend, as the film held up much better than it did
last weekend. In addition to starting to benefit from good word of mouth, Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train was also helped out this weekend by playing in 183 more locations than it did last weekend (for a total of 2,088 locations).
In recent years, higher profile anime films have tended to experience significant theatre count losses in their respective third weekends, but Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train was able to buck that trend this weekend to the
film's benefit. With an impressive estimated 17-day total of $39.60 million, Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train has pulled ahead of Mortal Kombat by an estimated $1.75 million to date and at this point is highly likely to
pull off the upset victory in the total domestic box office battle with Mortal Kombat.

Speaking of Warner's Mortal Kombat, the R-rated video game adaptation remained very front-loaded by declining a very sharp 62 percent and one spot to land in third with an estimated $2.38 million. Previous
day-and-date theatrical / HBO Max releases from Warner Bros. have tended to stabilize in their respective third weekends following sharp second weekend declines, but that clearly wasn't the case for Mortal Kombat this weekend. At
this point, the extreme front-loading of Mortal Kombat the past two weekends has taken a bit of the luster away from the film's strong opening weekend performance. The 17-day domestic total for Mortal Kombat stands at
$37.85 million. Internationally, Mortal Kombat grossed an estimated $1.4 million this weekend from 40 markets. That brings the film's current international total to $34.7 million and current global haul to $72.5 million.
|
Fellow Warner Bros. release Godzilla vs. Kong followed in fourth place with an estimated $1.93 million. Godzilla vs. Kong was down one spot from last weekend and continues to show signs of stabilizing after
declining a very solid 32 percent. With a 40-day total of $92.96 million, Godzilla vs. Kong easily remains the highest grossing film since the re-opening of domestic theatres and is now just $7.04 million away from becoming the
first film to reach the $100 million domestic mark since the re-opening of theatres. Internationally, Godzilla vs. Kong added an estimated $2.2 million from 45 markets this weekend, including a debut of $0.81 million in Brazil. Respective
current totals for Godzilla vs. Kong stand at $329.6 million internationally and $422.6 million globally.
|
Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon grossed an estimated $1.87 million to claim fifth place for a third consecutive weekend. Raya and the Last Dragon was up a terrific 35 percent over last weekend, thanks
in part to the film playing in 505 more locations this weekend than last weekend (for a total of 2,315 locations), as a result of the Cinemark and Regal theatre chains beginning to play the film this weekend. Raya and the Last Dragon
was also helped out this weekend by the Mother's Day holiday and by its continued strong word of mouth. With the aid of very strong holding power, the 66-day total for Raya and the Last Dragon stands at $43.82 million. That gives
the film a strong current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 5.15 to 1.
|
Open Road and Briarcliff's Separation was down two spots from last weekend to claim sixth with an estimated $1.08 million. On the heels of last weekend's modest start, Separation had a very solid
hold for a horror film in its second weekend by declining 40 percent. Separation received a bit of a boost by playing in 160 more locations this weekend than it did last weekend (for a total of 1,911 locations). Despite this
weekend's hold, Separation has grossed just $3.38 million through ten days. The film is likely to take a bigger hit next weekend as a result of facing new direct competition from both Spiral and Army of the Dead and
less direct competition from both Those Who Wish Me Dead and Profile.
|
Sony's Here Today opened in seventh place with an estimated $0.90 million. The Billy Crystal directed comedy starring Crystal and Tiffany Haddish debuted in line with its modest expectations. While
Here Today did perform a bit stronger than other resent Stage 6 Films releases from Sony, the film's potential was limited by a fairly last minute release date, playing in a semi-wide 1,200 locations this weekend and by mixed critical reviews.
|
Meanwhile, Universal's Nobody was down 41 percent from last weekend to claim eighth with an estimated $0.76 million, while Sony's The Unholy decreased 32 percent to take ninth with a similar $0.73 million.
Nobody in particular took a clear hit this weekend from the arrival of Wrath of Man in the marketplace. Respective total domestic grosses stand at $24.57 million through 45 days for Nobody and at $14.17 million through
38 days for The Unholy. Internationally, Nobody has grossed $19.4 million to date, while The Unholy has grossed $10.0 million. That brings respective current global totals to $43.9 million for Nobody and
$24.2 million for The Unholy.
