| With revised studio estimates, Warner's Tom & Jerry ended up even higher than Sunday's estimate with a very healthy first place debut of $14.110 million. |
| Universal and DreamWorks Animation's The Croods: A New Age also came in above its weekend estimate with a second place take of $1.255 million. |

| Warner's Tom & Jerry proved to be a much needed winner at the box office this weekend with an estimated first place debut of $13.71 million. Tom & Jerry, which was directed by Tim Story and features
Chloë Grace Moretz and Michael Peña in live action roles, essentially doubled the high end of consensus expectations heading into the weekend. The computer animated / live-action hybrid easily delivered the largest opening weekend of
2021 to date, as well as the second largest opening weekend of any film since theatres re-opened this past August; behind only the estimated $16.7 million start of fellow Warner Bros. release Wonder Woman 1984. Like
Wonder Woman 1984 before it, Tom & Jerry opened day-and-date theatrically and via streaming on HBO Max. Also like Wonder Woman 1984, the opening weekend performance of Tom & Jerry benefited significantly from
strong private theatrical screenings for small groups. Tom & Jerry played in 2,475 locations this weekend, which gave the film a very healthy per-location average of $5,539. And while our estimates are by no means exact,
Tom & Jerry likely had the highest opening weekend per-showtime average of any wide release since the re-opening of theatres, as Tom & Jerry wasn't getting as many opening weekend showtimes per location in comparison to films
such as Wonder Woman 1984, The Croods: A New Age and Tenet. |
| Making the debut of Tom & Jerry even more impressive (both for itself and the state of the theatrical marketplace going forward), is that Tom & Jerry doesn't have the biggest built-in audience as far
as high-profile animated properties go (in fact, 1992's Tom and Jerry: The Movie performed quite poorly at the box office) and that critical reviews for Tom & Jerry have been poor. In addition to being critic proof at the
box office this weekend, Tom & Jerry also looks to be going over far better with audiences than it has with critics given the film's healthy A- rating on CinemaScore. The top DMA markets for Tom & Jerry this weekend
included Dallas, New York Metro (outside of New York City), Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Atlanta, Detroit, Denver and Boston. |
| Tom & Jerry and the marketplace in general will get a boost next weekend from movie theatres in New York City being able to re-open with capacity restrictions beginning on March 5. However, even with that
boost it's likely that Tom & Jerry will still take a significant hit next weekend, given that HBO Max has been having a much bigger impact on the second weekend declines of Warner Bros. releases than on opening weekend performances
and that Tom & Jerry will face new direct competition for family audiences from the release of Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon, which opens day-and-date theatrically and via streaming on Disney+ as a premier access title
on March 5. This weekend's stronger than expected start for Tom & Jerry is a good sign for both Raya and the Last Dragon next weekend and the family marketplace in general going forward, as at least family audiences
appear ready to return to theatres. Once we move beyond next weekend, Tom & Jerry is likely to hold up well throughout the rest of its run, especially given the overall lack of new family films in the near future
(other than Raya and the Last Dragon). |
| Tom & Jerry also performed nicely internationally this weekend with an estimated $19.4 million from 34 markets. Through Sunday, respective estimated totals for Tom & Jerry stand at $25.1 million
internationally and $38.8 million globally. This weekend's international performance was driven by debuts of $12.3 million in China and $3.3 million in Russia (which are the film's two highest grossing international markets to date).
Additional estimated international totals by market through Sunday for Tom & Jerry include $1.1 million in the United Arab Emirates, $1.0 million in Brazil, $0.99 million in Mexico, $0.94 million in Taiwan, $0.90 million in Singapore,
$0.73 million in Colombia, $0.69 million in South Korea and $0.66 million in India. |
| After leading the box office each of the past two weekends, Universal and DreamWorks Animation's The Croods: A New Age was down one spot this weekend to take second with an estimated $1.21 million. That
represented a 30 percent decline from last weekend, which was a solid hold; especially given the stronger than expected start of Tom & Jerry this weekend. In addition to continuing to benefit from good critical reviews and strong
word of mouth, The Croods: A New Age was also helped out this weekend by holding onto its showtimes better than other wide releases. The marketplace in general also looks to have benefited this weekend from last weekend's grosses
being deflated a bit by the closing of some theatres throughout parts of Texas (due to the aftermath of the winter storm that hit the state). The estimated 96-day total for The Croods: A New Age stands at $52.39 million. That
gives the film a strong current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 5.39 to 1. Like Tom & Jerry, The Croods: A New Age will also face new direct competition next weekend from Raya and the Last Dragon. After
taking in an estimated $0.39 million internationally this weekend, respective totals for The Croods: A New Age stand at $103.7 million internationally and $156.1 million globally. |
| Warner's The Little Things was down one spot from last weekend to land in third place with an estimated $0.93 million. The Little Things declined just 20 percent from last weekend's performance
(which places last weekend's gross at roughly $1.16 million). The Little Things has grossed an estimated $12.91 million through 31 days, which gives the film a respectable current total gross to opening weekend ratio of
2.75 to 1. After today (Sunday), The Little Things will no longer be available on HBO Max (for now). Internationally, The Little Things grossed an estimated $1.2 million this weekend from 33 markets. Through Sunday,
respective estimated totals for The Little Things stand at $10.3 million internationally and $23.2 million globally. Estimated international totals by market for the film include $3.0 million in Russia, $2.5 million in Australia,
$1.4 million in Saudi Arabia, $0.77 million in the United Arab Emirates, $0.41 million in Ukraine and $0.38 million in Taiwan. The Little Things is currently scheduled to open in Brazil and in Mexico on Thursday, March 11. |
| Warner's Wonder Woman 1984 and Open Road and Briarcliff's The Marksman remained very close to one another in this weekend's rankings, as Wonder Woman 1984 is currently in fourth with an
estimated $0.71 million and The Marksman is right behind in fifth with an estimated $0.70 million. Both films held up extremely well this weekend, as Wonder Woman 1984 declined 11 percent and The Marksman decreased
10 percent. Respective domestic totals stand at $43.62 million through 66 days for Wonder Woman 1984 and at $12.35 million through 45 days for The Marksman. |
| Additional estimated grosses of note this weekend include $0.50 million for Warner's Judas and the Black Messiah (down a significant 42 percent), $0.46 million for Sony's Monster Hunter
(down a slim 12 percent) and $0.36 million for Focus' Land (down a very solid 29 percent, with the aid of playing in an additional 98 locations this weekend). To date, Monster Hunter has grossed $14.00 million through
73 days, while respective 17-day grosses stand at $4.06 million for Judas and the Black Messiah and at $2.12 million for Land. |
| Meanwhile, official estimates for Disney and Searchlight's Nomadland still aren't being released, but unofficial estimates have the film in the same neighborhood as Land in this weekend's rankings.
Unofficially, Nomadland has grossed just over $1 million thus far. Nomadland is also available via streaming on Hulu and has been nominated for four awards at tonight's Golden Globe Awards ceremony
(Best Picture - Drama, Frances McDormand for Best Actress - Drama and Chloé Zhao for Best Director and Best Screenplay). In addition to potentially benefiting from the Golden Globes, Nomadland should also benefit next weekend
from the re-opening of New York City theaters. |
