| Weekend Actuals Update: |
| Based on today's revised global ($118.1 million) and international ($89.7 million) totals for Wonder Woman 1984, the film has grossed $28.4 million domestically through Sunday, which would place this
weekend's domestic gross closer to $5.4 million. |
| Actual grosses for this weekend include: The Croods: A New Age ($2.224 million), News of the World ($1.690 million), Monster Hunter ($1.264 million), Fatale ($701,561),
Promising Young Woman ($687,900), Pinocchio ($288,208) and The War with Grandpa ($112,835). |
| Weekend Estimates Update: |
| On the heels of last weekend's relatively impressive start, Warner's Wonder Woman 1984 remained in first place this weekend, but also lost major momentum in the process with an estimated second weekend take
of $5.50 million. That represented a 67 percent decline from last weekend's estimated start, which is an especially sharp second weekend slide; even more so given that films tend to hold up better than usual over New Year's weekend. With
a weekend actual not having been provided for last weekend, it's possible that last weekend's start for Wonder Woman 1984 may have ended up a bit lower than estimated, but even if that were the case, it wouldn't improve this
weekend's percentage hold by all that much. In addition to last weekend's start being relatively inflated by the rush-out of Wonder Woman fans, it appears that word of mouth for Wonder Woman 1984 is clearly worse than the film's
B+ CinemaScore suggests. The second weekend performance of Wonder Woman 1984 could have also been affected more than last weekend's performance by the film also being available on HBO Max
(though to be fair, thus far we haven't really seen Universal releases take an additional percentage hit upon being released on PVOD a few weeks after theatrical release). |
| Through ten days of release, Wonder Woman 1984 has grossed an estimated $28.50 million. That already makes Wonder Woman 1984 the third largest film domestically since theatres re-opened this past
August (behind only Tenet and The Croods: A New Age). The ten-day start of Wonder Woman 1984 is very close to the estimated $29.20 million Tent grossed through its first eleven days of wide release
(which also included an extra week of Canada grosses and early access preview grosses). Given the size of this weekend's decline for Wonder Woman 1984 and that Tenet grossed an estimated $6.40 million in its second weekend;
odds are that Wonder Woman 1984 will finish below Tenet domestically. Going forward, one advantage that Wonder Woman 1984 will have is that there are only two new wide releases currently scheduled for the month of
January (Open Road and Briarcliff's The Marksman on January 15 and Warner's The Little Things on January 29). The lack of new competition in the marketplace could help Wonder Woman 1984 stabilize in the weeks ahead.
Also of note with regard to the film's domestic performance, is that Wonder Woman 1984 has earned an estimated $6.2 million from PVOD in Canada thus far. Wonder Woman 1984 was released day-and-date in Canada due to the
vast majority of theatres in Canada currently being closed. |
| Internationally, Wonder Woman 1984 grossed an estimated $10.1 million this weekend from 41 markets. Through Sunday, respective international and global totals for Wonder Woman 1984 stand at
$90.0 million internationally and $118.5 million globally. Wonder Woman 1984 did hold up especially well in Australia this weekend with a second weekend take of $3.2 million. The total for Wonder Woman 1984 through Sunday
in Australia stands at $11.5 million. Additional international totals for Wonder Woman 1984 through Sunday include $25.0 million in China, $8.1 million in Taiwan, $4.4 million in Japan, $3.8 million in Brazil, $3.7 million in
South Korea, $3.6 million in Singapore, $3.5 million in Mexico, $3.3 million in Spain, $3.1 million in Thailand, $2.6 million in the United Arab Emirates and $2.5 million in Saudi Arabia. Wonder Woman 1984 will debut in Russia on
Thursday, January 14. |
| Universal and DreamWorks Animation's The Croods: A New Age was up one spot from last weekend to move back into second place this weekend with an estimated $2.18 million. The Croods: A New Age was up a
very impressive 25 percent over last weekend's performance. Historically, non-holiday family films tend to hold up very well over New Year's weekend and holdovers in general this weekend (outside of Wonder Woman 1984) held up even
better than usual for New Year's weekend (likely due in part to moviegoers looking for an alternative to Wonder Woman 1984 this weekend after rushing out to see Wonder Woman 1984 last weekend). The Croods: A New Age also
continues to benefit from both strong word of mouth and strong critical reviews. The Croods: A New Age has grossed an estimated $34.51 million through 40 days. That gives The Croods: A New Age a healthy current total gross
to opening weekend ratio of 3.55 to 1. |
| Internationally, The Croods: A New Age grossed an estimated $7.6 million this weekend from 16 markets. That brings the film's current international total to $80.4 million and the film's current global total to
$115.0 million. International highlights for The Croods: A New Age this weekend included a $0.635 million debut in Ukraine and second weekend grosses of $2.33 million in Russia, $2.11 million in Australia and $0.862 million in Spain.
To date, The Croods: A New Age has grossed $7.02 million in Australia, $6.17 million in Russia and $3.19 million in Spain. The international performance of The Croods: A New Age continues to be led by China, where the film
has grossed $52.49 million to date after grossing an estimated $0.903 million this weekend. |
| Fellow Universal release News of the World was down one spot from last weekend to claim third place this weekend with an estimated $1.69 million. News of the World was down 25 percent from last
weekend, which was a very solid, but not great second weekend hold for the film (given the New Year's holiday frame and the film's awards season potential). Some of the relative initial front-loading for News of the World is due
to the film's strong Christmas Day performance last weekend; which resulted in this Friday's performance being down 40 percent from last Friday, while this Saturday's performance was down only 9 percent from last Saturday. The estimated
ten-day take for News of the World stands at $5.41 million. Going forward, it will be especially important for News of the World to stabilize next weekend if the film is to have a lengthy run at the box office after all.

| Sony's Monster Hunter and Lionsgate's Fatale both held up very well this weekend to take fourth and fifth place with respective estimated grosses of $1.250 million and $0.700 million for the frame.
Monster Hunter was up a surprisingly strong 11 percent over last weekend, while Fatale increased by 6 percent. Monster Hunter in particular looks to have had its Christmas weekend performance deflated by the opening
weekend performance of Wonder Woman 1984. Respective estimated 17-day totals stand at $6.26 million for Monster Hunter and at $3.09 million for Fatale. Fatale has been holding up quite well thus far, as the
film already has a current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 3.37 to 1. |
| Also holding up very well this weekend was Focus' Promising Young Woman. The critically acclaimed thriller took sixth place with an estimated $0.660 million, which was down a slim 8 percent from last weekend's debut.
The ten-day total for Promising Young Woman stands at $1.87 million. Like News of the World, Promising Young Woman will hope to have a lengthy box office run in the weeks ahead with the help of awards season buzz. |
| Roadside's Pinocchio grossed an estimated $0.284 million to claim seventh place again this weekend. While Pinocchio unsurprisingly has been the lowest grossing of this year's four major Christmas Day
releases with a ten-day start of $0.773 million; the fantasy film did have the best second weekend percentage hold of the four Christmas Day releases in question, as Pinocchio was up a promising 4 percent over last weekend's launch. |
| 101 Studios' The War with Grandpa grossed an estimated $0.114 million this weekend, which was enough to hold off Disney's re-issue of 20th Century's 1979 sci-fi horror classic Alien for eighth place this weekend.
The War with Grandpa increased 27 percent over last weekend, which was especially impressive given that the film was playing in 210 fewer locations this weekend than last weekend. The 87-day total for The War with Grandpa
stands at $18.67 million. The re-issue of Alien had to settle for ninth place this weekend with just an estimated $75,000 (from a moderate 505 locations). |
