Weekend Estimates Update:

A week before Solstice Studios' Unhinged arrives in United States theatres (which will make it the first new wide release in the past five months domestically due to the COVID-19 pandemic), Unhinged and Paramount's The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run both opened in Canada this weekend. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run took in an estimated $900,000 from 300 locations for a per-location average of $3,000, while the Russell Crowe-led Unhinged (which is being handled by VVS in Canada) grossed an estimated $582,000 for a per-location average of $1,946. Upon its expansion to the United States next weekend, Unhinged will be playing in an estimated 2,000+ locations. Paramount has opted to release The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run on VOD in the United States (sometime in early 2021), instead of in theatres.

Warner's Inception (10 Year Anniversary) also opened in Canada this weekend, though a studio estimate for the film's performance in Canada wasn't released today. If weekend actual grosses for the re-issue of Christopher Nolan's Inception are reported on Monday, we will pass those figures along. Inception did gross an estimated $1.6 million internationally this weekend from 37 markets. Estimated grosses included $263,000 in the United Kingdom, $197,000 in South Korea, $186,000 in Saudi Arabia, $137,000 in Japan and $128,000 in Taiwan. Inception (10 Year Anniversary) will open in the United States this coming Friday and Christopher Nolan's long awaited new film, Tenet, is currently scheduled to arrive in select domestic theatres on September 3.

Elsewhere on the domestic front, RLJE Films' The Tax Collector took in an estimated $204,000 from 138 locations and IFC Films' The Rental grossed an estimated $78,000 from 144 locations. Respective total grosses stand at $1.327 million for The Rental in 24 days and at $634,000 for The Tax Collector in ten days.

In international box office news, Warner's 3D re-issue of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone arrived in China with an impressive estimated start of $13.6 million this weekend. Estimated IMAX grosses represented $2.1 million (15.4 percent) of this weekend's overall gross in China. With the aid of the re-issue, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone will soon be passing the $1 billion global milestone. Fellow Warner Bros. release Interstellar grossed an estimated $1.7 million in China this weekend, which brings the re-issue total in China for the Christopher Nolan directed film to $16.1 million.

This weekend also saw Sony's Bad Boys for Life debut with an estimated $3.2 million in China. To date, Bad Boys for Life has grossed an estimated $220.2 million internationally and $426.4 million globally (which continues to rank the film as the highest grossing release of 2020 globally).
