3-Day Weekend Estimates Update:

Fox’s Alita: Battle Angel pulled off a surprise victory at the box office this weekend with an estimated first place debut of $27.80 million over the three-day frame. The current four-day studio estimate for the film stands at $33.03 million, which brings the five-day start for Alita to $41.74 million. While Alita exceeded expectations by a significant amount this weekend, the film’s domestic opening still left a bit to be desired given the film’s expensive price-tag. With that said, it should also be noted that Alita: Battle Angel continues to be more impressive internationally (more on that in a bit). The five-day start for Alita: Battle Angel was 13.1 percent ahead of the $36.88 million five-day launch of 2013’s A Good Day to Die Hard and a respectable 29.2 percent behind the $58.952 million five-day haul of last year’s Ready Player One. While critical reviews for Alita have been mixed, they look to have been strong enough to not have had a negative effect on the film this weekend. Fans of James Cameron (who was a co-writer and co-producer of the Robert Rodriguez directed Alita: Battle Angel), look to have played a key role in the film’s stronger than expected start.

Alita: Battle Angel started out with $8.72 million on Valentine’s Day Thursday (including an estimated $2.43 million from Tuesday and Wednesday previews), decreased 14.1 percent on Friday to gross $7.49 million, increased an impressive 55.0 percent on Saturday to gross $11.61 million and is estimated to decrease 24.9 percent on Sunday to take in $8.71 million. In addition to holding up very nicely throughout the weekend, Alita also received a healthy A- rating on CinemaScore and currently has a 93 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Those signs all suggest that Alita is going over much better with audiences than it has with critics. With that in mind, Alita: Battle Angel could display better than initially expected holding power over the next couple weeks, until Disney’s highly anticipated Captain Marvel enters the marketplace on March 8.

As mentioned, Alita: Battle Angel continued to be more impressive internationally this weekend with an estimated $56.2 million. That brings the film’s international total to $94.4 million and current global haul to $130.9 million. This weekend, Alita debuted with $6.5 million in Russia, $5.9 million in France, $4.2 million in Mexico, $3.0 million in Australia, $3.0 million in Germany, $2.5 million in Thailand and $2.0 million in Spain. Additional current international totals for the film include $14.8 million in South Korea, $7.4 million in the U.K., $6.8 million in Taiwan, $4.5 million in Hong Kong, $4.4 million in Malaysia and $3.8 million in Indonesia. Alita: Battle Angel is now playing throughout most of the world, with the major expectations of China and Japan. The film will be opening in both of those markets this coming Friday (February 22).

Warner’s The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part took second place over the three-day frame with an estimated $21.22 million. That represented a solid, but not exceptional, second weekend decline of 37.8 percent. The decrease was very similar to the 38.4 percent second weekend decline of 2017’s The LEGO Batman Movie, though The LEGO Batman Movie grossed a stronger $32.66 million in its second weekend. The ten-day start for The LEGO Movie 2 stands at a significantly softer than expected $62.69 million. The film is running a lackluster 35.5 percent behind the $97.22 million ten-day take of The LEGO Batman Movie. The official four-day studio estimate for The LEGO Movie 2 will be released tomorrow. Competition for family audiences will also soon be getting much tougher for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part with Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World entering the marketplace this coming Friday.

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part continued to remain lackluster internationally with an estimated $12.1 million this weekend. Through Sunday, The LEGO Movie 2 has grossed $34.7 million internationally and $97.4 million globally. Current international totals by market for The LEGO Movie 2 include $9.6 million in the United Kingdom, $2.8 million in Russia, $2.3 million in Poland, $2.1 million in Germany, $1.5 million in Mexico, $1.5 million in Spain and $1.3 million in Brazil. This week, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part will open in France on Wednesday (February 20) and in Italy on Thursday (February 21).

Fellow Warner Bros. release Isn’t It Romantic debuted with an estimated $14.21 million over the three-day frame to place in third. Through Sunday, the Rebel Wilson led Isn’t It Romantic has grossed a solid $20.46 million through five days of release. That is on the low end of expectations and was just 4.2 percent behind the $21.35 million five-day take of 2016’s How to Be Single (which also featured Wilson). Isn’t It Romantic started out with $1.83 million on Wednesday, increased 142.2 percent on Valentine’s Day Thursday to take in $4.42 million, decreased 5.7 percent on Friday to take in $4.17 million, increased a healthy 41.7 percent on Saturday to gross $5.91 million and is estimated to decline 30.1 percent on Sunday to gross $4.13 million. The official four-day studio estimate for Isn’t It Romantic will be released tomorrow. Somewhat surprisingly given the Valentine’s Day holiday, Isn’t It Romantic wasn’t all that front-loaded towards Wednesday and Thursday. That is a good early sign for the film going forward, as are the film’s solid critical reviews.

Paramount’s What Men Want claimed fourth place over the three-day frame with an estimated $10.92 million. That represented a very respectable 40.1 percent decline from last weekend. The current four-day estimate for What Men Want stands at $12.60 million, which brings the film’s eleven-day gross through Monday to $37.83 million. What Men Want opened very similarly to last year’s Tyler Perry’s Acrimony, but experienced a stronger second weekend hold, as Acrimony declined 51.2 percent in its second weekend to gross $8.38 million. Thanks in part to stronger holding power; What Men Want is running 17.1 percent ahead of the $32.30 million eleven-day take of Acrimony. Given the comparison, What Men Want shouldn’t have a problem eventually passing the $50 million domestic mark.

Meanwhile, Happy Death Day 2U rounded out the weekend’s top five with an estimated $9.82 million over the three-day frame. The current four-day studio estimate for the film stands at $11.46 million, which places the six-day start for Happy Death Day 2U at $15.17 million. Happy Death Day 2U opened significantly below expectations, which had tended to range from $25 million to $30 million for the film’s six-day launch. Happy Death Day 2U also opened well below the $26.04 million three-day opening weekend take of 2017’s Happy Death Day and is running 49.8 percent behind the $30.19 million six-day start of Happy Death Day. It sounds as though Happy Death Day 2U coming across as too similar in its marketing to Happy Death Day limited potential somewhat for Happy Death Day 2U. Alita: Battle Angel exceeding expectations and Isn’t It Romantic meeting expectations also look to have taken a toll on Happy Death Day 2U as well this weekend. Critical reviews for Happy Death Day 2U have been solid, so it is still possible that the film could hold up better than usual for a horror sequel going forward.

Internationally, Happy Death Day 2U grossed an estimated $11.8 million this weekend. That places the film’s global launch through Sunday at $25.3 million. International debuts for Happy Death Day 2U included $2.2 million in South Korea, $1.0 million in France, $974,000 in Germany and $930,000 in the United Kingdom. Later this month, Happy Death Day 2U will open in Italy and in Russia on Thursday, February 28.

Lionsgate’s Cold Pursuit took sixth place in its second weekend with an estimated three-day take of $6.00 million. That represented a sizable 45.6 percent decline, which suggests that Cold Pursuit isn’t going over as well with audiences as it has with critics. The stronger than expected start of Alita: Battle Angel also looks to have taken a toll on Cold Pursuit this weekend. The current four-day estimate for Cold Pursuit is $7.05 million, which brings the film’s eleven-day take through Monday to $22.17 million. Cold Pursuit is running 15.3 percent behind the $26.16 million eleven-day haul of last year’s The Commuter, which declined 51.8 percent in its second weekend to gross $6.60 million.

In platform news, MGM’s Fighting With My Family grossed an estimated $131,625 over the three-day frame from 4 locations in NY/LA. That gave the critically acclaimed biopic of pro wrestler Paige a per-location average of $32,906 for the weekend. The current four-day estimate for Fighting With My Family stands at $163,584, which brings the film’s five-day platform start to $197,857. Dwayne Johnson was an executive producer for Fighting with My Family and also portrays himself in a supporting role. Fighting With My Family will expand to wide release in an estimated 2,500+ locations this coming Friday.

On the international front, Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World remained strong this weekend with an estimated $21.7 million. To date, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World has grossed $172.5 million internationally. That is a positive sign for the film with regard to its upcoming domestic launch this coming Friday. This week will also see How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World open in Russia on Thursday and in Spain on Friday. The film will open in China on Friday, March 1.
