Weekend Estimates Update:
|
Universal’s Glass topped this weekend’s slow Super Bowl frame with an estimated $9.54 million. Glass has now led the weekend box office for three consecutive frames. Glass declined a
sizable 49.5 percent from last weekend. The 17-day total for Glass stands at $88.66 million, which is less than expected, but still solid with the film’s modest production budget in mind. Glass is currently
$11.35 million away from reaching the $100 million domestic mark. Internationally (where the film is being distributed by Disney), Glass grossed an estimated $12.2 million this weekend. That brings the film’s international
total to $110.3 million and current global haul to $199.0 million. Current international totals by market for Glass include $11.3 million in the U.K., $10.1 million in Russia, $9.5 million in Mexico, $7.6 million in France,
$6.8 million in Germany, $6.3 million in Australia, $5.0 million in Spain, $4.4 million in Brazil and $4.3 million in Italy.
|
STXfilms’ The Upside grossed an estimated $8.85 million to continue to claim second place. The Upside continues to display terrific holding power, as the film was down only 25.9 percent from
last weekend. In addition to benefiting from strong word of mouth, The Upside was also helped a bit this weekend by opening in additional 191 locations. The 24-day total for The Upside stands at a significantly
stronger than expected $75.59 million. That already gives the film a current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 3.71 to 1. After this weekend’s hold, eventually passing the $100 million domestic mark is looking like a strong
possibility for The Upside. Internationally, The Upside grossed an estimated $873,000 this weekend. To date, The Upside has grossed $7.65 million internationally and $83.24 million globally.
|
Sony’s Miss Bala started out in third place with an estimated $6.70 million. Miss Bala debuted in line with its modest expectations, which had ranged anywhere from $5 million to $10 million
heading into the weekend. While overall interest in the film was modest to begin with, poor critical reviews helped prevent Miss Bala from finding an audience beyond fans of star Gina Rodriguez. Super Bowl weekend is
traditionally a tough weekend for new releases, but the start for Miss Bala was lackluster even by Super Bowl weekend standards. At the same time, Miss Bala had a reported production budget of just $15 million.
Miss Bala will hope to hold up well going forward, but that will be easier said than done with seven new wide releases entering the marketplace between this coming Friday and Valentine’s Day.
|
Warner’s Aquaman placed in fourth with an estimated $4.79 million. Aquaman declined 34.1 percent, which represented a very solid Super Bowl weekend hold. After 45 days of release, Aquaman
has grossed an exceptional $323.53 million. The film is now on the verge of passing the $325.10 million final domestic gross of 2016’s Suicide Squad. Aquaman registered an estimated $4.6 million internationally this
weekend. To date, Aquaman has grossed $783.4 million internationally and a massive $1.107 billion globally. Current international totals by market for Aquaman include $291.7 million in China, $39.1 million in
South Korea, $35.4 million in Brazil, $30.4 million in Mexico, $28.8 million in Australia, $28.4 million in the United Kingdom, $27.1 million in France and $23.9 million in Germany. Aquaman is set to open in Japan this
coming Friday (February 8).
|
Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse took fifth with an estimated $4.41 million. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse continues to display strong holding power, as the film was down just
27.8 percent. With a 52-day take of $175.29 million, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is on the verge of passing the $175.75 million final domestic gross of 2017’s The LEGO Batman Movie.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is likely to take a hit next weekend when Warner’s The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part enters the marketplace. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse grossed an estimated
$1.6 million internationally this weekend, which brings the film’s international total to $172.0 million and current global haul to $347.3 million.
|
Universal and DreamWorks’ Green Book claimed sixth place with an estimated $4.32 million. Thanks in part to continued strong word of mouth, ongoing awards season buzz and opening in an additional
218 locations this weekend, Green Book was down a slim 21.3 percent. Through 80 days of release, Green Book has grossed a healthy $55.82 million. Internationally this weekend, Green Book debuted with an
estimated $2.09 million in the United Kingdom (including previews), an estimated $1.20 million in Germany (also including previews) and with an estimated $1.14 million in Spain. Green Book also grossed an estimated
$1.02 million in Australia, where the film has grossed $3.16 million to date. Green Book is being handled in all four of the mentioned international markets by Amblin Partners.
|
In its second weekend of release, Fox’s The Kid Who Would Be King placed in seventh with an estimated $4.20 million. That represented a respectable 41.5 percent decline. However, the ten-day start
for The Kid Who Would Be King stands at a softer than expected $13.17 million. The Kid Who Would Be King has also had a lackluster performance internationally thus far, as the film has grossed just $5.0 million
internationally after taking in an estimated $1.23 million this weekend. The current global total for The Kid Who Would Be King stands at $18.2 million.
|
In other box office news, a pair of critically acclaimed documentary films made noise this weekend upon being released in more locations. After three very successful event show performances in December and
January, Warner’s They Shall Not Grow Old started a traditional run this weekend with an estimated $2.41 million from 735 locations. Meanwhile, National Geographic and Greenwich’s Free Solo grossed an estimated
$1.39 million from 483 locations, upon re-opening in 354 IMAX locations. This weekend’s performance was the highest grossing weekend to date for Free Solo. Respective total grosses stand at $14.99 million for
Free Solo and at $10.75 million for They Shall Not Grow Old.
|
On the international front, Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World grossed an estimated $40.2 million this weekend. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
opened in an additional 23 international markets this weekend. Debuts for the film this weekend included $7.67 million in Mexico, $6.82 million in the United Kingdom, $4.65 million in South Korea and $3.45 million in Italy. To date,
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World has grossed $84.4 million internationally. In the coming week, the film will open in France on Wednesday (February 6) and in Germany on Thursday (February 7).
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World will open domestically on February 22.
