Please note that due in part to the changing daily location counts for Dragon Ball Super: Broly, we won't be passing along a 4-day weekend figure for the film until actuals are released tomorrow. However, with Dragon Ball Super: Broly expected to be playing in significantly more locations on Monday than it was on Sunday, the film is likely to have a strong Monday hold.

3-Day Weekend Estimates Update:

Universal’s Glass debuted in first place this weekend with an estimated $40.59 million over the three-day frame. The film’s estimated four-day start is currently $47.06 million. Glass debuted below expectations, which had ranged anywhere from $50 million to $70 million for the four-day frame. At the same time, with a production budget of just $20 million, the M. Night Shyamalan directed Glass was still off to a solid start with the film’s modest cost in mind. The four-day start for Glass represents the third largest four-day Martin Luther King weekend opener ever (behind only American Sniper in 2015 and Ride Along in 2014), while the film’s three-day start represents the fourth largest three-day January debut of all-time (behind only American Sniper, Ride Along and 2016’s Kung Fu Panda 3). The four-day launch for Glass was 9.6 percent ahead of the $42.94 million four-day start of 2017’s Split, though Split didn’t have the added advantage of opening over Martin Luther King weekend and going forward Glass is likely to be significantly more front-loaded than Split was. There appears to be little doubt that potential for Glass was limited somewhat by the film’s largely negative critical reviews.

Glass started out with $15.99 million on Friday (which included an estimated $3.7 million from Thursdays shows that began at 7PM), decreased a respectable 8.4 percent on Saturday to take in $14.64 million, is estimated to decline 32.0 percent on Sunday to gross $9.96 million and estimated to slow 35.0 percent on Monday to take in $6.47 million. As mentioned, critical reviews for Glass have been negative. Glass does look to be going over better with audiences, as the film received a respectable B rating on CinemaScore.

Internationally, Glass is being distributed by Disney (the studio behind the original Unbreakable way back in 2000). Glass grossed an estimated $48.5 million internationally this weekend, which places the film’s global launch through Sunday at $89.1 million. International debuts for Glass this weekend included $5.2 million in Russia, $4.5 million in Mexico, $4.3 million in the United Kingdom, $3.4 million in France, $2.8 million in South Korea, $2.8 million in Germany, $2.4 million in Australia, $2.1 million in Italy, $2.0 million in Spain, $1.5 million in Brazil and $1.5 million in Indonesia.

STXfilms’ The Upside held up very well this weekend with an estimated $15.67 million over the three-day frame. That was down only 23.0 percent from the film’s opening weekend performance. The current four-day weekend estimate for the film is $19.51 million. The Upside was aided this weekend by strong word of mouth, the Martin Luther King holiday and from opening in an additional 240 locations. The estimated eleven-day total for The Upside through Monday stands at a significantly stronger than expected $47.82 million. That places the film an impressive 19.3 percent ahead of the $40.07 million eleven-day take of 2015’s The Wedding Ringer. With the momentum of this weekend’s strong hold, The Upside is likely to continue holding up well going forward. Internationally, The Upside has taken in $4.1 million to date, which places the film’s global total through Sunday at $48.1 million.

This weekend also saw Funimation Films’ Dragon Ball Super: Broly exceed expectations in a big way. Unofficially, Dragon Ball Super: Broly grossed an estimated $10.66 million over the three-day frame, which places the film’s five-day start since Wednesday at an exceptional $21.08 million. It should be noted that other unofficial weekend estimates for the film are lower; while other unofficial estimates are even higher (estimating the film’s future performance is more difficult than usual given daily theatre count changes – Dragon Ball Super: Broly started out in 1,250 locations on Wednesday and Thursday, played in just 467 locations on Friday and was back in 1,250 locations on Saturday). Regardless of the film’s ultimate gross this weekend, Dragon Ball Super: Broly has already far exceeded the $8.01 million total domestic gross of 2015’s Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ (which had an opening weekend of $1.82 million and a six-day launch of $5.76 million). Given the strong start of Dragon Ball Super: Broly (especially with per-location averages in mind), look for the film to have a longer than initially expected stay in theatres going forward.

Internationally, Dragon Ball Super: Broly is being distributed by Fox. This weekend the film grossed an estimated $5.3 million internationally from just 18 markets (a number of which are in South America). Through Sunday, Dragon Ball Super: Broly has grossed $65.8 million internationally and $86.9 million globally. Current international totals by market for the film include $33.3 million in Japan, $9.5 million in Mexico, $4.3 million in Brazil, $3.8 million in Peru, $3.0 million in Chile, $2.6 million in Argentina and $2.4 million in Colombia.

Warner’s Aquaman took in an estimated $10.33 million over the three-day frame, which will place the film in either third or fourth place this weekend (depending on where Dragon Ball Super: Broly ultimately ends up). This weekend saw Aquaman pass the $300 million domestic mark. After 31 days of release, Aquaman has grossed a stronger than expected $304.34 million. For the three-day frame, Aquaman was down 40.5 percent from last weekend, which was a respectable hold, especially since the film lost its IMAX shows this weekend to Glass. The official four-day studio estimate for Aquaman will be released tomorrow.

Internationally, Aquaman grossed an estimated $13.4 million this weekend. Through Sunday, Aquaman has grossed $759.1 million internationally and a massive $1.063 billion globally. Current international totals by market for Aquaman include $289.7 million in China, $39.0 million in South Korea, $33.9 million in Brazil, $29.7 million in Mexico, $27.3 million in the United Kingdom, $26.2 million in Australia, $25.7 million in France, $22.3 million in Germany, $19.2 million in Russia and $17.5 million in Indonesia. Aquaman will open in Japan on Friday, February 8.

Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse placed in fifth over the three-day frame with an estimated $7.26 million. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse continued to display strong holding power, as the film was down a slim 19.8 percent from last weekend. The current four-day estimate for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is $9.16 million. The 39-day total for the film through Monday stands at a very healthy $160.16 million. That is just 4.5 percent behind the $167.66 million 39-day gross of 2017’s The LEGO Batman Movie. Internationally, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse grossed an estimated $4.7 million this weekend. Through Sunday, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has grossed $164.6 million internationally and $322.9 million globally.

Fellow Sony release A Dog’s Way Home followed closely behind in sixth place with an estimated $7.11 million for the three-day frame. That represented a solid 36.8 percent decline from the film’s opening weekend performance. For the four-day frame, A Dog’s Way Home is currently estimated to finish just ahead of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse with $9.50 million. The eleven-day total for A Dog’s Way Home through Monday is $23.67 million, which is in line with the film’s relatively modest expectations. Internationally, A Dog’s Way Home grossed an estimated $2.8 million this weekend from 8 markets, including a $1.6 million debut in Mexico. Through Sunday, A Dog’s Way Home has grossed $5.1 million internationally and $26.4 million globally. Over the next week, A Dog’s Way Home will open in Germany on Thursday (January 24) and in the United Kingdom on Friday (January 25).

Check back on Monday for updated four-day studio estimates.
