Weekend Box Office Report
November 9 - November 11, 2018

By Daniel Garris

Weekend Actuals Update:

With actuals now in, Universal’s Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch came in above yesterday’s studio estimate with a strong first place debut of $67.573 million.

Fox’s Bohemian Rhapsody also came in higher than its weekend estimate with a second place take of $31.202 million and surpassed the $100 million domestic mark in the process on Sunday.

Other weekend actuals for the frame include: Overlord ($10.202 million), The Nutcracker and the Four Realms ($10.087 million), A Star is Born ($8.105 million), The Girl in the Spider’s Web ($7.810 million), Nobody’s Fool ($6.636 million), Venom ($4.915 million), Halloween ($3.999 million) and The Hate U Give ($2.051 million).

Weekend Estimates Update:

Universal and Illumination’s Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch debuted in first place this weekend with an estimated $66.00 million. The Grinch was off to a strong start, as the film opened towards the higher end of pre-release expectations which had tended to range anywhere from $50 million to $70 million heading into the weekend. The Grinch did open 6.0 percent below the $70.22 million start of 2012’s Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax (which was also from Universal and Illumination), but going forward The Grinch is likely to display stronger holding power than The Lorax did, thanks in part to the ongoing holiday box office season. At the same time, it was especially important for The Grinch to get off to a healthy start this weekend with Warner’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald entering the marketplace this coming Friday and Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet arriving shortly afterwards on Wednesday, November 21.

Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch began its run with $18.71 million on Friday (which included an estimated $2.20 million from Thursday night shows that began at 6PM), increased a strong 47.0 percent on Saturday to register $27.50 million and is estimated to decline 28.0 percent on Sunday to take in $19.80 million. It should also be noted that thanks to Veterans Day falling on Sunday this year, Monday’s grosses in general will be stronger than usual. Critical reviews for The Grinch have been mixed, but the film looks to be going over much better with audiences after receiving a healthy A- rating on CinemaScore.

Internationally, Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch started out with an estimated $12.7 million from 23 mostly smaller international markets. That places the film’s global launch at $78.7 million. This weekend’s international performance for The Grinch was largely driven by a $6.5 million debut in the United Kingdom. Other grosses for the film this weekend included $1.31 million in Brazil, $747,000 in Norway and $668,000 in Sweden. Later this month Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch will open in France on November 28, in Australia, Italy and Germany on November 29 and in Spain on November 30.

On the heels of last weekend’s stronger than expected start, Fox’s Bohemian Rhapsody exceeded expectations again this weekend with an estimated $30.85 million second place take. That represented a decline of just 39.6 percent from last weekend; a hold which is made even more impressive by the fact that Bohemian Rhapsody lost IMAX shows to both The Grinch and Overlord this weekend. Clearly, Bohemian Rhapsody is going over much better with audiences than it has with critics (as suggested by the film’s strong A rating on CinemaScore). Bohemian Rhapsody is estimated to cross the $100 million domestic mark on Sunday and has grossed $100.01 million through ten days of release. That places the film an impressive 5.7 percent ahead of the $94.61 million grossed by A Star is Born after ten days of release (which declined only 33.7 percent in its second weekend to gross $28.45 million).

Bohemian Rhapsody continued to shine internationally this weekend with an estimated $63.1 million. That brings the film’s international total to $185.3 million and current global haul to $285.3 million. This weekend saw Bohemian Rhapsody debut with $4.4 million in Japan. Current international totals for Bohemian Rhapsody by market include $38.2 million in the United Kingdom (where the film was down a slim 16 percent to gross $6.31 million in its third frame), $14.6 million in South Korea (where the film increased a massive 44 percent to take in $7.03 million in its second frame), $14.3 million in France, $12.5 million in Mexico, $12.5 million in Australia, $10.4 million in Germany, $9.9 million in Spain, $9.4 million in Russia and $5.3 million in Brazil. Bohemian Rhapsody will open in India this coming Friday.

Paramount’s Overlord opened in third place with an estimated $10.10 million. That was in line with pre-release expectations, which had tended to range from $8 million to $13 million. This weekend’s start for Overlord was just below the $11.07 million launch of Paramount’s Annihilation this past February. A number of factors helped Overlord this weekend, including IMAX shows, the Veterans Day holiday and strong critical reviews. Overlord received a respectable B rating on CinemaScore, which suggests that audience reaction to the film is slightly below the film’s critical reaction. Internationally, Overlord grossed an estimated $9.2 million this weekend. That places the film’s global launch at $19.3 million. International debuts for Overlord included $1.4 million in Russia, $855,000 in the United Kingdom and $709,000 in Indonesia.

Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms followed in fourth with an estimated $9.57 million. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms was down a sharp 53.0 percent, as poor critical reviews, mixed word of mouth and the arrival of The Grinch all clearly took a toll this weekend. The ten-day total for The Nutcracker and the Four Realms stands at $35.26 million, which is towards the lower end of expectations and is lackluster with the film’s pricey production budget in mind. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms continued to fare somewhat better internationally this weekend with an estimated $13.5 million. To date, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms has grossed $61.4 million internationally and $96.7 million globally. Current international grosses for the film include $15.8 million in China, $8.2 million in Italy, $4.7 million in Germany, $4.4 million in the United Kingdom, $4.2 million in Mexico and $3.6 million in Spain.

Sony and MGM’s The Girl in the Spider’s Web took fifth with an estimated debut of $8.02 million. That was on the very low end of already scaled back expectations, which like those for Overlord, had ranged from roughly $8 million to $13 million. There simply wasn’t much interest for a follow-up to 2011’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, especially without director David Fincher attached. The Girl in the Spider’s Web is sure to be much more front-loaded than The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was, thanks to its non-Christmas opening and poor critical reviews. On a positive note The Girl in the Spider’s Web looks to be going over better with audiences than with critics, as the film received a B rating on CinemaScore. Internationally, The Girl in the Spider’s Web grossed an estimated $6.2 million, including starts of $1.3 million in Russia, $710,000 in Mexico and $605,000 in Australia. To date, The Girl in the Spider’s Web has grossed $8.3 million internationally and $16.3 million globally.

Warner’s A Star is Born followed very closely behind in sixth place with an estimated $8.01 million and could obviously move into fifth place before everything is said and done this weekend. A Star is Born continued to display terrific holding power, as the film was down only 27.2 percent. A Star is Born has grossed $178.02 million after 38 days of release, which gives the film an impressive current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 4.15 to 1. Internationally, A Star is Born grossed an estimated $9.0 million this weekend. Respective current totals for the film stand at $144.8 million internationally and $322.8 million globally. Current international totals for A Star is Born by market include $33.1 million in the United Kingdom, $17.1 million in Australia, $12.6 million in France, $8.6 million in Germany, $7.5 million in Italy, $5.7 million in Brazil, $4.9 million in Taiwan and $4.8 million in Spain.

In other box office news, Sony’s Venom launched with an estimated $111.0 million in China. That represents the second largest start ever for a comic book adaptation in China (behind only Avengers: Infinity War earlier this year) and the largest debut ever for Sony in China. Internationally as a whole, Venom took in an estimated $118.2 million this weekend, which brings the film’s international total to $467.3 million. On the domestic front, Venom placed in eighth with an estimated $4.85 million. That represented a solid 38.4 percent decline and brings the film’s 38-day domestic total to a stronger than expected $206.23 million. The current global haul for Venom stands at a massive $673.5 million.
