3-Day Weekend Estimates Update: |
Warner’s Crazy Rich Asians continued to lead the box office with ease this weekend with an estimated $22.24 million over the three-day frame. That represented a slim 10.4 percent decline from last
weekend’s already tremendous hold. Crazy Rich Asians passed the $100 million domestic mark this weekend and has grossed an estimated $110.96 million through the end of Sunday. That already gives the film a current total
gross to opening weekend ratio of 4.19 to 1. Crazy Rich Asians continues to benefit from strong critical reviews and strong word of mouth and from becoming a must-see event film for many moviegoers. Crazy Rich Asians
is running 14.6 percent ahead of the $96.83 million 19-day gross of The Help and continues to have a good chance of eventually reaching the $200 million domestic mark given the magnitude of its holding power so far. The
official four-day weekend studio estimate for Crazy Rich Asians will be released tomorrow. |
Internationally, Crazy Rich Asians grossed an estimated $10.4 million this weekend from 24 territories. Through Sunday, Crazy Rich Asians has grossed $19.9 million internationally and
$130.9 million globally. The film’s international performance this weekend was driven by a strong $5.4 million debut in Australia (including previews). Other current international totals for the film include $3.4 million in
Singapore, $2.8 million in the Philippines, $1.4 million in Malaysia and $1.1 million in Taiwan. Crazy Rich Asians will open in the United Kingdom on September 14. |
Fellow Warner Bros. release The Meg continued to claim third place with an estimated $10.53 million over the three-day frame. Crazy Rich Asians and The Meg have now occupied the top two
spots at the box office for three consecutive weekends and Warner Bros. could very well duplicate the feat again next weekend with The Nun and Crazy Rich Asians
(depending in part on next weekend’s debut of STXfilms’ Peppermint). The Meg was down 17.8 percent from last weekend, which represented a very healthy hold, especially since this year’s Labor Day weekend holds in general
weren’t out-of-this-world by Labor Day weekend standards. The Meg continues to outpace expectations in a big way, as the film as grossed $120.52 million through 24 days of release. The official four-day weekend studio estimate
for The Meg will be released tomorrow. |
The Meg grossed an estimated $17.7 million internationally this weekend. Through Sunday, The Meg has grossed $342.3 million internationally and $462.8 million globally. International totals for
The Meg to date include $150.9 million in China, $19.2 million in Mexico, $18.4 million in the United Kingdom, $12.9 million in Russia, $10.2 million in Spain, $8.3 million in France, $6.8 million in Brazil, $6.5 million in
Indonesia, $6.2 million in Malaysia and $6.1 million in Australia. |
Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout was up one spot from last weekend to move into third place with an estimated $7.00 million over the three-day frame. Mission: Impossible – Fallout
declined just 13.4 percent from last weekend. This weekend Mission: Impossible – Fallout passed the $200 million domestic milestone. Through Sunday, the 38-day total domestic gross stands at $204.35 million for
Mission: Impossible – Fallout. That leaves the film just $5.05 million away from the $209.40 million final domestic gross of 2011’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Mission: Impossible – Fallout will move
even close to the final gross of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol on Monday, as the current four-day weekend studio estimate for Mission: Impossible – Fallout is $9.00 million. |
Mission: Impossible – Fallout grossed an estimated $89.1 million internationally this weekend, which was driven by the film’s impressive $77.3 million debut in China. Through Sunday,
Mission: Impossible – Fallout has grossed $442.7 million internationally and $647.0 million globally. |
MGM’s Operation Finale debuted in fourth place with an estimated $6.00 million over the three-day frame. After starting out with a respectable $1.73 million on Wednesday and Thursday,
Operation Finale didn’t pick up as much over the weekend as is typically the case for a Wednesday opener over Labor Day weekend (which is a concerning early sign for the film going forward). The five-day start for
Operation Finale stands at a modest $7.73 million. That places the film 34.5 percent behind the $11.81 million five-day start of 2011’s The Debt. Critical reviews for Operation Finale have been mixed, but the film looks
to be going over better with audiences, as it received a healthy A- rating on CinemaScore. The official four-day weekend estimate for Operation Finale will be released tomorrow. |
Sony’s Searching rounded out the weekend’s top five with an estimated $5.70 million over the three-day frame. Searching was playing in just 1,207 locations this weekend, which gave the film a very
solid per-location average of $4,722 for the frame. While Searching finished slightly behind Operation Finale this weekend, it had the more impressive performance of the two films this weekend when taking into account
respective costs, expectations and per-location averages. Overall buzz surrounding Searching had been low, but thanks in part to very strong critical reviews and last weekend’s successful platform launch, anticipation for the
film certainly grew as this weekend approached. Given its strong reviews, growing buzz and modest current location count, Searching could hold up significantly better than usual going forward for a Labor Day weekend opener.
Through Sunday, the ten-day total for Searching stands at $6.21 million. The current four-day weekend studio estimate for Searching is $7.00 million. |
Searching grossed an estimated $5.9 million internationally this weekend from seven international territories, including a $5.1 million debut in South Korea (including previews) and a $1.0 million debut in the
United Kingdom (including previews). To date, Searching has grossed $6.5 million internationally and $12.7 million globally through Sunday. |
Disney’s Christopher Robin claimed sixth place with an estimated $5.03 million over the three-day frame. Christopher Robin was down 19.6 percent from last weekend. Thanks in part to strong holding
power; Christopher Robin has grossed a very solid $85.44 million in 31 days. That gives Christopher Robin a current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 3.48 to 1. The current four-day weekend studio estimate for
Christopher Robin is $6.54 million. Internationally, Christopher Robin grossed an estimated $4.7 million this weekend. That brings the film’s international total to $45.9 million and global total through Sunday to
$131.3 million. The United Kingdom has been the highest grossing international territory for Disney’s Christopher Robin with $13.6 million to date. |
In other Disney box office news this weekend, the studio’s Incredibles 2 passed the $600 million domestic milestone after grossing an estimated $3.16 million over the three-day weekend.
Incredibles 2 is just the ninth film ever to reach the $600 million unadjusted domestic mark, with four of the nine films having been released by Disney since December of 2017
(Star Wars: The Last Jed, Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War being the other three). Incredibles 2 has grossed $601.02 million through Sunday. The current four-day weekend studio estimate for
Incredibles 2 is $4.39 million. Internationally, Incredibles 2 added an estimated $9.6 million. That brings the film’s international total to $562.5 million and global take through Sunday to a massive $1.164 billion. |
Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s Kin debuted in twelfth place with an estimated $3.02 million over the three-day frame. Kin was off to a very soft start this weekend and performed on the very low end of its
already low expectations. This weekend’s performance for Kin was very similar to the $2.80 million launch of Global Road’s A-X-L last weekend. Kin has received poor critical reviews, though the film looks to be
going over with audiences as it received a solid B+ rating on CinemaScore. The current four-day weekend studio estimate for Kin is $3.70 million. |
