Weekend Estimates Update: |
Disney’s Solo: A Star Wars Story took in an estimated $29.30 million this weekend to remain in first place at the box office. However, Solo: A Star Wars Story was down a very sharp 65.3 percent
from last weekend’s three-day start. While it is becoming more and more commonplace for high-profile Memorial Day weekend releases to experience very sharp second weekend declines, Solo: A Star Wars Story was facing much
softer than usual new competition for the post-Memorial Day weekend frame. With the competition about to start getting much tougher next weekend, this weekend’s hold is a concerning sign for Solo: A Star Wars Story going
forward. Solo: A Star Wars Story has grossed a much softer than expected $148.89 million in ten days. That places the film 29.4 percent ahead of the $115.10 million ten-day haul of last year’s
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, 13.4 percent behind the $171.90 million ten-day take of last year’s Justice League and a disappointing 47.9 percent behind the $286.03 million ten-day gross of 2016’s
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. |
Internationally, Solo: A Star Wars Story grossed an estimated $30.3 million this weekend. That brings the film’s international total to a soft $115.3 million and current global total to $264.2 million.
Current international totals by market for Solo: A Star Wars Story include $18.6 million in the U.K., $14.7 million in China, $9.8 million in Germany, $8.8 million in Australia, $7.5 million in France, $5.0 million in Russia,
$4.8 million in Spain, $4.1 million in Mexico, $3.8 million in Italy and $2.9 million in Brazil. |
The news was much better for Fox’s Deadpool 2 this weekend, which held steady in second place with an estimated $23.33 million. On the heels of last weekend’s sharp second weekend decline,
Deadpool 2 stabilized nicely this weekend by falling a very respectable 46.3 percent from last weekend’s three-day take. The third weekend percentage hold of Deadpool 2 was similar to that of the third weekend hold of
2016’s Deadpool, which fell 44.9 percent to gross $31.12 million (after experiencing a sharp second weekend decline of its own). Deadpool 2 passed the $250 million domestic mark this weekend and has grossed a healthy
$254.65 million in 17 days. The film is running 3.0 percent ahead of the $247.27 million 17-day take of last year’s Thor: Ragnarok and a reasonable 10.7 percent behind the $285.25 million 17-day haul of Deadpool. This
weekend saw Deadpool 2 surpass both 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past and 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand to become the second highest grossing X-Universe film of all-time (behind only Deadpool). |
Deadpool 2 was the weekend’s top film internationally with an estimated $41.57 million. Deadpool 2 has grossed $344.0 million to date internationally and is on the brink of passing the
$600 million global mark with a current global total of $598.7 million. Current international totals by market for Deadpool 2 include $37.0 million in the U.K., $30.5 million in South Korea, $22.6 million in Australia,
$20.2 million in Russia, $19.1 million in Mexico, $18.4 million in Germany, $17.9 million in France, $15.6 million in Brazil, $9.2 million in Spain, $9.1 million in Taiwan, $8.3 million in Indonesia and $7.9 million in Italy. |
STXfilms’ Adrift debuted in third place with an estimated $11.51 million. That was in line with expectations, which had tended to range from $10 million to the low teens heading into the weekend. The
opening weekend performance of Adrift was 9.1 percent ahead of the $10.55 million start of last year’s The Mountain Between Us and 38.5 percent behind the $18.72 million start of 2016’s Me Before You.
Adrift started out with $4.23 million on Friday (which included an estimated $725,000 from Thursday night shows that began at 7PM), increased a slim 1.2 percent on Saturday to take in $4.28 million and is estimated to decline
29.9 percent on Sunday to gross $3.00 million. Adrift has gone over well with critics and received a respectable B rating on CinemaScore. Adrift will hope to hold up well going forward
(especially during summer weekdays), but will also be facing new direct competition beginning next weekend from Warner’s Ocean’s 8. |
Disney’s Avengers: Infinity War placed in fourth with an estimated $10.37 million. Avengers: Infinity War declined 40.0 percent from last weekend’s three-day frame, which represented a very solid
percentage hold for a superhero film over the post-Memorial Day weekend frame. The 38-day total for Avengers: Infinity War stands at $642.87 million. That leaves the film just $9.40 million away from surpassing
2015’s Jurassic World to move into fifth place on the all-time unadjusted domestic list. Avengers: Infinity War remained strong internationally this weekend with an estimated $24.3 million, including an estimated
$13.2 million from China, where the film has grossed $356.2 million to date. The current international total for Avengers: Infinity War stands at $1.322 billion; while the film’s current global haul stands at a massive
$1.965 billion (leaving the film just $35 million away from reaching the $2 billon global milestone). |
Paramount’s Book Club rounded out the weekend’s top five with an estimated $6.80 million. Book Club continued to display very strong holding power, as the film was down just 32.5 percent from last
weekend’s three-day gross. In addition to continuing to benefit from strong word of mouth and from skewing heavily towards older moviegoers, Book Club received an added boost this weekend from expanding to an additional
359 locations. Book Club is turning into a break-out hit with a strong 17-day take of $47.32 million. That already gives the film a current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 3.48 to 1. |
OTL Releasing and BH Tilt’s Upgrade debuted in sixth place with an estimated $4.46 million. The low-budget sci-fi action film opened a bit ahead of its modest expectations and 7.7 percent ahead of the
$4.14 million start of last year’s The Belko Experiment (which was also from OTL Releasing and BH Tilt). Upgrade was playing in just 1,457 locations this weekend, which gave the film a respectable per-location average of
$3,061 for the frame. Upgrade appears to have been helped out by its strong critical reviews. |
Meanwhile, Paramount’s Action Point failed to make an impact this weekend with an estimated ninth place start of only $2.32 million. Action Point debuted below its already modest
expectations, which had ranged from roughly $4 million to $8 million. Action Point performed very poorly for a film starring Johnny Knoxville, but the film’s performance didn’t come as much of a surprise given the apparent
lack of pre-release interest in he film. Knoxville’s popularity appears to have significantly faded in the five years since the release of 2013’s Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa. Poor critical reviews didn’t help matters for
Action Point either this weekend, nor did opening so soon after Solo: A Star Wars Story and (especially) Deadpool 2. Action Point received a lackluster C+ rating on CinemaScore. |
