Weekend Actuals Update: |
With actuals now in, Disney’s Black Panther came in just ahead of yesterday’s studio estimate with a third weekend gross of $66.307 M. That represented the third largest third weekend gross of all-time. |
Meanwhile, Fox’s Red Sparrow came in just below its weekend estimate with a second place debut of $16.853 M, while MGM’s Death Wish opened nearly on par with yesterday’s estimate with a third place
start of $13.010 M. |
Other weekend actuals for the frame include: Game Night ($10.412 M), Peter Rabbit ($10.005 M), Annihilation ($5.608 M), Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle ($4.438 M),
Fifty Shades Freed ($3.401 M) and The Greatest Showman ($2.703 M). |
Weekend Estimates Update: |
Disney’s Black Panther continued to easily lead the box office this weekend with an estimated $65.71 M in its third frame. That represented the third largest third weekend gross of all-time, behind only
2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($90.24 M) and 2009’s Avatar ($68.49 M). The third weekend gross of Black Panther was 18.1 percent stronger than the $55.64 M third weekend gross of 2012’s
Marvel’s The Avengers. On the heels of last weekend’s strong hold, Black Panther continued to hold up very well for a film of its size this weekend, as it was down 41.2 percent. Black Panther passed the
$500 M domestic mark this weekend and has grossed a massive $501.11 M in 17 days. That already ranks the film in tenth place on the all-time unadjusted domestic list. In reaching the $500 M domestic milestone in 17 days, Black Panther is tied with Jurassic World as the third fastest film ever to reach
the $500 M domestic mark, behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens (10 days) and last year’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi (16 days). Black Panther is running an exceptional 9.5 percent ahead of the $457.67 M 17-day
take of Marvel’s The Avengers. |
Internationally, Black Panther took in an estimated $56.2 M this weekend. That brings the film’s international total to $396.6 M and current global haul to $897.7 M. This weekend Black Panther
debuted with $2.4 M in Japan ($4.2 M with previews). International totals to date for Black Panther include $49.1 M in the U.K., $41.4 M in South Korea, $24.9 M in Brazil, $22.3 M in Australia, $22.0 M in Mexico, $21.4 M in
France, $14.9 M in Germany, $12.9 M in Russia, $11.9 M in Taiwan and $11.3 M in Indonesia. |
Fox’s Red Sparrow debuted in second place with an estimated $17.00 M. The thriller starring Jennifer Lawrence opened on the low end of expectations, which ranged from the high-teens to the low-twenties
heading into the weekend. The opening weekend performance of Red Sparrow was on par with the $17.02 M Christmas weekend start of 2015’s Joy (which also starred Jennifer Lawrence and was also released by Fox). In
addition to the competition from Black Panther, potential for Red Sparrow was likely limited a bit by the film’s lukewarm critical reviews. Red Sparrow looks to be going over better with audiences, as the film
received a respectable B rating on CinemaScore. Red Sparrow grossed $6.03 M on Friday (which included an estimated $1.20 M from Thursday night shows that began at 7 PM), increased 11.6 percent on Saturday to take in $6.73 M and
is estimated to decrease 36.8 percent on Sunday to gross $4.25 M. |
Red Sparrow was a bit more impressive internationally this weekend with an estimated $26.57 M. That places the film’s global launch at $43.6 M. International starts for Red Sparrow this weekend
included $2.60 M in Germany, $2.58 M in the U.K., $2.40 M in Taiwan, $2.17 M in Australia, $2.00 M in Spain, $1.64 M in Mexico, $1.51 M in Italy and $1.02 M in Indonesia. |
MGM’s Death Wish followed in third place with an estimated $13.03 M start. The Bruce Willis led remake debuted a bit below pre-release expectations, which had tended to range from the mid-teens to the
high-teens. The opening weekend take of Death Wish was essentially on par with the $13.11 M launch of last year’s The Foreigner. Like Red Sparrow, potential for Death Wish looks to have been limited by the
mighty presence of Black Panther and somewhat by critical reviews, which were largely negative for Death Wish. However, there looks to be a sharp divide between critics and audiences on Death Wish, as the film
received a solid B+ rating on CinemaScore and currently has a healthy 85 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Death Wish began with $4.28 M on Friday (which included an estimated $650 K from Thursday night shows at 7 PM),
increased a promising 22.6 percent on Saturday to take in $5.24 M and is estimated to slow 33.0 percent on Sunday to gross $3.51 M. Death Wish will hope to transfer its good early word of mouth into strong holding power going
forward. |
Warner and New Line’s Game Night held up well in its second weekend with an estimated fourth place take of $10.71 M. Game Night was down just 37.0 percent from last weekend’s solid debut, as strong
critical reviews and good word of mouth look to be having a positive effect for the film. Game Night is performing in line with expectations with a ten-day gross of $33.54 M. That places Game Night 5.9 percent ahead of
the $31.66 M ten-day start of 2016’s Office Christmas Party (which fell a significantly sharper 49.2 percent in its second weekend to gross $8.59 M). |
Game Night grossed an estimated $8.4 M internationally this weekend. The film has grossed $16.0 M to date internationally and $49.5 M globally. This weekend saw Game Night debut with $1.5 M in
the U.K. (including previews) and $1.2 M in Germany (also including previews). Other early international totals for Game Night include $3.0 M in Australia and $2.1 M in Russia. |
Sony’s Peter Rabbit rounded out the weekend’s top five with an estimated $10.00 M. Peter Rabbit held up very well this weekend, as the film was down just 21.6 percent. With a stronger than
expected 24-day gross of $84.06 M and the film likely to continue to hold up well going forward, Peter Rabbit will have no problem passing the $100 M domestic mark. Internationally, Peter Rabbit grossed an estimated
$14.3 M this weekend, thanks in large part to the film’s $12.7 M launch in China. The early international total for Peter Rabbit stands at $17.8 M, which places the film’s current global total at $101.9 M. Peter Rabbit
will open throughout much of the international market during the second half of March. |
In its second weekend of release, Paramount’s Annihilation placed in sixth with an estimated $5.65 M. Annihilation was down a sizable, but understandable 49.0 percent
(with the film’s mixed word of mouth and built-in front-loading both in mind). Annihilation continues to perform in line with its modest expectations with a ten-day haul of $20.64 M. The film is now just $4.80 M away from
reaching the $25.44 M total gross of director Alex Garland’s Ex Machina back in 2015. |
