Updated 4-Day Weekend Estimates: |
Disney’s Black Panther soared to even greater than expected heights on Sunday with an estimated $60.10 M for the day. That represented the second largest Sunday gross of all-time, behind only the
$60.55 M first-Sunday gross of 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Black Panther grossed an estimated $201.80 M over the 3-day weekend, which represents the fifth largest opening weekend gross of all-time. With
Sunday’s stronger than expected performance, the updated four-day weekend estimate for Black Panther stands at a simply massive $235.00 M. |
Monday's updated 3-day and 4-day studio estimates are listed below. |

4-Day Weekend Estimates Update: |
Disney’s Black Panther was off to a historic launch this weekend with respective three-day and four-day estimated weekend grosses of $192.02 M and $218.20 M. The three-day debut for
Black Panther represented the fifth largest opening weekend gross of all-time. Black Panther also set a new opening record for the month of February, as the film surged past the $132.43 M debut of 2016’s
Deadpool by 45.0 percent. Black Panther registered the second largest debut ever for a film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, behind only the $207.44 M debut of 2012’s Marvel’s
The Avengers (and just ahead of the $191.27 M start of 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron). In comparison to other recent films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Black Panther’s three-day launch was
7.2 percent ahead of the $179.14 M start of 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, 31.1 percent above the $146.51 M debut of last year’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and a very impressive 56.4 percent stronger than
the $122.74 M opening of last year’s Thor: Ragnarok. |
The break-out success of Black Panther represents a number of factors all coming together to create a perfect storm, including the long-awaited anticipation for a Black Panther film to begin with, the overall
current popularity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the film’s well-known ensemble cast, the popularity of director Ryan Coogler after 2013’s Fruitvale Station and 2015’s Creed, terrific trailers and overall marketing, the
exceptionally strong reaction to the film by both critics and initial moviegoers, the historical importance of the film and the film becoming a cultural event that appealed to moviegoers across all races, genders and ages. The
reported audience breakdown for Black Panther was 55 percent male, 45 percent female, 38 percent 25 years and younger and 61 percent over the age of 25. |
Black Panther began its run with $75.81 M on Friday (which included an estimated $25.20 M from Thursday evening shows that began at 7 PM), decreased just 13.1 percent on Saturday to take in $65.89 M, is
estimated to decline 23.6 percent on Sunday to gross $50.32 M and estimated to slow 48.0 percent on Monday to register $26.18 M. Long term prospects look especially strong for Black Panther, thanks in part to the previously
mentioned strong critical reviews and strong initial word of mouth for the film, which received a perfect A+ rating on CinemaScore. The break-out success of Black Panther is also another strong early sign for Disney and
Marvel’s highly anticipated Avengers: Infinity War, which debuts in theatres on May 4th. |
Black Panther was also very strong internationally with an estimated international launch of $169.0 M through Sunday. That places the film’s global haul through Sunday at $361.0 M. International debuts
for Black Panther included $25.3 M in South Korea, $24.8 M in the U.K., $9.6 M in Mexico, $9.4 M in Brazil, $9.2 M in Australia, $7.7 M in France, $6.5 M in Indonesia, $6.2 M in Germany and $5.6 M in Taiwan. |
In other box office news, Sony’s Peter Rabbit placed in a distant second with respective three-day and four-day estimated grosses of $17.25 M and $22.13 M. Peter Rabbit held up very nicely in its
second weekend, as the film’s three-day gross was down 31.0 percent from last weekend and the film’s four-day gross was down only 11.5 percent from last weekend’s three-day take. The eleven-day haul for Peter Rabbit stands at
a stronger than expected $53.10 M. That places the film a heathy 31.2 percent ahead of the $40.46 M eleven-day start of 2015’s Paddington. Peter Rabbit is highly likely to continue to hold up well going forward, thanks
in part to good word of mouth and competition aimed directly at family audiences looking relatively soft over the next few weeks. |
Universal’s Fifty Shades Freed followed closely behind in third place with respective three-day and four-day estimated grosses of $16.94 M and $18.88 M. Fifth Shades Freed was down a sharp, but
understandable 56.1 percent over the three-day frame, while the film’s four-day gross was down 51.0 percent from last weekend’s debut. In comparison, last year’s Fifty Shades Darker experienced a very similar 51.3 percent
decline during its second weekend four-day frame to take in $22.68 M. Fifty Shades Freed has grossed $78.07 M in its first eleven days. That is on the high end of expectations and places the film a very reasonable 14.6 percent
behind the $91.380 M eleven-day take of Fifty Shades Darker. |
Fifty Shades Freed remained especially strong internationally this weekend with an estimated $47.7 M for the frame. That brings the film’s international total to $190.8 M through Sunday and the film’s
global total through Sunday to $266.9 M. International totals to date include $22.21 M in Germany, $19.73 M in the U.K., $14.58 M in France, $14.10 M in Italy, $12.50 M in Brazil, $11.71 M in Russia, $10.48 M in Spain and $8.45 M in
Australia. |
Sony’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle claimed fourth place respective three-day and four-day estimated takes of $7.95 M and $10.00 M. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was down 20.7 percent over the
3-day frame and down a very slim 0.2 percent over the 4-day frame, as the film continued to display terrific holding power this weekend, especially given the new direct competition from Black Panther. Through Monday,
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has grossed an exceptional $379.68 M in 62 days. This weekend also saw Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle pass the $900 M global mark. The film has grossed $527.0 M internationally through
Sunday, after taking in an estimated $4.8 M internationally this weekend. |
Warner’s The 15:17 to Paris placed in fifth for the three-day frame with an estimated $7.69 M. The 15:17 to Paris declined 38.8 percent from last weekend’s debut, which represented a very solid
second weekend hold, especially given the film’s poor critical reviews and the added presence of Black Panther in the marketplace this weekend. The ten-day haul for The 15:17 to Paris stands at $25.43 M. That is right
in line with expectations and places the film 14.7 percent behind the recent $29.81 M ten-day launch of fellow Warner Bros. release 12 Strong. BoxOfficeReport is currently estimating an unofficial four-day weekend gross of
$9.10 M for The 15:17 to Paris. |
Fox’s The Greatest Showman claimed sixth place this weekend with respective estimated three-day and four-day grosses of $5.10 M and $6.30 M. In the process, The Greatest Showman passed the
$150 M domestic mark this weekend. The 62-day total through Monday for the surprise hit stands at $155.68 M. The Greatest Showman was down 20.8 percent over the three-day frame and down only 2.2 percent over the four-day
frame. Internationally, The Greatest Showman grossed an estimated $9.64 M this weekend. The Greatest Showman has now grossed $185.6 M to date internationally and $340.1 M to date globally. |
Meanwhile, new wide releases Lionsgate’s Early Man and Pure Flix’s Samson both opened below their already low expectations. Early Man took in $3.15 M over the three-day frame and $4.18 M
over the four-day frame, while Samson was only able to register $1.97 M over the three-day weekend and $2.30 M over the four-day weekend. The already uphill journeys for both films, were no doubt made even tougher this weekend
by the break-out performance of Black Panther. |
