weekend. |
Universal’s Insidious: The Last Key came in slightly above its weekend estimate with a stronger than expected second place start of $29.581 M. |
Other weekend actuals for the frame include: Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($23.729 M), The Greatest Showman ($13.771 M / down only 11.3 percent), Pitch Perfect 3 ($10.298 M),
Ferdinand ($7.698 M), Molly’s Game ($6.857 M), Darkest Hour ($6.050 M), Coco ($5.383 M), All the Money in the World ($3.571 M) and The Shape of Water ($3.139 M). |
On the platform front, NEON’s I, Tonya took in $2.446 M from 256 locations, Fox’s The Post (in advance of its expansion into wide release on Friday) grossed $1.698 M from just 36 locations, A24’s Lady Bird registered $1.572 M from 562 locations and
Focus’ Phantom Thread took in $240 K from 6 locations in NY/LA/Tor. |

Sony’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle continued to impress in a big way this weekend with an estimated first place take of $36.00 M. That represented a decline of just 28.1 percent from last weekend’s
three-day frame, as the film continues to be aided by strong word of mouth. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle registered the 16th largest third weekend gross of all-time. The 19-day total for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
stands at a stronger than expected $244.37 M. That already makes Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle the ninth highest grossing release of 2017 to date. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is running a terrific 13.9 percent
ahead of the $214.51 M 19-day take of 2016’s Sing and will continue to see that percentage gap increase thanks to stronger holding power. |
Internationally, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle grossed an estimated $70.0 M this weekend from 86 territories. With an international total for $275.0 M; Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle passed
the $500 M global mark this weekend and has grossed $519.4 M to date globally. International debuts for the film this week included $7.1 M in Brail, $6.8 M in Italy (over 7 days) and $6.8 M in South Korea (over 5 days). International
totals to date include $35.7 M in the U.K., $19.2 M in Russia, $18.8 M in France, $14.8 M in Germany, $14.7 M in Mexico and $12.9 M in Malaysia. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle will open in China on January 12. |
Universal’s Insidious: The Last Key was off to a strong second place start with an estimated $29.27 M. Horror films have a history of exceeding expectations in January and that was certainly the case for
Insidious: The Last Key this weekend as pre-release expectations for the film had tended to range from $16 M - $22 M. The film registered the 16th largest debut ever for the month of January. Insidious: The Last Key
opened an impressive 29.0 percent ahead of the $22.69 M start of 2015’s Insidious: Chapter 3. Insidious: The Last Key represents another healthy performer from Blumhouse, especially given the film’s low $10 M production
budget. |
Insidious: The Last Key started out with $12.73 M on Friday (which included an estimated $1.98 M from Thursday night shows that began at 7PM), decreased a respectable 13.4 percent on Saturday to take
in $11.03 M and is estimated to decline 50.0 percent on Sunday to gross $5.51 M. While critical reviews for Insidious: The Last Key have been soft, the film looks to be going over much better with audiences, as it received a
B- rating on CinemaScore (which is very solid for a horror film). |
Internationally (where the film is being released by Sony), Insidious: The Last Key was also strong with an estimated $20.1 M from 33 markets this weekend. The film’s international performance this
weekend represented the strongest debut ever for the Insidious franchise in the same 33 markets. Debuts for Insidious: The Last Key this weekend included $4.1 M in Mexico, $2.2 M in France and $2.0 M in Germany.
Insidious: The Last Key will open in the U.K. on January 12, in Russia, Brazil and Italy on January 18, in South Korea on January 31 and in Australia on February 8. |
After leading the weekend box office for the past three frames, Disney’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi fell to third place this weekend with an estimated $23.55 M. Star Wars: The Last Jedi was
down 55.2 percent from last weekend, which represented one of the weekend’s sharper percentage declines among wide releases (though that had been expected heading into the weekend). Even with the large percentage decline,
Star Wars: The Last Jedi was still able to claim the 16th largest fourth weekend gross of all-time. Star Wars: The Last Jedi remains the sixth highest grossing film of all-time domestically with a massive 24-day take of
$572.41 M. That places the film 19.9 percent ahead of the $477.36 M 24-day haul of 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. |
Star Wars: The Last Jedi grossed an estimated $64.7 M internationally this weekend from 55 territories. The film debuted with an estimated $28.7 M in China this weekend. To date,
Star Wars: The Last Jedi has grossed $632.7 M internationally and $1.205 B globally. International totals include $102.9 M in the U.K., $73.5 M in Germany, $57.6 m in France, $52.2 M in Japan, $39.8 M in Australia,

Fox’s The Greatest Showman continued to display tremendous holding power this weekend with an estimated fourth place take of $13.80 M. The Greatest Showman was down a very slim 11.1 percent from
last weekend. After initially opening on the low end of expectations, The Greatest Showman is now exceeding expectations with a 19-day gross of $76.90 M and doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon.
The Greatest Showman already has a current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 8.73 to 1. The film is running just 5.0 percent behind the $80.91 M 19-day take of 2016’s Passengers and is set to overtake
Passengers in the comparison before long. |
Internationally, The Greatest Showman grossed an estimated $24.0 M this weekend from 74 markets. That brings the film’s international total to $74.5 M and global haul to $151.4 M. This weekend saw
The Greatest Showman debut with $3.7 M in Russia and $2.2 M in Germany. International totals for the film so far include $13.5 M in the U.K., $9.2 M in Australia, $8.0 M in South Korea and $7.2 M in Mexico. |
Universal’s Pitch Perfect 3 rounded out the weekend’s top five with an estimated $10.23 M. Pitch Perfect 3 was down a very solid 39.2 percent from last weekend. Pitch Perfect 3 has
grossed $85.98 M in 17 days domestically, which is in line with expectations and leaves the film $14.02 M away from reaching the $100 M domestic mark. Internationally, Pitch Perfect 3 grossed an estimated $18.1 M this
weekend from 42 territories, which included an estimated $8.4 M debut in Australia. To date, Pitch Perfect 3 has grossed $55.0 M internationally and $141.0 M globally. |
Computer animated holdovers Ferdinand and Coco claimed sixth and ninth place with respective weekend estimates of $7.73 M and $5.54 M. Both films held up nicely this weekend, as Fox’s
Ferdinand was down 32.1 percent and Disney’s Coco slowed by just 25.8 percent. Respective domestic totals stand at an impressive $192.08 M for Coco in 47 days and at a respectable $70.50 M for
Ferdinand in 24 days. Internationally, Ferdinand grossed an estimated $23.3 M this weekend, while Coco took in an estimated $19.9 M. To date, Coco has grossed $397.0 M internationally
and $589.1 M globally. Ferdinand has grossed $112.8 M internationally and $183.3 M globally. |
This weekend also saw STXfilms’ Molly’s Game and Focus’ Darkest Hour expand into wide release with similar results. Molly’s Game claimed seventh place this weekend with an
estimated $7.00 M from 1,608 locations, while Darkest Hour followed in eighth with an estimated $6.36 M from 1,733 locations. Molly’s Game performed on the high end of expectations this weekend, while
Darkest Hour came in a bit higher than its expectations for the weekend. Respective total grosses stand at $28.39 M for Darkest Hour in 47 days and at $14.22 M for Molly’s Game in 14 days. |
