Weekend Actuals Update: |
With actuals now in, Disney’s Thor: Ragnarok finished just above Sunday’s studio estimate with a first place take of $57.078 M. That brings the film’s ten-day total to a mighty $57.078 M. |
Paramount’s Daddy’s Home 2 came in slightly below yesterday’s estimate, but still held onto second place with a debut of $29.651 M, while Fox’s Murder on the Orient Express finished just ahead of its studio
estimate with a third place launch of $28.861 M. |
Other weekend actuals for the frame include: A Bad Moms Christmas ($11.469 M), Jigsaw ($3.424 M), Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween ($2.001 M), Geostorm ($1.642 M),
Blade Runner 2049 ($1.460 M) and Happy Death Day ($1.266 M). |
On the platform front, A24’s Lady Bird continued to impress with $1.120 M from 37 locations, while Fox Searchlight’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri was off to a strong
$322 K launch from 4 locations in New York and Los Angeles. |
Weekend Estimates Update: |
Disney’s Thor: Ragnarok took in an estimated $56.60 M this weekend to lead the weekend box office for a second consecutive frame. Thor: Ragnarok was down 53.9 percent from last
weekend, which represents a very solid second weekend hold for a high-profile comic book adaptation. In addition to being aided by strong critical reviews and strong word of mouth, Thor: Ragnarok
(and the marketplace in general) received an added boost this weekend from Veterans Day falling on Saturday. Thor: Ragnarok also likely received an additional boost from moviegoers who wanted to catch the film before
Warner’s highly anticipated Justice League enters the marketplace this coming Friday. In comparison, 2013’s Thor: The Dark World declined 57.3 percent in its second weekend to gross $36.59 M. With a mighty
ten-day total of $211.59 M, Thor: Ragnarok is running 45.8 percent ahead of the $145.10 M ten-day take of Thor: The Dark World and has already surpassed the $206.36 M final domestic gross of
Thor: The Dark World. Thor: Ragnarok registered the fifth largest second weekend gross of 2017 to date. |
Internationally, Thor: Ragnarok grossed an estimated $75.9 M this weekend from 56 markets. That brings the film’s international total to $438.5 M and current global haul to $650.1 M. Key
international total grosses for Thor: Ragnarok to date include $95.2 M in China, $34.1 M in the U.K., $31.0 M in Korea, $24.4 M in Brazil, $20.4 M in Australia, $17.7 M in France, $16.9 M in Mexico and $16.5 M in Russia. |
In a tight race for second place between Paramount’s Daddy’s Home 2 and Fox’s Murder on the Orient Express, Daddy’s Home 2 emerged victorious with an estimated debut of $30.00 M.
Heading into the weekend, it had been expected to be close between Daddy’s Home 2 and Murder on the Orient Express, with most giving the slight edge to Murder on the Orient Express. Like its
predecessor, 2015’s Daddy’s Home, Daddy’s Home 2 exceeded expectations this weekend. The film opened a very respectable 22.6 percent below the $38.74 M break-out start of Daddy’s Home.
Daddy’s Home 2 appears to have received an added boost this weekend from the lack of family options in the marketplace as of late. |
Daddy’s Home 2 started out with $10.90 M on Friday (which included an estimated $1.50 M from Thursday night shows that began at 5 PM), increased 6.4 percent on Saturday to gross $11.60 M and is
estimated to decrease 35.3 percent on Sunday to take in $7.50 M. Daddy’s Home 2 proved to be critic-proof this weekend as the film hasn't gone over well with critics. The film has a current rating of just 4.499 on our
LoveHate Rate aggregate measurement of critical and online user ratings. However, Daddy’s Home 2 looks to be going over far better with
audiences, as the film received a healthy A- rating on CinemaScore (which was a notch above the B+ rating received by Daddy’s Home). With the aid of good word of mouth and the holiday season, Daddy’s Home 2 is
likely to display strong holding power going forward. |
Murder on the Orient Express debuted in third place with an estimated $28.20 M. Like Daddy’s Home 2, Murder on the Orient Express also exceeded pre-release expectations this weekend. While
critical reviews for the film have been mixed, Murder on the Orient Express benefited from having a built-in audience from both the well-known Agatha Christie novel and the 1974 theatrical version and from having a strong
ensemble cast that includes Kenneth Branagh, Johnny Depp, Daisy Ridley and Michelle Pfeiffer. Murder on the Orient Express opened 14.9 percent ahead of the $24.54 M launch of last year’s The Girl on the Train. |
Murder on the Orient Express began with $10.75 M on Friday (which included an estimated $1.60 M from Thursday night shows that began at 7 PM), increased a very slim 0.7 percent on Saturday to take in
$10.83 M and is estimated to slow 38.8 percent on Sunday to gross $6.63 M. As mentioned, critical reviews for Murder on the Orient Express have been mixed. The film has a current
LoveHate Rate of 6.185. Murder on the Orient Express received a respectable B rating on CinemaScore. |
STXfilms’ A Bad Moms Christmas claimed fourth place with an estimated $11.51 M. A Bad Moms Christmas held up very nicely this weekend as the film was down just 31.3 percent.
A Bad Moms Christmas is clearly going over much better with audiences than it has with critics and holiday themed films in general tend to hold up well throughout the holiday season. A Bad Moms Christmas has grossed a
very solid $39.87 M through twelve days of release. That places the film 28.1 percent behind the $55.46 M twelve-day take of last year’s Bad Moms (which opened on a Friday and had the added advantage of stronger midweek summer grosses).
Look for A Bad Moms Christmas to continue to hold up well going forward. |
Lionsgate’s Jigsaw and Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween took fifth and sixth place with respective estimated grosses of $3.42 M and $2.07 M. Jigsaw was down a very respectable
47.9 percent from last weekend, while Boo 2! A Madea Halloween declined a sizable 54.4 percent. Respective total grosses stand at $45.92 M for Boo 2! A Madea Halloween in 24 days and at $34.35 M for
Jigsaw through 17 days. |
On the platform front, A24’s Lady Bird continued to impress with an estimated $1.25 M from just 37 locations. That gave the critically acclaimed Greta Gerwig directed film starring Saoirse Ronan a very
strong per-location average of $33,766. Lady Bird has grossed a very promising $1.78 M through ten days of platform release. Lady Bird has benefited from terrific critical reviews. The film currently has the highest
LoveHate Rate of 2017 to date with a score of 9.428. That also represents one of the highest scores of the decade. Given its tremendous buzz and
platform start, Lady Bird appears set for a very healthy box office run as the film continues to expand into additional locations going forward. |
Fox Searchlight’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri also performed very well in platform release this weekend with an estimated launch of $320,000 from 4 locations in New York in Los Angeles. That
gave the critically acclaimed Martin McDonagh directed film starring Frances McDormand a very impressive per-location average of $80,000 for the frame. |
In international news, Disney’s Coco continued to impress in Mexico with an estimated $8.4 M in its third weekend. That represented a decline of just 23 percent from last weekend. The 17-day Mexico
total for Coco stands at a massive $41.4 M. Coco will debut domestically and in a number of international markets on November 22 and it will be interesting to see if the film’s terrific reception in Mexico helps to
boost the film’s upcoming launch domestically and throughout the rest of the world. |
