Weekend Box Office Report
November 3 - November 5, 2017

By Daniel Garris

Weekend Actuals Update:

With actuals now in, Disney’s Thor: Ragnarok exceeded Sunday’s studio estimate with a massive first place debut of $122.745 M. That represented the sixth largest opening weekend ever for the month of November and the 29th largest opening weekend of all-time.

STXfilms’ A Bad Moms Christmas came in slightly below its estimate with a second place start of $16.759 M. The five-day total for A Bad Moms Christmas stands at $21.285 M.

Other weekend actuals for the frame include: Jigsaw ($6.558 M), Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween ($4.541 M), Geostorm ($3.194 M), Happy Death Day ($2.700 M), Blade Runner 2049 ($2.321 M), Thank You for Your Service ($2.208 M), Only the Brave ($1.920 M), Let There Be Light ($1.697 M) and The Foreigner ($1.596 M).

On the platform front, A24’s Lady Bird launched with $364,437 from 4 locations in New York and Los Angeles. That gave the film a very impressive per-location average of $91,109 for the frame.

Weekend Estimates Update:

Disney’s Thor: Ragnarok was off to a thunderous start this weekend with an estimated first place take of $121.01 M. Thor: Ragnarok exceeded its already lofty expectations, which had tended to range from $100 M to $120 M heading into the weekend. The decision to team up Thor with The Hulk in Thor: Ragnarok paid off in a big way, as Thor: Ragnarok opened an impressive 41.1 percent stronger than the $85.74 M launch of 2013’s Thor: The Dark World. Thor: Ragnarok delivered the fourth largest debut of 2017 so far, the seventh largest opening ever in the month of November and the seventh largest debut for a film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thor: Ragnarok also easily registered the largest opening ever over the weekend after Halloween weekend (the traditional start of the holiday box office season), as it opened 42.3 percent stronger than the $85.06 M launch of previous record-holder Doctor Stranger last year.

Thor: Ragnarok started with $46.82 M on Friday (which included an estimated $14.50 M from Thursday night shows that began at 7PM), decreased just 5.3 percent on Saturday to gross $44.36 M and is estimated to decline 32.8 percent on Sunday to take in $121.01 M. Thor: Ragnarok benefited from strong critical reviews this weekend. The film currently has a rating of 8.650 on our LoveHate Rate aggregate measurement of critical and online user ratings, which represents the eighth highest rating among 2017 releases to date. Thor: Ragnarok also looks to be going over very well with audiences. In addition to the film’s strong Saturday hold, Thor: Ragnarok received a strong A rating on CinemaScore. Thor: Ragnarok grossed an estimated $12.2 M from IMAX screens this weekend, which represented 10.1 percent of the film’s overall opening weekend gross.

Intentionally, Thor: Ragnarok grossed an estimated $151.4 M this weekend from 55 markets. That brings the film’s international total to $306.0 M and early global haul to $427.0 M. Key international debuts this weekend included $55.6 M in China, $10.8 M in Mexico, $8.9 M in Germany and $5.2 M in India. Key totals in markets that opened last week include $27.2 M in the U.K., $25.8 M in Korea, $19.3 M in Brazil, $15.5 M in Australia and $14.9 M in France.

STXfilms’ A Bad Moms Christmas placed in second this weekend with an estimated debut of $17.03 M. After a modest two-day start of $4.53 M on Wednesday and Thursday, A Bad Moms Christmas rebounded nicely over the weekend to perform in line with expectations for the three-day weekend. The five-day start for A Bad Moms Christmas stands at $21.56 M. A Bad Moms Christmas is running 29.6 percent behind the $30.61 M five-day haul of last year’s Bad Moms (which opened on a Friday and had a three-day opening of $23.82 M).

A Bad Moms Christmas grossed $5.51 M on Friday (which represented a strong 174.2 percent jump over Thursday), increased a promising 25.6 percent on Saturday to register $6.92 M and is estimated to decrease 33.5 percent on Sunday to take in $4.60 M. A Bad Moms Christmas has received a mostly negative reaction from critics and online users. The film has a current LoveHate Rate of just 4.809. However, the film looks to be going over better with audiences, as it received a respectable B rating on CinemaScore (though it should be noted that Bad Moms received a significantly stronger A rating on CinemaScore). A Bad Moms Christmas will hope to be critic-proof going forward, especially with aid from the holiday season (holiday themed films in general tend to be back-loaded at the box office).

Lionsgate’s Jigsaw claimed third place with an estimated $6.70 M. While Jigsaw declined a sharp 59.7 percent from last weekend, that also represented the smallest second weekend percentage decline for the historically front-loaded franchise since Saw III decreased 55.9 percent back in 2006. Jigsaw has grossed a solid $28.84 M in ten days. That places the film 28.0 percent ahead of the $22.53 M ten-day take of 2009’s Saw VI (which fell 62.7 percent in its second weekend to gross $5.27 M) and 24.8 percent behind the $38.33 M ten-day haul of 2010’s Saw 3D (which slid 65.7 percent in its second frame to claim $7.73 M). With the aid of good word of mouth, Jigsaw will hope to continue to hold up relatively well for a Saw film going forward.

Fellow Lionsgate release Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween took fourth with an estimated $4.65 M. That represented a sizable, but understandable 53.7 percent decline from last weekend. The 17-day total for Boo 2! A Madea Halloween stands at $42.96 M. That is in line with expectations and places the film 33.8 percent behind the $64.92 M 17-day take of last year’s Boo! A Madea Halloween (which slowed 55.1 percent in its third frame to gross $7.73 M).

Meanwhile, Warner’s Geostorm and Universal’s Happy Death Day claimed fifth and sixth place with estimated grosses of $3.04 M and $2.82 M. Geostorm was down 48.6 percent from last weekend, while Happy Death Day was down a very respectable 44.6 percent. Respective total grosses stand at a lackluster $28.77 M for Geostorm in 17 days and at a stronger than expected $52.97 M for Happy Death Day in 24 days.

On the platform front, A24’s Lady Bird was off to an outstanding launch with an estimated $376 K from 4 locations in New York and Los Angeles. That gave the critically acclaimed Greta Gerwig directed film starring Saoirse Ronan a terrific per-location average of $93,903 for the frame. Lady Bird will expand into additional cities this coming Friday.

In international news, Disney’s Coco continued to impress in Mexico with an estimated $10.4 M. That represented a 12 percent increase over last weekend’s debut and brings the film’s ten-day Mexico total to $27.6 M. Coco will debut domestically and in a number of international markets on November 22.
