Weekend Box Office Report
October 20 - October 22, 2017

By Daniel Garris

Weekend Actuals Update:

With actuals now in, Lionsgate’s Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween came in slightly below yesterday’s studio estimate with a first place debut of $21.227 M. Meanwhile, Warner’s Geostorm came in a bit above its studio estimate with a second place start of $13.707 M.

Other weekend actuals for the frame include: Happy Death Day ($9.363 M), Blade Runner 2049 ($7.353 M), Only the Brave ($6.003 M), The Foreigner ($5.787 M), IT ($3.452 M), The Snowman ($3.373 M), American Made ($3.132 M), Kingsman: The Golden Circle ($3.011 M), The Mountain Between Us ($2.774 M) and Same Kind of Different As Me ($2.592 M).

On the platform front, A24’s The Killing of a Sacred Deer started out with $115,120 from 4 locations, Roadside and Amazon’s Wonderstruck opened with $65,882 from 4 locations and National Geographic and Abramorama’s Jane debuted with $58,348 from 3 locations.

Weekend Estimates Update:

Lionsgate’s Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween debuted in first place this weekend with an estimated $21.65 M. Boo 2! A Madea Halloween performed in line with expectations, which had tended to range from $19 M to $25 M heading into the weekend. Boo 2! A Madea Halloween did open 24.0 percent below the $28.50 M launch of last year’s Boo! A Madea Halloween, though Boo 2! wasn’t expected to open as high as its predecessor did. With Boo 2! A Madea Halloween, the Madea franchise remains a very consistent performer, as every Madea film except for 2013’s A Madea Christmas has opened with at least $20 M. Boo 2! A Madea Halloween delivered the tenth largest debut ever for the pre-Halloween weekend frame.

Boo 2! A Madea Halloween started with $7.47 M on Friday (which included an estimated $760 K from Thursday night shows that began at 7 PM), increased a healthy 18.3 percent on Saturday to take in $8.84 M and is estimated to decrease 39.6 percent on Sunday to gross $5.34 M. Boo 2! A Madea Halloween has gone over poorly with critics and has a current rating of just 2.965 on our LoveHate Rate aggregate measurement of critical and online user ratings. However, the film looks to be going over far better with audiences, as it received a healthy A- rating on CinemaScore. Last year Boo! A Madea Halloween held up nicely in its second weekend thanks in part to Halloween weekend and Boo 2! A Madea Halloween will hope to do the same next weekend.

Warner’s Geostorm opened in second with an estimated $13.30 M. While Geostorm opened slightly ahead of scaled back expectations, the film performed poorly domestically this weekend with its pricey production budget in mind. After all of the natural disasters over the past several months, audiences likely weren’t in the mood for a disaster film at this time. Poor critical reviews didn’t help matters either. Geostorm currently has a soft LoveHate Rate of 3.662. Geostorm opened a lackluster 38.5 percent below the $21.64 M debut of last year’s London Has Fallen (which also starred Gerard Butler).

Geostorm launched with $4.32 M on Friday (the film didn’t have Thursday night shows), increased a strong 29.9 percent on Saturday to take in $5.61 M and is estimated to fall 39.9 percent on Sunday to gross $3.37 M. Geostorm received a lukewarm B- rating on CinemaScore, which isn't the greatest sign for the film going forward.

Geostorm is preforming significantly stronger internationally, as the film took in an estimated $36.4 M this weekend from 50 markets. That brings the film’s international total to $49.6 M and current global total to $62.9 M. Debuts in selected markets this weekend for Geostorm included $4.9 M in Russia, $3.8 M in Mexico, $2.0 M in the U.K. and $1.7 M in Brazil.

Universal’s Happy Death Day was down two spots to land in third place with an estimated $9.38 M. Happy Death Day fell a very sharp 64.0 percent from last weekend, as the decision to open the film on Friday the 13th appears to have led to even greater than expected front-loading. In the bigger picture, the low-budget Happy Death Day is still performing well with both its cost and expectations in mind with a ten-day start of $40.68 M. Happy Death Day is running 4.4 percent behind the $42.56 M ten-day take of 2015’s The Visit (which declined 54.5 percent in its second weekend to gross $11.57 M). Happy Death Day will hope to stabilize next weekend with the aid of Halloween weekend.

Warner’s Blade Runner 2049 placed in fourth with an estimated $7.16 M. Blade Runner 2049 was down a sharp 53.8 percent from last weekend. In addition to continued built-in front-loading, Blade Runner 2049 also took a hit this weekend from playing in 855 fewer locations than last weekend and from losing most of its IMAX shows to Geostorm and Only the Brave. Blade Runner 2049 continues to perform significantly below expectations with a 17-day gross of $74.01 M. That places the film an underwhelming 36.5 percent behind the $116.47 M 17-day haul of 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road.

Sony’s Only the Brave rounded out the weekend’s top five with an estimated $6.01 M. Only the Brave opened on the low end of expectations, which had tended to range from $6 M to $10 M. As was the case with Geostorm, opening Only the Brave after the string of natural disasters as of late appears to have limited the potential of Only the Brave. Unlike Geostorm, Only the Brave has gone over very well with critics. Only the Brave has a strong LoveHate Rate of 8.650, which is currently the seventh highest score of 2017 to date among qualifying films. Only the Brave also looks to be going over very well with audiences, as the film received a strong A rating on CinemaScore. Only the Brave will hope to hold up well going forward thanks to its strong critical reviews and strong early word of mouth, though that will be easier said than done given the film’s modest per-location average of $2,332 this weekend.

STXfilms’ The Foreigner placed in sixth with an estimated $5.45 M. The Jackie Chan led action-thriller was down a sharper than anticipated 58.4 percent from last weekend’s debut. Despite solid word of mouth, it appears as though the combined competition from this weekend’s five new wide releases took a toll on The Foreigner this weekend. The Foreigner has grossed $22.84 M in ten days, which places the film 23.2 percent ahead of the $18.54 M ten-day take of 2010’s The Spy Next Door.

Warner’s IT took seventh with an estimated $3.50 M. That represented a solid 42.2 percent decline from last weekend. IT has grossed a massive $320.23 M in 45 days, which currently places the film in 55th place on the all-time unadjusted domestic list. Like Boo 2! A Madea Halloween and Happy Death Day, IT will hope to see a boost next weekend from Halloween weekend.

Meanwhile, Universal’s The Snowman disappointed with an estimated eighth place debut on just $3.44 M. That was significantly below expectations, which had tended to range from $6 M to $10 M heading into the weekend. The modest potential of The Snowman to begin with was further limited by the film’s especially poor critical reviews. The Snowman has a current LoveHate Rate of only 2.836, which is the third lowest score of 2017 to date among qualifying films. The Snowman also went over poorly with CinemaScore audiences, as it received a D rating.

Pure Flix’s Same Kind of Different As Me debuted in twelfth with an estimated $2.56 M. The film opened slightly under expectations, which ranged from $3 M to $4 M. Same Kind of Different As Me was especially front-loaded towards Friday this weekend due to relatively heavy group-sales for Friday. On a positive note, Same Kind of Different As Me received a strong A rating on CinemaScore.

On the platform front, three different films were off to noteworthy starts in New York and Los Angeles. A24’s The Killing of a Sacred Deer took in an estimated $114,585 from 4 locations for a per-location average of $28,646, Roadside and Amazon’s Wonderstruck grossed an estimated $68,762 from 4 locations for a per-location average of $17,191 and National Geographic and Abramorama’s Jane registered an estimated $54,712 from 3 locations for a per-location average of $18,237. All three films will expand into additional locations in the coming weeks.
