The LEGO Ninjago Movie ($4.316 M), My Little Pony: The Movie ($4.112 M), Victoria & Abdul ($3.006 M), Marshall ($3.001 M) and Professor Marston & the Wonder Women ($737 K). |
Weekend Estimates Update: |
Universal’s Happy Death Day debuted in first place this weekend with an estimated $26.50 M. The low-budget PG-13 rated horror film from Blumhouse Productions exceeded expectations, which had
tended to range from $16 M to $21 M heading into the weekend. Happy Death Day represents another strong performer for Universal and Blumhouse in 2017; joining both Get Out and Split from earlier in the
year. Happy Death Day opened 4.2 percent ahead of the $25.43 M launch of 2015’s The Visit (another fairly recent successful low-budget horror film from Universal and Blumhouse). Happy Death Day received
a boost from opening on Friday the 13th and from the relative lack of PG-13 rated fare in the marketplace as of late. The film also looks to have been aided by receiving solid critical reviews. Happy Death Day has a
current rating of 6.687 on our LoveHate Rate aggregate measurement of critical and online user ratings. |
Happy Death Day registered $11.65 M on Friday the 13th (which included an estimated $1.00 M from Thursday night shows that began at 7PM), declined an understandable 19.6 percent on Saturday to
take in $9.37 M and is estimated to slide 41.4 percent on Sunday to gross $5.49 M. Going forward, Happy Death Day will hope to hold up well throughout the rest of October in the lead-up to Halloween.
Happy Death Day received a B rating on CinemaScore, which is very solid for a horror film. |
Warner’s Blade Runner 2049 placed in second with an estimated $15.10 M. On the heels of last weekend’s lackluster start, Blade Runner 2049 was down a sizable 53.9 percent this weekend as
strong critical reviews still don’t appear to be helping the film all that much. The ten-day total for Blade Runner 2049 stands at a significantly softer than expected $60.58 M. Blade Runner 2049 is running
5.5 percent ahead of the $57.44 M ten-day start of Alien: Covenant earlier this year and 31.2 percent behind the $88.08 M ten-day haul of 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. |
STXfilms’ The Foreigner opened in third place with an estimated $12.84 M. The Jackie Chan led action-thriller opened towards the higher end of expectations, which had ranged from $10 M to $14 M.
The Foreigner represented the first Jackie Chan vehicle to receive a wide release since the release of The Spy Next Door back in January of 2010. The Foreigner debuted 32.0 percent ahead of the $9.73 M
three-day start of The Spy Next Door. |
The Foreigner started out with $4.75 M on Friday (which included an estimated $775 K from Thursday night shows that began at 7PM), increased a slim 3.2 percent on Saturday to take in $4.90 M and
is estimated to decrease 34.9 percent on Sunday to take in $3.19 M. The Foreigner has received mixed critical reviews, but is going over better with online uses. The film has a current
LoveHate Rate of 6.830. The Foreigner looks to be going over well with audiences, as the film received a healthy A- rating on CinemaScore. |
Warner’s IT took fourth place with an estimated $6.05 M. IT was down 39.3 percent from last weekend, which represented a very solid hold, especially given the new competition the film
faced from Happy Death Day. Like Happy Death Day, IT also received a boost this weekend from Friday the 13th. IT has grossed a massive $314.93 M in 38 days, which currently ranks the film in 60th
place on the all-time domestic list. IT grossed $10.4 M internationally this weekend, which brings the film’s international total to $315.7 M and worldwide haul to $630.6 M. |
It was a fairly close race for places fifth through seventh this weekend between Fox’s The Mountain Between Us, Universal’s American Made and Fox’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle.
The Mountain Between Us currently has the edge for fifth place with an estimated $5.65 M, American Made took sixth place with an estimated $5.42 M and Kingsman: The Golden Circle claimed seventh with an
estimated $5.32 M. The Mountain Between Us was down 46.5 percent from last weekend, American Made declined just 35.8 percent, while Kingsman: The Golden Circle slowed by 38.7 percent. Respective total
grosses stand at $89.65 M for Kingsman: The Golden Circle in 24 days, at $40.15 M for American Made in 17 days and at $20.50 M for The Mountain Between Us in ten days. |
Animated films The LEGO Ninjago Movie and My Little Pony: The Movie claimed eighth and ninth place with respective estimated grosses of $4.32 M and $4.00 M. Warner’s
The LEGO Ninjago Movie declined 38.4 percent from last weekend, while Lionsgate's My Little Pony: The Movie was down a sharp 55.0 percent. Respective total grosses stand at $51.58 M in 24 days for
The LEGO Ninjago Movie and at $15.51 M in ten days for My Little Pony: The Movie. |
Meanwhile, Open Road’s Marshall debuted in eleventh place with an estimated $3.04 M. Marshall registered a respectable per-location average of $3,702 from a moderate 821 locations. The
film opened on the low end of expectations, which ranged from $3 M to $5 M for the frame. Marshall has received strong critical reviews and has a current LoveHate Rate of 7.768. |
