Weekend Actuals Update: |
With actuals now in, Warner’s IT came in just ahead of yesterday’s studio estimate with a massive second weekend take of $60.103 M. |
Lionsgate and CBS Films’ American Assassin and Paramount’s mother! also both came in slightly above their studio estimates with respective debuts of $14.847 M and $7.535 M. |
Other weekend actuals for the frame include: Home Again ($5.183 M), The Hitman’s Bodyguard ($3.589 M), Wind River ($2.572 M), Annabelle: Creation ($2.411 M) and Leap! ($2.164 M). |
Weekend Estimates Update: |
Warner’s IT continued to lead the box office with ease this weekend with an estimated $60.00 M. IT declined 51.4 percent from last weekend’s debut, which represented a very healthy
second weekend hold for a horror film (especially a horror film of this size). This weekend’s performance for IT represented the second largest September weekend gross on record, behind only the film’s
record-breaking debut last weekend. IT also registered the largest second weekend gross ever for a horror film, the second largest second weekend gross ever for an R-rated film
(behind only American Sniper back in 2016) and the 21st largest second weekend gross of all-time. |
IT zoomed past the $200 M domestic mark this weekend and has grossed a massive $218.71 M through ten days of release. IT is running an astonishing 160.5 percent ahead of the
$83.95 M ten-day launch of 2013’s The Conjuring, as IT continues to journey into uncharted waters for a horror film. The performance of IT thus far has been much more in line with that of an event
comic book adaptation, as the film is currently running just 7.7 percent behind the $236.87 M ten-day start of last year’s Deadpool. IT should continue to hold up well going forward, especially with the aid
of strong word of mouth and the approaching pre-Halloween season. |
Internationally, IT grossed an estimated $60.3 M this weekend from 56 markets. That brings the film’s international total to $152.6 M and global haul to $371.3 M. This weekend IT
debuted with an especially strong $13.8 M in Mexico. Key international grosses to date for IT include $27.7 M in the United Kingdom, $13.8 M in Russia, $11.8 M in Australia and $10.9 M in Brazil. |
Lionsgate and CBS Films’ American Assassin debuted in second place with an estimated $14.80 M. American Assassin opened in line with expectations, which had tended to range from
$10 M to $16 M heading into the weekend. It was especially important for American Assassin to get off to a solid start this weekend with Fox’s anticipated Kingsman: The Golden Circle entering the
marketplace this coming Friday. The opening weekend performance of American Assassin was very similar to the $14.42 M start of 2014’s John Wick and was 27.5 percent ahead of the $11.61 M three-day debut of
Patriots Day back in January. |
American Assassin started with $5.77 M on Friday (which included an estimated $915 K from Thursday night shows that began at 7 PM), declined 5.3 percent on Saturday to take in $5.47 M and is
estimated to decrease 34.8 percent on Sunday to gross $3.57 M. Critical reaction to American Assassin has been lackluster, though the film has gone over better with online users. The film has a current
LoveHate Rate of 5.715. American Assassin received a solid B+ rating on CinemaScore. As mentioned, American Assassin
will face new direct competition from Kingsman: The Golden Circle this coming weekend. |
Paramount’s mother! was off to a softer start with an estimated third place take of $7.50 M. That was below expectations, which had tended to range from $9 M to $15 M heading into the
weekend. mother! opened an underwhelming 39.0 percent below the $12.29 M start of 2012’s House at the End of the Street. While mother! has received solid critical reviews
(the film has a current rating of 6.474 on our LoveHate Rate aggregate measurement of critical and online user ratings), the film looks to
be going over especially poorly with audiences as it received an F rating on CinemaScore. In addition to having its potential limited by its poor initial word of mouth, mother! also faced an uphill battle to begin
with in entering the marketplace only one week after the debut of IT. |
On Friday, mother! started out with $3.10 M (which included an estimated $700 K from Thursday night shows that began at 7 PM), before declining a concerning 11.3 percent on Saturday to take
in $2.75 M. The film is estimated to fall 40.0 percent on Sunday to gross $1.65 M. Given its poor reaction with audiences, mother! is extremely likely to fade away from theatres quickly. |
Open Road’s Home Again claimed fourth place with an estimated $5.33 M. Home Again held up nicely this weekend, as the film was down 37.7 percent from last weekend’s debut. It should
be noted that holdovers in general held up very well this weekend, thanks in part to last weekend’s grosses being deflated by the combination of Hurricane Irma, the debut of IT and the first Sunday of the NFL
season. Home Again is also being aided by having gone over better with audiences than it has with critics. The ten-day total for Home Again stands at $17.14 M, which is in line with the film’s modest
expectations. Home Again is running 26.9 percent behind the $23.45 M ten-day haul of 2015’s Hot Pursuit. |
Lionsgate’s The Hitmans’s Bodyguard rounded out the weekend’s top five with an estimated $3.55 M. The Hitman’s Bodyguard was down just 26.1 percent from last weekend.
The Hitman’s Bodyguard passed the $70 M domestic mark this weekend and has grossed a stronger than expected $70.36 M in 31 days. That places The Hitman’s Bodyguard just ahead of the $69.96 M 31-day take of
2014’s Let’s Be Cops. |
Warner’s Annabelle: Creation and The Weinstein Company’s Wind River placed in sixth and seventh with respective weekend estimates of $2.60 M and $2.55 M.
Annabelle: Creation declined a very solid 35.1 percent from last weekend, while Wind River was down only 18.5 percent. Respective total grosses stand at $99.90 M in 38 days for
Annabelle: Creation and at $29.12 M in 45 days for Wind River. |
